IV. Application (Volumes of Solids)

1. Set up an iterated integral equal to the volume of the solid G bounded below by the xy-plane
and above by z = 4 x2 y 2 .
2. Set up an iterated integral that represents the volume of the solid in thefirst octant bounded
by the parabolic cylinder z = 9 x2 and the plane x + y = 3
3. Let R be the triangular region in the xy-plane with vertices at(0, 0), (0, 1) and (1, 1). Set up
an iterated double integral equal to the volume of the solid whose base is R and whose height
for any (x, y) R is x2 + 2xy + y 2 .
4. Let R be the triangular region bounded by y = |x| and y = 1, and let G(x, y) = x2 y 2 = 1.
Set up the iterated integrals equal to the volume of the solid bounded by the xy-plane, the
graph of G, and the cylinder with rulings parallel to the z-axis whose xy trace is the boundary
of R.
5. Set up the iterated double integral needed to find the volume of the tetrahedron bounded by
x + 2y + z = 2, x = 2y, x = 0, and z = 0.
6. Set up the iterated double integral needed to find the volume of the solid bounded by the
coordinate planes and the plane 3x + 2y + z = 6.
7. Set up the iterated double integral needed to find the volume of the solid bounded by z = x,
y = x, x + y = 2 and z = 0.
8. Set up the double integral equal to the volume of the solid below the surface given by z = x2 +3y 4
above the triangular region on the xy-plane with vertices (0, 0), (0, 3) and (3, 0).
9. Set up an iterated double integral that gives the volume of the solid in the first octant bounded
above by the paraboloid z = 4 x2 y 2 , below by the xy-plane and on the sides by the planes
x + y = 1, x = y and x = 0.
10. Set up the double integral that will give the volume of the solid enclosed by the paraboloid
z = x2 + 3y 2 and the planes x = 0, y = 1, y = x and z = 0.
V. Challenge! (from the book of Stewart, Ch. 15, Problems Plus) Show that
