Crust
T h e c r u s t is the thin, solid, outermost layer of the Earth. The
crust is thinnest beneath the oceans, averaging only 5
k i l o m e t e r s thick, and thickest beneath large mountain ranges.
Continental crust (the crust that makes up the continents, of
c o u r s e ! ) i s m u c h m ore variable in thickness but averages about
3 0 - 35 k m . Beneath large mountain ranges, such as the
Himalayas the crust reaches a thickness of up to 100 km.
Mantle
The layer below the crust is the mantle . The mantle has more
iron and magnesium than the cru st, making it more dense. The
uppermost part of the mantle is solid and, along with the
c r u s t , f o r m s t h e l i t h o s p h e r e . The rocky lithosphere is brittle
and can fracture. This is the zone where earthquakes occur.
I t s t h e l i t h o s p h e r e t h a t b r e a k s i n t o t h e t h ick, moving slabs of

Plate Movement
Geologists study how tectonic plates move relative to a fixed
spot in the earths mantle and how they move relative to each
other. The first type of motion is called absolute motion, and it
can lead to strings of volcanoes. The second kind of motion,
called relative motion, leads to different types of boundaries
between plates: plates moving apart from one another form a
divergent boundary, plates moving toward one another form a
convergent boundary, and plates that slide along one another
form a transform plate boundary. In rare instances, three
plates may meet in one place, forming a triple junction.
Current plate movement is making the Pacific Ocean smaller,
the Atlantic Ocean larger, and the Himalayan mountains taller.
Measuring Earthquakes
The vibrations produced by earthquakes are detected,
recorded, and measured by instruments call seismographs. The
zigzag line made by a seismograph, called a "seismogram,"
reflects the changing intensity of the vibrations by responding
to the motion of the ground surface beneath the instrument.
From the data expressed in seismograms, scientists can
determine the time, the epicenter, the focal depth, and the
type of faulting of an earthquake and can estimate how much
energy was released
The two general types of vibrations produced by earthquakes
are surfac e w a v e s , w h i c h t r a v e l a l o n g t h e E a r t h ' s s u r f a c e , a n d
body waves, which travel through the Earth. Surface waves
usually have the strongest vibrations and probably cause most
of the damage done by earthquakes.
Body waves are of two types, compressional a n d shear . Both
types pass through the Earth's interior from the focus of an
earthquake to distant points on the surface, but only
compressional waves travel through the Earth's molten core.
Because compressional waves travel at great speeds and
ordinarily rea c h t h e s u r f a c e f i r s t , t h e y a r e o f t e n c a l l e d
"primary waves" or simply "P" waves. P waves push tiny
particles of Earth material directly ahead of them or displace
the particles directly behind their line of travel.
Shear waves do not travel as rapidly through the Earth's
crust and mantle as do compressional waves, and because
they ordinarily reach the surface later; they are called
"secondary" or "S" waves. Instead of affecting material directly
behind or ahead of their line of travel, shear waves displac e
material at right angles to their path and therefore
sometimes called "transverse" waves.
The severity of an earthquake can be expressed in several
w a y s . T h e magnitude of an earthquake, usually expressed by
t h e Richter scale , is a measure of the amplitude of the seismic
waves. The Richter scale, named after D r . C h a r l e s F . R i c h t e r

Predicting Earthquakes
The goal of earthquake prediction is t o give warning of
potentially damaging earthquakes early enough to allow
appropriate response to the disaster, enabling people to
minimize loss of life and property. Ultimately, scientists would
like to be able to specify a high probability for a specific
earthquake on a particular fault within a particular year.
Scientists estimate earthquake probabilities in two ways: by
studying the history of large earthquakes in a specific area
and the rate at which strain accumulates in the rock.
S c i e n t i f i c u n d e r s t anding of earthquakes is of vital importance
to the Nation. As the population increases, expanding urban
development and construction works encroach upon areas
susceptible to earthquakes. With a greater understanding of
t h e c a u s e s a n d e f f e c t s o f e a r t h q u a k e s , we may be able to
reduce damage and loss of life from this destructive
phenomenon.

