I. Overview
The Philippines is an archipelago consisting of 7,107 islands located in Southeast Asia. It has a
total area of 300,000km. It is separated by 3 main islands, namely Luzon, Visayas and
Mindanao. Transportation is a key sector in the Philippine economy, because it links population
and economic centers across the islands.
The transport system of the Philippines consists of land, water and air transport. Water transport
plays an important role due to the archipelagic nature of the country. Water travel is the primary
means of getting from island to island, and it is the backbone of the Philippines overall
transportation system. Road transport is by far the most dominant subsector accounting for 98%
of passenger traffic and 58% of cargo traffic. The railway system of the Philippines also falls
under land transport but is only limited and operational in Metro Manila. In the 21st century, the
Philippines saw a rise not only in the water and land transport but the air transport has also
increased rapidly.

III. Transportation Analysis

The most important data in the transportation industry helps investors gain insight into the
movement of goods across the globe. People developed land, water and air transport as a
means of moving people from one place to another through the use of automobiles, ships
and airplanes. Not only is transportation used for moving people but it also used to move
goods through the help of a shipping firm or a courier service.
This category is divided into three modes:
1. Land
Currently, the road transport is by far the most dominant subsector accounting for
98% of passenger traffic and 58% of cargo traffic. According to the Land
Transportation Office (LTO), as of 2014, there are a total of 8,081,224 registered
motor vehicles in the Philippines they are composed of private, government and
diplomatic vehicles. There is an increase of 4.06% in the registration of vehicles.
*Besides registered vehicles, the Philippines has also invested in rail transportation
but they are owned by the state and they are not publicly listed companies
2. Water
The water transportation in the Philippines is currently governed by the Philippine
Ports Authority. Passenger traffic for the year reached 62.55 million as compared to
55.99 million recorded in 2014, or a difference of 11.92%.
