HEAT STROKES & HEAT EXHAUSTION: WOULD YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO?
It is time again for all contractors and subcontractors to familiarize themselves with the symptoms and treatment
for those hot weather dangers: Heat exhaustion and Heat stroke.
Anytime the temperature rises above 90F(32-33C), the danger exists that persons exposed to the direct sun may
be affected with heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

ROAD VISIBILITY AND COMMUNICATION

An important part of safety in our job site is how we maintain visibility and communication. As a review of the
visibility measures we have adapted, all employees are required to wear a safety traffic vest whenever they are
going to be at the main dam, tunnels, near heavy equipment or high traffic areas. Small vehicles are also required
to have strobe lights and rip rods whenever they shall go to any active hauling area. Foot traffic at the main dam
is also required to have helmet mounted blinking lights at night and some nightshift employees wear the battery
powered blinking safety vest. Imagine all these equipment in order just to be seen.
Add to that the unique signals we use to communicate on site using a traffic wand, flashlight or miners lamp. We
have adapted the signal system used by miners to communicate.
A light that is being flashed full circle and then pointed to a road direction means GO.
A light that is moved horizontally (left to right) repeatedly means STOP.
While a light that moves vertically (up and down) means MOVE BACK OR REVERSE.

ENVIRONMENTAL TIP:

The above topic(s) are to be discussed at the weekly safety meeting by all Superintendents and Contractors. Each Superintendent and
each contractor are to discuss additional safety topic(s) specifically related to the area of operation and work being undertaken.

BIODEGRADABLE - It means the material can be broken down into its basic components safely and quickly by
microorganisms and enzymes, disappearing into the environment without harmful effects. Some rates of biodegradability:
paper 2 to 5 months; plastic bag 10 to 20 years; glass bottle 1 million years; plastic bottle never.
