This specification has been prepared by the Stores Standardisation Sub
Committee on the authority of Standardisation Committee, Ministry of Defence.

SCOPE
1.1
This specification covers the requirements and methods of test for Protective;
PX-7 intended to be used as a general services preservative as an ingredient of certain
other preservatives.

3.1
The indentor shall clearly indicate in the order the type and size of the
container in which the Protective, PX-7 is required to be supplied.
4.
MATERIAL
4.1
Protective, PX-7 will be manufactured from soft petroleum jelly so as to
conform the qualitative requirement as specified in clause 6 of this JSS. Protective, PX-7
shall be smooth, homogeneous paste, free from lumps, visible water impurities and
separation of oil.
5.1
Manufacturers / Contractors must satisfy themselves that the stores are in
accordance with the terms of the contract and fully conform to the required specification,
by carrying out a thorough pre-inspection of each lot before actually tendering the same
for inspection to the Quality Assurance Officer nominated under the terms of the
contract. A declaration by the contractor that a necessary pre-inspection has been carried
out on the stores tendered, will be submitted alongwith the challan. The declaration will
also indicate the methods followed in carrying out pre-inspection showing the features
checked / tested and will have the test certificate attached to the challan / declaration.
5.2
If the Quality Assurance Officer finds that the pre-inspection of the
consignment as required above has not been carried out, the consignment is liable for
rejection.
5.3
Quality Assurance Authority reserves the right to draw sample and test the
product at any time during the procurement.
5.4
Sampling
5.4.1
Sampling plan and procedure for inspection of material stores shall be as per
specification No. IND/SL/8900(a).
6.

6.1
Samples taken from any portion of the consignment, shall show that the
material conforms to the following requirements when tested in accordance with the

Note: Unless otherwise stated, analytical grade reagent and distilled water
conforming to IS 1070 shall be used in all testing operations.
6.2
If on examination of any sample from any portion of a consignment, the
material is found to be not fully in accordance with this specification, the whole
consignment may be rejected.
6.3
Quality Assurance Authority reserves the right to draw the sample and test the
product at any time during the procurement.
7.
WARRANTY
7.1
The stores supplied against this specification shall be deemed to bear the
warranty of the contractor against defective materials, and performance for a period of 48
months
from the date of receipt of the stores at consignees depot. If during this
period, the stores supplied are found to be so defective, the same shall be replaced
immediately with the serviceable stores by the contractor at site, free of any charges or
cost.
8.
PACKAGING
8.1
The packing material for Protective PX-7 shall conform to the following: Material

8.2.1
Mode - The Protective PX-7 shall be supplied in clean, dry, rust free and
leakproof containers as required. Each containers shall contain the same net mass of the
material i.e. 2 kg, 5 kg, 10 kg, 25 kg or 50 kg. After filling the containers (2 kg, 5 kg and
10 kg) the lids shall be fitted and spot soldered at four points diagonally opposite to each
other. 10 such filled 2 kg containers or four 5 kg containers or two 10 kg. Containers
shall then be packed in a corrugated fibre board box and opening closed with pressure
sensitive adhesive tape with plastic base conforming to IS 13262- 92. The box shall be
provided with liner. All empty space shall be filled with suitable cushioning material to
prevent damage during transit.
8.2.2
The corrugated fibre board boxes shall be strapped with polypropylene strap
of 0.5 mm thickness & 12 mm wide conforming to JSS 8135-10 minimum at two places
on long side.
8.2.3

Responsibility
In F.O.R & Local contracts, the packing and marking and dispatch of the
inspected material shall be done by the contractor.

SCOPE
A.1.1
This method describes a procedure for determining the volatile matter content
of petroleum materials.
A.2
OUTLINE OF METHOD
A.2.1
A sample of the material is heated at 100 C for a period of six hours and the
percentage loss in mass is calculated.

A.4.1
Dry the glass dish in the oven at 100 C 1 C cool in desiccators and reweigh to the nearest 1 mg.

Into the dish put approximately 20 g of the product, and re-weigh to the
nearest 1 mg.
