Script- Yellow house assembly

Slide 1:
Good morning and welcome to todays assembly.
I have previously introduced myself but for those who dont know who I am, Im
Georgia and I am the new Yellow House Captain for this year. Many of my friends say
that I am very competitive, so hopefully this year I will help lead Yellow House to
victory.
For todays assembly I will be talking about the Syrian refugee crisis. A refugee is a
person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution
or natural disasters.
Slide 2:
Heres a video about the issues surrounding this crisis.
Slide 4:
Since the civil war in Syria began 2011:
320,000 people have been killed
12,000 of those have been children
Its estimated that more than half the refugees involved in the crisis are under 18.
Personally I think that one of the most shocking facts is that 9,500 Syrians are being
displaced every day that's one family per minute.
Slide 5:
Have human rights been affected.
Slide 6:
Refugees and living conditions. Elaborate on the danger they are in, link to lack of
human rights they have as a result of being displaced. The cost of refugees with
international support has been limited. They are at a great risk of losing human rights.
Slide 7: Education.
Its been said many times before, but we often do forget how privileged we are to in a
position of being able to go to a school, especially as girls, its something that we all
take for granted. However the Syrian refugees have little to no access to education
since many schools and resources have been destroyed as a result of the war.
Education for girls especially was already extremely limited by the government and
cultural traditions, this has only been worsened by the war as it has become too
dangerous to even consider going to school. For many people finding enough food is
their top priority.
Slide 8: Food and waste
1.7m Syrian refugees have faced a food crisis as UN funds are cut
Lack of food resources means that more people at risk from malnutrition and
starvation
In constant need of supplies as not many sustainable long-term plans have been
introduced
Slide 9: Health
Health is a major issue surrounding this topic.

Script- Yellow house assembly

Many refugees have to live in cold conditions with a lack of food meaning these
people are subject to high risk of health issues.
However it is not just the physical health that has become a problem. Common
conditions for children in terms of mental health include: autism, aggressive behaviour
and constant fear due to traumatic events that they have witnessed.
Adults also commonly suffer from suicidal thoughts, post-traumatic reactions,
depression and anxiety, meaning that providing medication for physical issues isnt
enough to help people.
Slide 10: Transportation
Lack of safe transport to get to safer countries, many people in cramped conditions at
high risk of death
Slide 11: Issues outside Syria
Turkey is currently hosting 2.2 million refugees, which is currently the largest amount
in the world. This has caused major tensions between different groups. Refugees can
be detained for 18 months before being sent back to Syria. If they are forcibly taken
back this is a violation of human rights.
Slide 12:
EU = political union of 28 countries
EU immigration law focused on keeping people out of countries, rather than the
redistribution of people
Means that Syrian refugees have little legal protection
Slide 13:
Expanding on the idea that Syrian refugees have little legal protection, it often affects
their rights to:
Leave a country
Seek asylum
Not be discriminated against
Right to peace
Right to work
Slide 14:
So hopefully from this I have made you all want to go and help these Syrian refugees,
and if I have there are 2 main charities which focus on helping these refugees. They
are, save the children and Hand in hand for Syria. Save the children focus on
helping the children affected by the conflict as well as provide education, repair water
systems, provide food. Hand in hand for Syria has similar aims but focuses directly
on the Syrian refugee crisis by providing medical and food aid as well as education
and self-sustaining community projects
