Equipment Calibration :

Chemical Spot Testing:

The person(s)performing the PMI testing

shouldcalibrateand/or verify the test
equipmentperformanceas specifiedby the
equipmentmanufacturer.The PMI test
procedureshouldprovide the frequency
intervalfor this calibration/verification. If
calibrationproceduresare not provided by
the equipmentmanufacturer,they should be
estabiished
by the owner/user.Typically,
theseproceduresshould inciude

Resistivity Testing:
The principle employed in the test method is
known as the Seebeck Effect, or
thermoelectricprinciple. A heatedjunction
clf dissimilar nretal is createclwhen the
heated probe (300 Deg. F) and the metal
being tested are in contact with each other.
the voltage generated at this junction is
representative of the chemistry and
crystallinestructureof the metalbeing tested.
Every alloy of a given crystalline structure
will generatethe same voltage regardlessof
the geometryor size of the piecebeing tested
or the pressureapplied. By ref'erenceto
known standards, these lnstruments are
capable of sorting and identifying a wide
range of ferrous and nonferrousmaterials,.
Alloy sorters have not proved to be
consistently capable of sorting low alloy
(<5VoCr) and austeniticstainlesssteels.
Other l'echniques:

ffit

Techniques such as eddy-currentsorters,

electromagnetic alloy sorters, triboelectric
testing devices (e.g. fenet meters), and
thermoelectrictest are qualitativeand as such
may only appropriate for limited sorting
applications and
not
for
specific
identification.

PersonnelQualifications:
The person(s)performing PMI test should be
knowledgeable
aboutall aspectsof operation
of the PMI testequipmerltand the PMI test
methodused. Qualificationsof the person
performingthe PMI test, including training
and experience,should be submittedfor
review and approval by the owner/user.
