APPENDIX A
A.

METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF VOLATILE MATTER

A.1

SCOPE

A.1.1
This method describes a procedure for determining the volatile matter content
of petroleum materials.
A.2

OUTLINE OF METHOD

A.2.1
A sample of the material is heated at 100 C for a period of six hours and the
percentage loss in mass is calculated.
A.3

APPARATUS

A.3.1

Glass dish, flatbottomed, approximately, 90 mm diameter.

A.3.2

Air oven controlled at 100 C 1 C

A.4

PROCEDURE

A.4.1
Dry the glass dish in the oven at 100 C 1 C cool in desiccators and reweigh to the nearest 1 mg.
A.4.2
Into the dish put approximately 20 g of the product, and re-weigh to the
nearest 1 mg.
A.4.3
hours.

Place the dish and contents in the oven and maintain at 100 C 1 C for 6

A.4.4
At the end of the test period remove the dish and content from the oven, cool
in a desiccator and re-weigh to the nearest 1 mg.
A.5

CALCULATION AND REPORTING

A.5.1
Calculate the loss in mass to the nearest 0.01 per cent of the original samples.
Report this result as the volatile matter of the material.