T h i s p l a n e t a l w a y s g i v e s a m eaning of unpredictability,
changeability. This has been thus related to Aquarius. In
transit it could completely change the order we are used to
different path, which can never predict or think of. Mainly, the
aspects and conjunctions of Uranus initiate ea r t h q u a k e s .
Pluto
Pluto is the planet farthest from the sun. This energy may be
subtle, but its results will hit us like a ton of bricks. This planet
i s a b o u t , t r a n s f o r m a t i o n s , r e - generation, rebirth. It loves to
destroy. This planet rules destruction, de ath, obsession etc.
No one can deny Plutos power and intensity. Its energy is
often focused on the masses. Pluto is the intimator of
mortality. It has been related to the sign of Scorpio and
marked for the transformation.
Aspects
Aspects between planets can induce huge destructions when
aspecting planets are malefic the intensity will be too much evil
or bad. When the aspecting planets are one malefic and other
is a natural benefic then the effect is seen to be moderate.
Opposition that is 180 degrees or at 90 degrees distance
between two malefics such as mars and Saturn is considered
to be bad. The 45- degree distance is also considered to be
malefic. Aspects of lords of 6,8,12 houses are always evil.
Planetary Conjunctions
A planet needs the help of other planet, in creating a huge
change or difference in mundane astrology. When the planets
a r e m ale f ic an d in c on j unction with each other the effect t h e y
create will depend according to the sign in which they are
placed. It is the conjunction between two natural powers like

Retrogation
The retrogation of the planets show a marked influence on the
e v e n t s t u d y . T h e n u m b e r o f p l a n e t s i n retrogation is also of
importance. More the number greater the effect.

Earthquakes are most numerous about at the time of new and

When the orbit of the moon is in a particularly close relation
to the epic enters of earthquake sources, the strain on the
earth at that point is at its maximum and therefore the crust
of the earth is likely to break, producing an earthquake.

METHOD APPLIED
For the analysis of the charts, the following are considered
1 . Raasi chart is taken (using Lahari Ayanamsa)
2. N a v a m s a
3. Strengths (shadbala)
4. Yoga of the day, planetary avasthas.
5. Planets Uranus, Pluto, Neptune are taken
Raasi charts are laid down using Lahari Ayanamsa. Longitudes
of planets a n d t h e i r r e l a t e d i n f o r m a t i o n a r e t a k e n . T h e
Navamsa, which is a vital divisional chart, is taken. The
Navamsa gains its importance next to Raasi chart. Here in
this issue of natural calamities it has been laid down to know
t h e s t r e n g t h o f p l a n e t s s u c h as a r e t h e y i n e x a l t e d p o s i t i o n o r
vargottama situation. In mundane astrology first house shows
the people or population of the place. Planetary avasthas like
the planet is posited in his own house, exalted, debilitated,
e n e m y p l a c e , f r i e n d l y p l a c e , o r i n retrogation or vargottama
etc were considered.
Strength of Planets
Assessing the strength of planets in a mathematical form is
essential and is in wide use in general astrology. In the event
study, these factors were taken for evaluating the strengths
of t h e p l a n e t s . T h e s t r e n g t h o f t h e p l a n e t s i s t o b e s t u d i e d t o
estimate the effect they produce. Shadbala on which we can
rely for the assessment of strength of planets at a basic level
is taken. It has been taken here in total Rupas. The minimum
r e q u i r e m e n ts of the bala for every planet in Rupas to decide
that they are of average strength are as follows:

