WRITTEN REPORT: INTRODUCTION OF VOICE AND TEMPO AND

CHUNKING
Do you realize that what you say is actually not as important as how you say it?
And scientists have long proved that: only 17 per cent of our impression from a
communication comes from words said. No matter how interesting your speech
looks on the paper, if you deliver it in a boring monotone, standing dead there in
front of everybody, value of your presentation comes to nothing.
WHAT IS VOICE?

a musical instrument. It has endless emotional capacity, and is

able to make deepest impressions upon its listeners. And we dont

need to pay for this instrument its always there with you.
your main instrument while giving a presentation. Not slides and

not curious facts. Even a great story will fall flat if delivered poorly.
On the other side, vocal delivery is able to create suspense,
enthusiasm, and excitement, to complement the drama of the
plot, to make your story much more vivid and easier for listeners to
follow.
EFFECTIVE VOCAL DELIVERY:
1. Tempo and Chunking
Never rush and vary the speed-dont talk at the same

pace all the time.

Pause from time to time-a few seconds of silence are
sometimes just as effective as words. Pausing in the wrong
place sounds like a hesitation. But nothing is more dramatic

than a well-placed pause.

Use The Right Tempo-do not speak in a slow, drawn-out
manner. The speed of speech affects how your message is
interpreted. Increase your tempo when you wish to convey
excitement or urgency. Slow down when you want your
words to sink in.

Pongasi, Celestine Neri N.

VOLUME
Adjust your voice to the size of your audience, to the room youre presenting in.
There is no need to shout, yet everybody must hear you clearly. Vary the volume.
A quieter part can contrast with a louder part and create dramatically different
effects.
ARTICULATION
The sounds will be clearer if you dont rush your words. If you
anticipate difficulty in pronouncing certain key words, practice them
beforehand. Usually the problem is the syllable stress.

1. THINK FIRST & SLOW DOWN YOUR SPEECH

One of the best ways to become more verbally articulate is to first stop and
think. Think clearly about what you want to say before you say it so that you
don't ramble and stumble over your words as your thoughts come. Not only that,
slow down your speech - there's no rush to get your words out and honestly,
you'll sound more intelligent if you speak in a slower, concise way!

2. AVOID VERBAL PAUSES

Pausing when you're speaking, even casually with another person, comes across
as lack of knowledge and confidence. If you need to catch your thoughts, silent
pauses are a much better alternative than "umm" or "uhh" because they show
pensive thought!

3. PRACTICE COMMUNICATING VERBALLY WITH A CLOSE FRIEND

If you have trouble verbally articulating your thoughts, chances
are #people close to you know your struggle. Practice having verbal
conversations with those who care about you and whom you trust as often as

possible! This will help you to become more articulate in unknown social settings
and will boost your confidence in your ability to be understood and heard!

4. KNOW WHAT YOU'RE SPEAKING ABOUT

Often times, it's easy to get caught up in a conversation that sounds interesting
but you may not have much knowledge on the subject. Speaking just to speak
and be a part of the conversation is a good way to stumble upon words and
thoughts - no one sounds articulate in these situations where knowledge is
lacking, and we've definitely all been there! It's best to stay silent and interject
only when you know the topic well.

5. PROCESS ON PAPER
If you're an internal processor and need to write out your thoughts to make
sense of them, then go ahead and do it! You will have something to refer back to
and review what you've been thinking, you won't forget anything and you'll be
better equipped to speak well when your thoughts have been processed. This
works best with planned conversations or public speaking, but it also works when
you just need to gather your thoughts!

6. READ, READ, READ

Perhaps it's expanded vocabulary that's missing from your language skills or
using proper grammar that's holding you back. In the times we live in, short
handing and abbreviating #everything and using slang, make us all sound less
intelligent than we really are. Stop using these nuances to communicate and
instead choose the proper form of words seen in all professional writing
material. #Read as often as you can to expand your vocabulary and knowledge!

7. BE CONFIDENT!
Most importantly, be confident when you speak! Stand tall, make #eye
contact and don't nervously fidget. Slight stumbling over #words will go
unnoticed when you have the confidence in who you are and how you speak to
others. Just remember that body language makes a huge impact when
conversing with others.

