Common Sense Parenting

Its hard to believe its that time of the year again, the first day is right around
the corner! Back to school reminder, Wednesday, August 10th.
7th and 8th Grade Students: 7:45 a.m.10:15 a.m.
6th Grade Students: 11:15 a.m.3:00 p.m.
Our aim is to make the traffic in front of NMS the safest and most efficient for
everyone. Please help by following these guidelines:
Please have your student exit your vehicle as soon as you are stopped on
campus, while in the right lane.
Please do not park in or near the handicap parking spots.
Consider dropping off across Center Street and have your students walk
over the bridge; you can also drop off at the top of the hill to avoid traffic.
Thank you for working together to help create a safer environment for everyone.

Our Mission Statement:

Millard North Middle School, an
International Baccalaureate
School, guarantees each student
will acquire the academic skills
necessary for personal
excellence and responsible living
in a global society by developing
inquiring, knowledgeable and
caring citizens who help create a
better world through
intercultural understanding and
respect. In our world-class
educational environment, all
students are challenged with
engaging and diverse
opportunities to become active,
compassionate,
lifelong learners.

Mark your calendars for our Open House on Tuesday, August 16th. The structure
of the event will be a true open house without a schedule.

6th Grade Open House will be from 5:00-6:15 p.m.

7th and 8th Grade Open House will be from 6:45-8:00 p.m.

At NMS, we recently redesigned our approach to fundraising. We no longer

hold fundraisers to benefit our school; instead we adopted the Money for
Mustangs program. There are several opportunities for parents/ guardians to
make a positive difference in your childs educational experience. Attached is our
donation and Proseeds form. If possible, please consider making a contribution
as our students can greatly benefit from them.
The wonderful NMS Staff and I feel privileged to be a part of this school family.
We thank you for your support and look forward to seeing you!
Sincerely,
Scott Ingwerson
Principal

Student-Led Conferences
The staff at Millard North Middle School is looking forward to meeting with all of our families for Student-Led
Conferences on October 13th & 14th from 4:30 8:00 pm. We are excited to use the web-based program,
Pick-A-Time, again this year to help us schedule your conference. We believe it makes the process easier and
more efficient for everyone.
Scheduling on Pick-A-Time will be activated on September 26th. There will be a link to the Pick-A-Time page
posted on the NMS web page. Please allow 30 minutes for your team conferences and another 30 minutes to
meet with special area teachers, including P.E. and world languages.

NURSE NOTES
We have a registered nurse, Mary Grieve, in the Nurses Office 4 days a week. The
nurses office is staffed by a trained health paraprofessional when the nurse is out. You may
receive a call that your child becomes ill at school. Sometimes a rest period in the Nurses
Office is all that is needed to help them feel better. There are times however, when a parent
will be asked to take a student home. If a childs fever is 100.4 or above, they are vomiting,
have diarrhea or show signs of a possible contagious illness, they may not return to class
Please inform the school of any health concerns your child may have. If a student requires prescription medication at school, a parent or guardian must deliver the medication to
the health room. It must be kept in its original container with a current prescription label. Inhalers may be
kept in the health room, or carried by the student if a doctor has signed the appropriate permission form.
Non-prescription medications may be transported to school by a student, but must be brought to the health
room. Medications are given by the nurse or health paraprofessional following a parents instructions. Students are allowed to carry cough drops in school without a note from the parent.

Please feel free to contact the school nurse at (402)715-1394 any time to discuss
your childs health care needs.

Student Supervision
Our campus is supervised by our staff before and after school. Supervision is provided inside and outside the school from 7:20-7:35 am and from 3:00-3:20 pm. Students who stay at school after 3:20
need to be with a teacher. This can include participating in a club or sport, working on assignments
with a teacher, staying in the Mustang Scholar Retreat (our aftercare program), or working in the library. The library will close each day at 3:25 each day. Students participating in clubs, sports, or other
activities need to plan ahead and arrange a ride home before participating in the event.

School Pictures
Pictures are scheduled for August 25th for students who missed
orientation in August.
Please stop by the main office and pick up the order form.

We need your help!

Please remember, it is disruptive to the learning process to page students during class time for nonemergency reasons. Please try to arrange rides home with your student before they come to school in
the morning. Also, encourage your child to leave you a message if they call you during the day. Your
child may call from another phone in the school, but the main office number will display in your call
history, so we in the office may not be aware of who called you and why.

Procedure for Absent or Tardy Students

On any day that your child is going to be absent or tardy from school, we ask you
call our office at (402)715-1280 between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m.

A written note brought to the main office will also be accepted to excuse the absence or tardy. You may
even call the office during the evening or early morning and leave a message on our voicemail. Please
call in advance if you know you will be traveling.

COUNSELING NEWS
Connecting with Your Childs School Counselor/Social Worker for a Successful School Year
Adapted from schoolcounselor.org

Understand the expertise and responsibilities of your childs school counselor. Both school counselors and social
workers make a measurable impact in every students life, assisting with academic, career and personal/social development. They function as a facilitator between parents, teachers and the student in matters concerning the students goals, abilities and any areas needing improvement. School counselors provide services not only to students
in need, but to all students.
Meet or contact your childs school counselor at least three times per school year. The beginning of a school year
is an excellent opportunity to initiate contact with your childs school counselor and doing so can ensure your
childs positive school experience. Find out who the counselor is and what his or her experience and background
are. By communicating with one another at the beginning, middle, and end of the school year, parents and counselors can have a definite impact on a childs success.
Both the School Social Worker and School Counselors at NMS are each assigned a grade level and stay with that
group of students throughout their time in middle school.

Discuss your childs challenges and concerns with the school counselor. As a parent, you know your child best.
However, the school counselor can help you better understand your child as a student. Its important to encourage
your childs expression of needs, hopes and frustrations. School counselors are trained to help your children.
Learn about your childs school and social connections from the school counselor. When you need information or
assistance, your childs school counselor can help you get in touch with the appropriate school officials; learn about
school policies on behavior, attendance, and dress; know the school calendar of important dates and stay connected with the school in many other ways. The school counselor can also help you locate resources in the community
when you need them.
Work with the school counselor to identify resources and find solutions to problems. If your child is having a
problem at school, it is important to work with your childs school counselor to find solutions. Discuss resources
available within and outside of the school, and get information on how such programs can benefit your child. Your
school counselor can be a valuable partner in your childs education and preparation for life beyond school.
