Scene: Its Sunday and Mihir has came to Jacobs house to

meet him. Mihir rings the door bell and Jacobs open the door.
Jacobs: Hey Mihir, how are you ?? come come, come inside !!
Mihir: I m fine!! I was getting bored so thought to visit you as
you are the only one whom I know here.
Jacobs: No problem buddy. It will take time to make friends over
here in NZ as you are new over here.
Mihir: ya ya.. was just missing my home back in India.
Jacobs: It happens man. Here, take the coffee.
Mihir: Thank you!! Sooo what is your plan for today !!
Jacobs: not decided yet. I want to ask you something mate if
you dont mind !!
Mihir: ya, it is absolutely fine, ask.
Jacobs: English does not seem to be your primary language,
because you have a very different accent while speaking
English. Why so ??
Mihir: ya right, my mother toungue is gujarati. Thats the
language I use to speak In India.
Jocobs: oh!! I see. So every Indian Speak this language ?
Mihir: No No.. This language is mostly used in Gujarat state of
India to where I belong.
Jacobs: so every person in Gujarat speaks this gujarati
language, Right ??
Mihir: Its not like. In country like India language of peoples are
different and it changes at about after every 100 kilometres.
Even gujarati languages are also different kinds.
Jacobs: Incredible!! But it sounds a bit strange. I mean can that
be ??
Mihir: Ill tell you. See Guajarati spoken in the surat city of
Gujarat will be different than the gujarati spoken in the
Ahmadabad city.

Jacobs: for example ??

Mihir: like if I want to ask what are you doing ?? in gujarati. So
being an ahmedabadi i will say su kare che ?? and a surati
person will say hu karya karto che ??
Jacobs: thats interesting man. But whats this ahmedabadi
and Surati ??
Mihir: people who belong to ahmedabad are known as
ahmedabadi and people belonging to surat are known as
surati. In such a manner people from different region are
known differently.
Jacobs: so you belong to ahmedabad ??
Mihir: ya, my family and ancestors belonged to ahmedabad.
Family plays a major role in defining our language.
Jacobs: how?
Mihir: because from childhood my family members were the
one from whom i learnt to speak in gujarati. And this regional
language is gasped from them only.
Jacobs: so in your family gujarati is the only language spoken ?
Mihir: yes that is the case in my family. They speak in gujarati
only.
Jacobs: all these stuff is really exciting. You know gujarati &
English language only ? if that is the case how did you started
to speak in English ??
Mihir: No No, other than gujarati and English language I can
speak Hindi as well. Hindi is the national language of India. I
joined an English medium school. There were some students
who were from different region of Gujarat or from other states
of India & hence their languages were also different.
Jacobs: okk. So how you learnt Hindi & English ?
Mihir: some students who didnt knew Gujarati language used
to speak in Hindi to interact with other students. And more than
that school syllabus also included Hindi & English as a subject.
Jacobs: I understand that English as a subject is okk in an
English medium school but why Hindi ?

Mihir: as I told you that Hindi is the national language of India.

So any person in India if doesnt know the language of other
regions then Hindi is the language which can be used to
interact with other person of different region. So it was a
compulsory language subject included in the syllabus of the
Primary schools.
Jacobs: so why English in India ?
Mihir: English is a global language. To interact with the people
globally we learn English. And moreover it also helps to get a
better Job.
Jacobs: Got that buddy. How are these languages taught to
you?
Mihir: languages are started to be taught from the 1 st standard
of the school. And method of teaching these languages is
grammar based & a bit of translation based.
Jacobs: so does these other languages your mother toungue ?
Mihir: ya, they have a huge impact. Many times it happens
while speaking Gujarati I unknowingly use some English & Hindi
words. And they come naturally. So these other languages have
a large impact on my Gujarati language. But its every persons
own unique way of speaking. In my case while speaking English
i use lot of Ya. while speaking gujarati many times I end up
speaking a cuss word or two. So these happens speaking
pattern change from person to person.
Jacobs: Great. I must tell, it was really exciting talking about all
these with you. Now lets go and have a game of Football on my
play station.
Mihir: ya sure. Lets go.
