Benchmarking is the process of identifying best practice in relation to both the
product and the processes by which those products are created and delivered. This
study note introduces the benchmarking process and types of benchmarking.
The search for best practice can exist inside a particular industry and also in other
industries - are there lessons to be learned from other industries?
The objective of benchmarking is to understand and evaluate the current position of
a business or organization in relation to best practice and to identify areas and
means of performance improvement.
The Benchmarking Process
Benchmarking involves looking outward (outside a particular business, organization,
industry, region or country) to examine how others achieve their performance levels,
and to understand the processes they use.
In this way, benchmarking helps explain the processes behind excellent
performance. When lessons learned from a benchmarking exercise are applied
appropriately, they facilitate improved performance in critical functions within an
organization or in key areas of the business.
The application of benchmarking involves four key steps:

Internal Benchmarking
Real innovation may be lacking, and best in class performance is more likely to be
found through external benchmarking

Accordingly with the information given about what is benchmarking, answer the
following questions taking into account the four key steps:
1. How would you apply the benchmarking to a company that sell ice-cream?
2. How would you apply the benchmarking to a business of selling airplane
tickets?
SOLUTION:
1) For a company of sale of ice creams, we will compare with other companies
as for:
Location of his point of sale.
Class of clientele of the sector in the one that is located the business.
Promotions that he handles.
I warn of the business.
