Mrs
R006:

User requirements
I have been asked to create a competition entry for Progress Media- the
photography company- to take part in the competition named The
camera never lies. (Or does it?), which is a manipulated image (suitably
sized to be printable on an A4 sheet) which sums up the theme of London,
which I can create by sourcing images on the internet or creating and
scanning in my designs. This will be viewed by the competition judges
who will be marking me by a previously-selected success criteria. It will be
used to promote London, the local area and my target market will be the
judges as well as the local community. The message I need to provide
must be one that perfectly represents and promotes London as to have a
greater chance of winning the competition for creativity as well as
supporting the community.
Success Criteria
The success criteria that I must meet are:

Having a high quality final product with a high pixel count.

Being creative and eye-catching/aesthetically pleasing.
Promoting the local area- creating a positive image of London.
Being suitable for printing on an A4 sheet.
Having images that are appropriately sourced to avoid copyright
issues.

I have chosen these specific success criteria as upon completion I will be

assured that my product is suitable for winning the competition due to
these suiting the design brief supplied. If the product is of a high quality in
turn it will be aesthetically pleasing and that will give me a greater chance
at winning the competition and successfully promoting the local area. By
promoting the local area- I will have a greater chance of winning the
competition as well as improving the image of London- promoting tourism
and economic growth. If the product is suitable for printing of an A4 sheet,
it will be useful as somewhat of a poster which can be posted in the local
community upon winning the competition to further promote London. By
appropriately sourcing the images- I will avoid copyright, allowing me to
win the competition without problems

I have selected these images as they are good images to represent
London as well as being easily manipulated into an A4 sheet as will be
needed for my final product. I have also decided that I will choose images
with little copyright problems in order to prevent there being hindrances
to me winning the competition so that I can properly promote London.
Mind Map

This is my mind map showing what I might include in my product and is a

brainstorm surrounding the key themes of London and key symbols that I
could use to fully promote London in my product. I have commented on
colours, buildings, landmarks and communications as these are key points
to comment on that would allow me to fully promote London through my
product as it will be eye catching and suitable for an A4 sheet in order to
meet the success criteria to promote my product.

results I created a table that shows how the people I interviewed are
opinionated surrounding certain key themes of London- which has
helped me to plan my product further. From these results, I can tell
that I should involve: the symbols of the underground; colours like
blue, white and red and landmarks like St. Pauls Cathedral to best
represent London- which I know is reliable due to my results coming
from, mainly, those who visit often and with a purpose- in order to
stand the best chance of winning and successfully promoting
London. My results were mostly good for me as they are the most
expected and this allows me to use my instinct to my advantage, as
I already have a product idea with the expected answers- making

Image

Explain how it meets the

success criteria
The image I have designed is an
A4 sized image which meets the
success criteria by being suitable
for printing on an A4 sheet. It also
contains many different images, 5,
which makes it eye catching. I
have also chosen images that can
be morphed to remove copyright
issue. It promotes the local area as
it uses the images that best
promote London positively e.g. the
London Eye. Finally, it will have a
high pixel count and high quality
finish as I used high quality images
which have a high pixel count. I will
use a wide variety of bright colours
which will be eye-catching.
The image that I have designed is
an A4 image which is thus
printable in that format. It also
contains 5 different images
representing London landmarks
therefore will promote London. The
bright colours that I will use, and
image positioning are aesthetically
pleasing and overall the image is
eye-catching. I am using images
that I have already sourced and
that are easily manipulated to
prevent copyright issue and create
a better image. It will have a high
pixel count thus a high resolution
finish which will be aesthetically
pleasing and better promote the
area.

Mrs
The final image that I have is
designed an A4 image and
therefore it will be printable in said
format. It contains 5 different eyecatching London landmarks, fusing
the ideas of my previous designs,
and therefore will promote London
and will be aesthetically pleasing
for the judges. I have also chosen
images that I have appropriately
sourced and are easily
manipulated to prevent copyright
issue. Finally, it will have a high
pixel count and finish and therefore
will better promote the area and
potentially reduce copyright issue
furthermore.

Skills from R001, R002 and R005

R001
In R001, I learnt about different types of software, the 3 types are Utility
Software, Application Software and Operating Systems. Utility Software is
used for security e.g. scheduling back-ups to preserve data and using
defragmentation, which compares the data to similar data on an external
hard-drive to verify it. This is useful as it can be used when you are
inactive and ensures your computer is safe and fully protected from
potential breach. Application Software has many uses e.g. spreadsheet
software for recording data or word processing data for creating and
preparing word documents. Application software is very useful as each
type has a different use which can be used for many types of data and can
provide many types of useful conclusions for product design. Finally,
Operating Systems are used to manage the computer software and deals
with errors and usually follows a set design dependent on the type e.g.
iOS uses applications where as windows provides a user interface.
Operating Systems are crucial in keeping a system safe and must be
updated regularly to ensure the system has a high processing speed and
is easily usable.
R002
In R002, I learnt about graphics manipulations software where I made an
animated banner. I studied the features of Adobe Fireworks e.g. the
magic wand to remove a wide area of the image and the lasso to draw
a selected area of the image to remove or move. I thought that using
graphics manipulation software was important as it allowed me to create a