O B S E R V A T I O N S
1 . Eclipses were considered as arishta so these especially
l u n ar eclipses induce earthquakes to the maximum effect.
2. P r o p e r t y l o s s c a n b e s t u d i e d f r o m J u p i t e r a n d S a t u r n
relations
3. Heart shaking most miserable mass deaths can be
studied from Saturn, Moon combination.
4. The maudhya or the period of combustion induces thes e
type events. Especially dangerous to the lagnas for which
Jupiter and Venus are First rated yoga karakas (Cancer,
Leo, Aquarius, Capricorn etc) and to the places influenced
by these lagnas,
5. Most worst earthquakes can be experienced when
a. Lagna or lagna l ord were aspected by Saturn.
Especially Middle of Lagna is most prone to
Earthquakes as the Bhava chakra will also be same.
If the Lagna is in starting or ending of a sign the
influence of other signs will be felt. Here there wont
be any such chance.
b. G r e atest mutation and Saturn Ketu combinations.
This is because Saturn is the significator of Bhoomi
v i c h h a n n a ( s e p a r a t i o n o f e a r t h- Mars who is the
dreadful enemy of Saturn is called as Bhoomi Putra)
c . Mars and Moon relations (Full moon days)
d. New moon days are also responsible
e . When planets are just changing their rasi, and their
motion direct to retrograde or vice versa.
f. Volcanoes will also induce earthquakes.
6. Kurma chakra can be used for finding Kshethra lagna or
lagna of the place. The social, physical and econ omical
conditions also signify the place some people are using the
independence charts (The charts laid down when a country
got independence like pattabhisheka or sitting in the
throne.) and Directions also show a clue. By the above
factors India can be as signed by Capricorn and Taurus
(independence day chart)
7. Earthquakes occur in the places around water bodies
8. Earthquakes also occur in the water bodies it self and
their impact can be felt upto 10 days or so.
9. Some of the major seismic zones are Japan, Arabi an Sea,
and Mountain regions, Himalayas etc. Southern India,
Rajasthan etc.
C O N C L U S I O N S
Predicting earthquakes in advance with the maximum accuracy
should be worked out. It should be like giving a weather report.
W a r n i n g s h o u l d b e g i v e n w e ll i n a d v a n c e t o l e s s e n t h e e f f e c t .
These all should be done using Cosmological, Philosophical,
Metaphysical, Geographical and Geological knowledge along with
the help of divine Astrological knowledge.
Take more precautions in earthquake prone areas as to see
t h e c o n s tru c tion of th e buildings according to perfect va s t h u ,
in a way immune to seismic disturbances. Government should
take care in those areas where earthquakes occur frequently
and spread the knowledge of earthquakes to one and all.
Some of the o b s e r v a t i o n s c o n c l u d e d f r o m t h e s e c h a r t s a r e a s
follows:
1 . Earthquakes were caused by the action of eclipses.
2. Four or more planets were in conjunction that too in
malefic houses or signs owned by natural malefic.
3. Planets in Retrograde, more the number more the effect.
Or changing their direction, from direct to retrograde or
retrograde to direct.
4. Influence of Saturn was seen in all the charts
5. Planets just changed their sign. Planets in Zero Degree.
6. Planets in square to each other are also showing their
e f f e c t especially when they are malefic.
7. M o s t l y R a h u Ketu are in fixed or fiery signs
8. S a t u r n a n d K e t u c o m b i n a t i o n s , g r e a t e s t m u t a t i o n s w e r e
responsible for worse earthquakes.
9. Benefic aspect to lagna and lagna lord saved the lives of
people.
1 0 . Subha karthari yoga for lagna also proved positive
11. The intensity was much when there was no help from
friendly planets and enemies were showing the effect
1 2 . The effect of exalted planets was positive only in the case
of Saturn and lagna lord and in one case Jupiter also.
G ov e r n me n t s h ou ld prepare the people with the knowled g e o f
seismology and with the help of Astrology the havoc of natural
calamities can be lessened.
Finally it is only the supreme divine, who can predict with
certainty and what has been foresaid is indeed again a divine
enactment.
What
we
conclude
is
only
a
miniscule
of
understanding of our ignorance of supreme divine design. All
our attempts are like trying to show a candle to sunlight. I
fully understand and surrender to thee.

