CanvasinFullSwing

All four core teachers on the

MLK team are beginning to use
Canvas. Weve spent this past
week working through somekinks
to help the students better
understand the capabilities of this
outstanding learning management
system.
Students can login to
Canvas through the app or go to
https://wcpss.instructure.com/.
Logins are the same as their
WCPSS
google
drive
login
and at
this
point
all
students should be familiar with
their login and password
information.
Teachers will be
using the modules tab to list
assignments; its important that
students access their work
through the modules tab of each
individual class rather than
worrying about the noti ications
screen which can show what is
being added by all of their
teachers. New things added to
Canvas do not necessarily mean
theyarehomework,itcouldbean

activity that we have added for

class in an upcoming day.
Anything assigned will be
communicated to the students in
class.
Canvas also some outstanding
communication
functionality.
Students have an inbox with
noti ications that allow us to send
personal feedbackonassignments,
messages to students missing
assignmentsandmuchmore.

Challenge
Learning

Based

On team MLK we are very

excited to give students the
opportunity to explore their
passionswithinthecurriculums
we teach. CBL starts with
engagement

allowing
students to connect their
interests in the world to our
content in school, and develop
an idea for a problem they
could try to solve. Next, the
students move to investigate
where they will ask questions,
organize those questions and
research
the
answers.
Sometimes this process results
in deeper questions to be
explored and leads to changes
in the inal viewed. I gave back

Product that students will

produce. Then students use
their research to act. This is
where they will develop their
idea into anactionthatanswers
their big
question,
or helps to
solve their
problem.
CBL
is
designed
to be open,
engaging,
and
challenging. It helps students
learn tobecuriousthinkersand
problem solvers and helps to
extend learningbeyondtheunit
test, beyond 6th grade, and out
intotheworld.

Ms.EdwardsELA
In ELA this week students
worked hard to analyze important
quotes from the short story, The
Jacket. They worked to identify
the important literary terms of
setting, con lict, dialogue, mood,
plot as well as narrators point of
view. Students made a paper
foldable to act asareferenceguide
forthesetermsandfoundallofthe
elements in the text. Next week

we will be reading the short story

Eleven by Sandra Cisneros. This
is another comingofagestorythat

becoming a tweenager and the
desire for independence as well as
longing for the simplicity of
childhood. They will start on the
new vocabulary study called
Wordly Wise on Monday. During
Warm Up students will be
introduced to fourteen words that
have some connection to the
Statue
of
Liberty.
We will

activities with these words for the
next two weeks including
grammar connections. Please be
sure to be checking in with your
child to make sure that they have
an independent reading book that
is of interest to them. Grades will
be updated on PowerSchool
starting next week! This is agreat
way to see your childs progressin

Mr.JonesScience

This week in science students

were introducedto15ofthemajor
plant partsfoundinnature.During
the middle of the week students
participated in both independent
and collaborative groups to begin
to identify and understand the
location as well as the function of
each of these parts. In preparation
for Fridays plant parts quiz,
students worked together to
compete against their classmates
using two relatively new online
vocabulary

sites

QuizletLive and Quizizz. To

inish out the week, students
completed
their
vocabulary
quizzes and begin to think about
and create a ictional plant. Next
