What is smartphone? As we know smartphone was a version of mobile phone that was
upgraded. The different between smartphone and mobile phone was their functions. For example,
smartphone didnt have keypad and it has the functions of internet. What are the advantages of
bringing mobile phone to school? It could provide a lot of function, it also an effective and
reliable tools and features. Students also can use it while emergency situation and it can help
them keep in touch with their parents.
Technology plays an important role in twenty first century. Modern advancements such as
the invention of smartphones have made life much more easy and convenient. Smartphones are
creating convenience for students that can be functional in many places and purpose such as
researching and communicating. Smartphones can substitute notebook when students go for class
without any notebook or tablets. The things that we previously had to do on the computer can
now be done in the palm of our hand. Thus, the basic smartphones now come with at least short
message service (SMS) and the basic features that included such as internet access, web browser,
applicable for everyone and portable. Although smartphones create convenience, parents have
the responsibility to instruct children to use smartphones in the right way. Smartphones are not
phones just for gaming or social networking. With the built-in Internet capabilities, most of the
students use smartphones to communicate and keep in touch with friends and family through
Facebook messenger, WhatsApp and WeChat because it is free and just need network or 3G Data
to access. Not only can that, with the internet access, students always access internet or Wi-Fi to
search any information that they want everywhere.
Apart from that, allowing smartphone in school can help students in their study.
Smartphone are most useful, effective and reliable tools and features. They have a camera, a
notebook, an internet connection, a calculator and so on. Using a smartphone in school can
certainly help student when doing homework and research. For example, a camera equipped

phone can be used to take picture that related to school projects or assignment. This has proven
that allowing smartphone in school is definitely an advantage and very useful in academic. Other
than that, other tools such as calculator can be used in Mathematics lesson when the students
forgot to bring their scientific calculator. For those who using the calculator function in
smartphone, it is actually an advantage for them rather than they do nothing in Mathematics
lesson. Thus, students can get benefits from smartphone if they use for good purposes. Besides,
students can google anything on the spot when lecturer gave some task to them. For instances,
they can use the internet connection to find information of the task given. Therefore, academic
help is an advantage of allowing smartphone in school that brings more benefits than harm
especially to students in school.
Emergency contact is one of the reason that smart phone shouldnt ban in school. Based
on the results that we are searching from internet, that was a case happen at Columbia High
School on 20 April 1999. Two teenagers walked into Columbia High School carrying submachine guns and homemade bombs intending to do some major image in school. Thirteen
innocent students were murdered and many more would have been. One of the students of that
high school is hiding for his life. This student calls 911 and describe the location of the school
and what the murderers looked like. Try to imagine if there are no cell phone for the student and
many others, the amount of student who are been murdered are not that less. Of course, students
can use public phone to make an emergency call, but it is too late to take the action because
students are taking the risk to use public phone to make an emergency call and valuable time can
be lost when finding a nearby phone. It may lead them to dangerous. When there are happen
emergency situations, students not only taking their risks to make an emergency call to
appropriate authorities, they also cannot even find a public phone at the roadside. This is
because, public phone have been destroyed by spoilers. They love to destroy stuff at the roadside
or playgrounds that build by government. Family also can contact with their children in case of
an emergency situation or when their children need to arrange a different method of getting
home. For example, students can contact their parents to arrange a ride home when ill or they can
request a forgotten book or project be brought to the school.
As supporting to the point of emergency contacting above, the benefits of bringing smart
phones to school can be able to provide a sense of securities to student and parents at the same

time, by keeping in touch between the both parties. Sense of security is the ability of mobile
phones to reduce uncertainty and provide feelings of safety for its users. For an example, every
smartphone can be able to install an application of Global Positioning System (GPS) which is a
navigation system that provides location and time information in any weather conditions. Hence,
the parents can use this application to track their children in an emergency situation time during
schooling. Cause who knows and no one can able to predict what will happen in the next
minutes, so this is the best security way to protect students by keeping in contact with their
parents. Besides, by sticking in point sense of securities, students will tend to be more secure
while they are having smart phones with them during schooling hours. For an example, although
every school are providing public phones, but there is still having vandalism case that damage
and spoilt the public phone and lead to difficulties to other students who need to make an
emergency call. Thus, if school did not banned student who brings smart mobile phones to
school, it will make their life in school much easier and less dependency on public phones as
well.
