Parent teacher Partnerships: A theoretical Approach for Teachers

Carol R. Keyes

Application: Something that I had noticed that was an area of conflict that cannot
be simply avoided like the article suggests is the difference in culture between
parents and teaching staff. During the Teaching Program at ASU, were taught how
to teach so that it would be relevant to students across all cultures. I feel like what
we learned for CRT can be applied to parent meetings.
Reaction: Culture is important. For multiple reasons especially if you are to
approach any problem or situation with empathy and understanding. You need to
know where the concerns are coming from. I feel like teachers will need to be
incredibly sensitive and flexible.
Application: Note to self: Try to be flexible with beliefs when talking to parents.
Suspend judgment. If parents harbor problematic beliefs or views its not your place
to try to change their minds in the meetings. You are there to discuss the student.
Realization: Both the teacher and the parent has a motivating factor for them to
not communicate. Everyone has busy lives. Parents will be experience job stress,
and teachers will as well. These factors make the extra act of reaching out and
communicating a tedious experience.
Connection: Teachers and Parents are essentially the same when it comes to the
students. They both want the best for that kid. At least this should ideally be the
case. Use this to your advantage Mr. B!