PREVENTIVE MEASURES
W h at to Do Before an Earthquake
1. Make sure you have a fire extinguisher, first aid kit, a
battery- powered radio, a flashlight, and extra batteries
at home.
2. Learn first aid.
3. Learn how to turn off the gas, water, and electricity.
4. Make up a plan of where to meet your family after an
earthquake.
5. Don't leave heavy objects on shelves (they'll fall during a
quake).
6. Anchor heavy furniture, cupboards, and appliances to the
walls or floor.
7. Learn the earthquake plan at your school or workplace.
What to Do During an Earthquake
1 . S t a y c a l m ! If you're indoors, stay inside. If you're outside,
stay outside.
2. If you're indoors, stand against a wall near the center of
the building, stand in a doorway, or crawl under heavy
furniture (a desk or table). Stay away from window s and
outside doors.
3. If you're outdoors, stay in the open away from power lines
or anything that might fall. Stay away from buildings
(stuff might fall off the building or the building could fall
on you).
4. Don't use matches, candles, or any flame. Broken gas
lines and fire don't mix.
5. If you're in a car, stop the car and stay inside the car
until the earthquake stops.
6. Don't use elevators (they'll probably get stuck anyway).
What to Do After an Earthquake
1. Check yourself and others for injuries. Provide first aid
for anyone who needs it.
2. C h e c k w a t e r , g a s , a n d e l e c t r i c l i n e s f o r d a m a g e . I f a n y a r e
damaged, shut off the valves. Check for the smell of gas.
If you smell it, open all the windows and doors, leave
immediately, and report it to the authorities (use
someone else's phone).
3. Turn on the radio. Don't use the phone unless it's an
emergency.
4. Stay out of damaged buildings.
5. Be careful around broken glass and debris. Wear boots or
sturdy shoes to keep from cutting your feet.
6. Be careful of chimneys (they may fall on you).
7. Stay
away
from
beaches.
Tsunamis
and
seiches
sometimes hit after the ground has stopped shaking.
8. Stay away from damaged areas.

Accelerograph :
A seismograph whose output is proportional to ground
acceleration (in comparison to the usual seismograph whose
output is proportional to ground velocity). Accelerographs are
typically used as instruments designed to record very strong
ground motion useful in engineering design; seismographs
commonly record off scale in these circumstances. Normally,
strong motion instruments do not record unless triggered by
strong ground motion.
Crust:
The Earth's outermost layer.
Earthquake:
Shaking of the Earth caused by a sudden movement of rock
beneath its surface.
The release of stored elastic energy caused by sudden
fracture and movement of rocks inside the Earth. Part of the
e n e r g y r e l e a s e d p r o d u c e s s e i s m i c w a v e s, like P, S, and surface
waves that travel outward in all directions from the point of
initial rupture. These waves shake the ground as they pass by.
An earthquake is felt if the shaking is strong enough to cause
ground
accelerations
exceeding
approximatel y
1.0
centimeter/second squared.
Epicenter:
That point on the Earth's surface directly above the
hypocenter of an earthquake. The location on the surface of
the Earth directly above the focus, or place where an
e a r t h q u a k e o r i g i n a t e s . A n e a r t h q u a k e c a u s e d by a fault that
offsets features on the Earth's surface may have an epicenter
that does not lie on the trace of that fault on the surface.
This occurs if the fault plane is not vertical and the
earthquake occurs below the Earth's surface.
Fault:
A b r e ak in the Earth along which movement occurs. Sudden
movement along a fault produces earthquakes. Slow movement
produces aseismic creep.
Focus:
That point within the Earth from which originates the first
motion of an earthquake and its elastic waves.
Magn i t u d e :
A quantity characteristic of the total energy released by an
earthquake, as contrasted with intensity, which describes its

Tectonic earthquakes:
A l t hough all earthquakes associated with active volcanoes are
ultimately related to volcanic processes, Volcanic earthquakes
are directly associated with magma movement, while tectonic
earthquakes occur in zones separated from the principal areas
of magma mov e m e n t .
Tsunami:
A tsunami is a series of very long wavelength ocean waves
caused by the sudden displacement of water by earthquakes,
landslides, or submarine slumps. Ordinarily, tsunamis are
produced only by earthquakes exceeding magnitude 7.5. In the
open ocean, tsunami waves travel at speeds of 600- 800
kilometers per hour, but their wave heights are usually only a
