UNIT 10: LOCAL ADMINISTRATION

HUMAN HABITATS: is a place where people live.


They have our basic needs: food, water and shelter
-is essential to human life
-Its usually collected in rural areas
-WELLS are used to take water out of the ground
WATER
-RESERVOIRS are artificial or natural lakes that store water
This water is filtered before it is distributed through pipes to villages, towns and
cities
-are built to protect the human being from heat, cold, wind and rain
SHELTERS
-The houses are adapted to the environmental conditions
-is produced in rural areas, then is processed and transported to cities
HOW IS FOOD PRODUCED?
1- Farmers grow vegetables and cereals and also breed animals
FOOD
2- Farmers collect them
3- Food is selected, cleaned and processed. Then, the food is packed
4- The processed food is transported to shops and supermarkets
5- We buy food in shops and supermarkets
LANDSCAPE is all the natural and human elements we can see in one place
RURAL LANDSCAPE: VILLAGE
BUILDINGS
FARMS
-Not very tall
-They are near the villages
-There are not many of them -Food is produced on these
-There are no hospitals,
farms
universities or big shopping
-There are forests in villages

URBAN LANDSCAPE:
BUILDINGS
-People live in blocks of flats
-people work in tall buildings
-there are many schools, hospitals, cinemas,
theatres, restaurants, shopping centres and
parks

STREETS
-They are narrow
-There isnt much traffic
-There are street lamps,
traffic signs, fountains and
benches

TOWNS AND CITIES


STREETS
-They are wide
-There are one-way and two-ways streets
-There are more traffic than in villages
-There are streetlights, traffic lights, traffic
signs, bus stops and taxi stands

LOCAL ADMINISTRATION
THE TOWN HALL is a place where local government officials work
The local government is the Mayor and the councilors
The councillors represent the citizens and make decisions about the community
-

Every four years, people over 18 vote in LOCAL ELECTIONS to choose the councillors. The
elected councillors vote to choose the Mayor

THE MAYOR has different functions:


-he is in charge of the municipal policy
-he is in charge of the government
-he is in charge of the administration of the city, town or village

THE COUNCILLORS have different functions:


-they choose the mayor
-they control the public service department
(public jobs: doctor, nurse, teacher, police officer, firefighter, gardener, street cleaner)
-they pass laws
PUBLIC JOBS:
TEACHERS:
Teachers work in schools, they teach children to read, write and think

FIREFIGHTERS:
Firefighters extinguish fires with organisation and in group to be safe

DOCTORS AND NURSES:


Doctors examine patients and give them medicines
Nurses take care or sick and injured people

STREET CLEANERS:
They sweep streets and remove rubbish from the streets or grass

GARDENERS:
They take care of flowers and tress

POLICE OFFICERS:
They protect people and property
