SERBIAN CHURCH PARISHES IN THE MIDDLE AGE
Parish is the smallest entity of church organization. Rare are the data which
indicate the organization of parishes and their size in Serbian medieval sources. Basic
elements determining this church entity are: a temple, a priest or population. The parish is
most often defined as an are of priests activity. However, the conclusion of the existence of
the parish cannot directly be drawn only by mentioning priests in the medieval sources.
Rural community was not divided so that each priest would be assigned a parish. Not all the
priests mentioned in the Serbian medieval sources were parish priests, but could have other
responsibilities. The existence of the church in a certain area was the main criterion for the
determination of a parish in the medieval Serbia. Deani chrysobulls indicate that parishes
were neither of the same size, nor were they evenly distributed. We can notice instances of
mentioning a large number of priests in the same village. In Canon sources, the data on
limitations in the parish organization was noted, which primarily related to not creating too
small parishes and avoiding unnatural division of rural communities. Based on the data on
church taxes in medieval Serbia, it can be concluded that the minimal number of houses in
a parish was thirty. The fact that in Vlach katuns there were priests and churches confirms
that they were permanently inhabited communities, which were Ortodox and made Serbian.
The data from written sources, as well as a small number of field researches confirm that
churches in medieval century were a lot more common, and the number of priests was
larger than nowadays. That certainly had an effect on the denser parish network of the
Serbian church in the middle ages.