Pitch and Intonation
1) Pitch:
-

High pitch and low pitch

o

High pitch = soprano

Low pitch = bass

This is not just giving information, but interpreting it

Showing listeners what it means for you and all

A good way of varying the pitch is to introduce question into your

presentation.

Be CAREFUL of high pitch! Some people subconsciously like high pitch

less than low voice and vice versa.

Dont change your pitch too often and too dramatically you will make
sound like a weird opera singer.

2) Stress
-

Stressing particular words can change the entire meaning of the

sentence.

How it changes the presentation as well?

o

It can be more just difficult

We all agree on this

They dont

We do little about it

And many other meaning revealed according to the stress stated

Example

Were all responsible (affirmation)

Were all responsible (ugly, shame)

Were all responsible (repentance)

Wrong stressing can have a wrong message to the audience.

Too much stress can make the presentation boring (and sometimes
boring.)

Sentence length and style

You dont need to have a very long and catchy phrases all you need to do
is
to make your listeners understand what you are saying . We all have

different style in speaking

so you dont need to imitate what style others make. In speaking we all
have unique
style in speaking so be natural.
Language Mistakes and accent

We should be mindful on the words that come out in our mouth . To

prevent unwanted words
to be said we need to take a pause everytime so that our mind could catch

up to what we say. Also,

to improve the way we speak we use different accent so that our listener
would like to listen in
what we say.
Lim, Matthew
PACING
You can use pauses to slow your pace down and make your sentences easier to
understand and more effective sounding. Group words into phrases according to
their meaning and make pauses between the phrases.

In my opinion we should go into other markets.

In my opinion // we should go // into other markets.
On the other hand, the figures prove that we are on the right track.
On the other hand, // the figures prove // that we are on the right track.
In general, you should slow down to make your most important pints. This gives
your message time to sink in.

EMPHASIZING
IT is always a good idea to exaggerate a little it helps to get your message
across persuasively and to dramatically change the significance of what you say.
There are various ways to emphasize some ideas in a speech.
First, you can stress words which are normally unstressed or
contracted.
These are mainly auxiliary verbs (be, have, can, etc.) and negatives.
For example, read out the following sentences, stressing the underlined words:
Neutral Remark

Emphatic Remark

Its our best chance of success.

It is our best chance of success.

We were hoping for a better deal.

We were hoping for a better deal.

Were doing the best we can.

We are doing the best we can.

Weve tried to limit the damage.

We have tried to limit the

damage.
We cant go ahead with this.

We cannot go ahead with this.

I see what you mean.

I do see what you mean.

They promised completion by June.

They did promise completion by

June.
It isnt cost-effective.
Do we or dont we believe in service?
believe in service?

Its not cost-effective.

Do we or do we not

Second, you can place emphasis on particular words and phrases.

Look at the following and notice how the effect is changed by a change
of emphasis:
This was successful.
This was very sucCESSful.
This was VEry successful.

Third, you can use so-called intensifiers to emphasize your points.

Im afraid it just isnt good enough the entire system needs updating.
We really need to rethink our whole recruitment procedure.
Paying off such a substantial loan is going to be extremely difficult.
Weve done much better than we expected even better than we did last
year.
Thats absolutely no chance at all of us going into profit in the first two years.

Adverbs are especially often used as intensifiers.

Intensifier adverbs can be total, very strong, or moderate.
Total

Very strong

absolutely (fantastic)
completely (awful)

Moderate

extremely (good)
very (bad)

fairly (safe)
reasonably

(expensive)
entirely (depressing)

quite (cheap)

In more formal speech some verbs and intensifier adverbs form fixed
expressions. Your English will greatly benefit from learning such expressions. A
typical pattern is:
Subject

Intensifier

Main Verb

Complement

completely

agree

We

firmly

oppose

with everything youve said

so far.
any suggestion that

the company be sold.

Fourth, another way of emphasizing your thought is the what ... is ...
pattern.
Using it, you can focus key points so that everyone knows
you want them to listen to what you have to say next.
Compare:
We cant expect too much.
What we cant do is expect too much too soon.
Id like to approach this question from two different angles.
What Id like to do is approach this question from two different angles.
And finally, you can actually use the verbs to stress, emphasize, etc.
Id like to stress the following point.
Id like to draw your attention to the latest figures.
Id like to emphasize that our market position is excellent.
