INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON BIOMASS

I. PURPOSE AND SIGNIFICANCE

In order to promote the implementation of Strategy on Renewable Energy
development, the National action on Green Growth and Application of Science
and Technology in the Decisions No. 2068 / Q-TTg dated 25/11/015; No. 403 /
Q-TTg dated 20/03/2014; No. 575/ Q-TTg dated 04/05/2015 of the Prime
Minister. Vietnam Energy Association (VEA) will organize International seminar
with the theme: "Scientific, practical basisBiomass Energy Development
Support Policies in Vietnam". The seminar will introduce the "Vietnam Biomass
Energy - Sciences and Practices" handbook to identify the potential, reserves,
the technologies using biomass for power generation and other fields; the
solutions of energy technology; policy and mechanisms; supporting funds relating
to development and investment. In order to disseminate information and
communication about exploitation and utilization of biomass energy in the
country, bring great effects to the economy, serve the society and the country
towards the goal of sustainable growth and reduce greenhouse gas, reduce
pollution, enhance energy security, enhance economic efficiency, improve public
health and quality of life, promote the development of agriculture, forestry,
Industry and energy metabolism. The opinions, contributions in the seminar will
be synthesized to serve the research, criticism, recommendations, and proposals
to the State agencies about the Biomass Energy Development Support Policies
in Vietnam.

II. INTRODUCTION OF BIOMASS ENERGY

Biomass energy is the Renewable forms of energy, biomass, also known as
biomass, is a crude form organic material, a form of biological material from life
or living things.
Biomass includes natural plants, industrial plants, algae and other plants,
agricultural and forestry residues. Biomass also includes wastes of human life,
such as wastes from the production of foods, drinking water, mud / sewage,
fertilizers, organic, industrial by-product, (industrial by-product) and organic
components of domestic wastes... Purpose of using Generating electricity,
heating, creating gas, biofuel, steam, fertilizers, fuel ...
Biofuels are fuels that derived from biomass materials. Biofuels include 3 types:

+ Liquid fuel
- Gasohol (gasohol), including bio - methanol, ethanol, butanol
- Biodiesel (biodiesel)
- Ethanol (or ethyl alcohol), ethanol cellulose
+ Biogas (biogas)
+ Solid Fuels
Biofuels are divided into following groups
+ From the crops: sugar cane, beets, corn, cassava, vegetable oil ...
+ From the industrial plants, jatropha curcas (jatropha, switchgrass, halophyte
trees); industrial wastes, urban wastes, by-products or waste in the production,
living which have organic origins for example: forestry wastes (straw, bagasse,
corn stalks, sawdust, wood chips ...) livestock wastes: (manures, sewer
sludge ...) domestic waste: (oil, grease ...)
Biodiesel that was produced from algae according to research is 10 times higher
than produced from soybean.
Metabolism of biomass includes:
+Thermochemical
conversion
(combustion),
gasification and pyrolysis.

(thermochemical)

including

combustion

+Biochemical conversion (biochemical) including anaerobic digestion (Methanol

and CO2 mixtures), fermentation (ethanol) and by a mechanical process for
producing biodiesel and glycerin products.
- Biomass from agricultural waste, transformation of microbiological technologies
using fito-biomix RR bioproducts into organic fertilizer.
Using biomass to generate energy that has a positive impact on the environment.
This is attractive energy source with high yields, meeting important part of energy
needs of the world as well as Vietnam by the following reasons:
+ Speed of growing alternative crops, wastes, supplements faster than the
supplements of fossil energy which requires millions of years,

+ More evenly distributed over the surface of the Earth (more than fossil fuels)
+ Create opportunities for locals, regions and countries around the world to self
assurance of energy supply independently.
+ Alternatives for fossil fuels, help to improve the situation of climate change
which are threatening the Earth. Helping local farmers in difficult time and
creating jobs in rural areas in order to reduce poverty and develop new rural
constructions.