R006
Daniel Chalk
Mrs
Blackwell- 11AC
professional looking banner and edit my images appropriately to prevent
copyright issue which will be useful in R006. I also used database
management software, where you can create customer queries to
research set customers and assign users a primary key to better
differentiate between customers, and spreadsheet software, where I can
use auto-sum to do my calculations and conditional formatting to indicate
to myself whether my goal was met, in order to work with finance and
customer data. These were both useful in management of data as they
allowed me to collect data so that I could use it efficiently for my final
product. Overall, in R002, I used different types of software that all played
a role in the design of my final product and data management and were
the best software to use due to their useful features as explained above.
R005
In R005, I re-used graphics manipulation software where I made an
animated banner, logo and buttons. In graphics manipulation software I
used tools like magic wand to remove blank space and the crop tool to
prevent copyright issue. This was useful as it ensured my final product
was legally made and secure. I also used spreadsheet software to manage
a questionnaire where I used the sorting tool to organise the questions to
make the questionnaire appear more professional. This was useful as it
allowed me to plan a professional product and ensure my product was
desirable. Finally, I used presentation software to make my final product
where I used tools like master slide to maintain a consistent house style
and slide animations to make my product aesthetically pleasing. This was
useful as it had many useful tools which allowed me to make my product
aesthetically pleasing and fully interactive.
Chosen software
I have chosen to use photo-editing software, in the form of Adobe
Photoshop, because the features will be the best for manipulating and
fusing my images into one final statement piece, as I can use the variety
of crop tools to resize the image so that they fit together, blur tools to
make some images stand out more than others and the colouring tools so
that I can change the colours of my images to make a statement. These
tools will be useful in allowing me to make the highest quality product
which will best promote the area and meet the success criteria. It will
meet the success criteria by allowing me to manipulate the image in order
to prevent copyright issue, having an A4 format so that I can print my
product in A4, allowing me to use any image from the internet so that I
can use my images that will best promote London, allowing me to make
my product aesthetically pleasing by applying a range of eye-catching
effects and allowing me to manipulate my images to improve the pixel
count to increase a higher quality image-also being aesthetically pleasing.
Some alternative software are graphics manipulation software, in the form

R006
Daniel Chalk
Mrs
Blackwell- 11AC
of Adobe Fireworks and desktop publishing software, in the form of
Microsoft Publisher. In graphics manipulation software you can
manipulate images and create interactive products through states. This
has tools like cropping tools to resize the image in different ways and
colouring tools to change the colours of the images as well as the
backgrounds. In desktop publishing software you can create letter/advert
style documents using mainly text. This has tools like the text tool, with
the font colour, size and style tools as well as text box tools to apply text
to certain images and rearrange the text. However, I have chosen not to
use these software because graphics manipulation software lacks some
tools that are present in photo editing software which I need to improve
the quality of my image and blend the images and desktop publishing
software is limited with image manipulation so will not be applicable to my
initial brief.
Set image size and resolution with consideration for pixel
dimensions and dpi
The term resolution is used to describe how pixels are present in a
standard length, an example of a resolution could be 1280 x 1024 with
the standard format being width x length. PPI and DPI are very similar
meaning pixels per inch and dots per inch and are another way of
describing a computer monitors resolution as shown above. Dots per inch
is just relating to the amount of dots that can be applied by a printer to
produce the image whereas pixels per inch is just relating to the distance
between the technological pixels. High definition simply means that the
screen has a very high resolution, being as high as 1920 x 1080 (normal
TV screens are around 720 x 576. The phrase 1080p means the screen/
video can run HD as 1080 pixels is a standard HD value. Photoshop has a
variable resolution and uses PPI however on the whole it is relatively low
of a resolution but can depend on the monitor/ version of the program
used. Features in Photoshop include: resizing/deleting where parts of the
image or pixels can be removed to decrease the image size or remove
blank space to improve the image quality; layering which allows you to
better blend the parts of a product in order to increase the quality or
create a better link between the images; focused area cropping in which
the image can be focused on and highlighted in order to extract a set part
of the image that you wish to use, usually removing blank space;
colour/vibrancy adjustments allow you to change the brightness, literal
colour, saturation and boldness of a colour in order to provide a different
message or use in layering to better highlight the most important image
and copy merge that can be used with copy and paste to copy a selected
area of images in order to copy and paste a mixture of images to make a
product.
