Chapter 11 Hand Signals


11.1

GENERAL

Marshalling signals assist the Captain in maintaining safe and clear


passage of aircraft during taxi and ramp operations.
Marshallers must use wands.
Lighted wands are required
from dusk until dawn and
during periods of low
visibility.

NOTE

The proper signal must not be altered at any time. The marshaller is
responsible for the aircraft movement on the ramp and must ensure that
these signals are given in a clear, consistent, and concise manner.

11.2

Wing Walker(s) shall be used when


necessary as local conditions
warrant such as in a confined or
congested area.

HAND SIGNALS
The IATA Hand Signals on the following pages are the Companys
standard ramp taxi signals as approved by Flight, Maintenance, and
Customer Service departments. Pilots shall remain familiar with these
signals.

Hold Position

x Fully extend arms and wands downwards at a 45 angle to sides.


- Indication to hold at the current position until the next maneuver.

Stop

x Hold the wands crossed so no movement is allowed.


- Indication to stop until all personnel & equipment are clear from aircraft.

Start Engine

Note: The Flight Crew acknowledges the all clear by flashing the taxi light once during
dispatch of the aircraft (dispatch is complete). The Flight Crew will continue to taxi the
aircraft until the stop signal is provided during receipt of the aircraft.

Raise right arm to head level with wand pointing up and move the wand in a
circular motion.
Raise left arm to head level and point to engine to start.
- The Flight Crew will indicate a request to start engine.
- The Marshaller will ensure clearance prior to responding.
- Indication that area is clear for engine start.
- Location of engine being started.
Note: When wands are not used the appropriate number of fingers that correspond
to the engine being started should be displayed (see inset figure).

Stop Engines

x Extend arm with hand or wand forward of body at shoulder level.

AIRCRAFT RESCUE AND FIRE FIGHTING SIGNALS


Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighters use the following signals when
electronic communications cannot be maintained.

EVACUATE
Execute beckoning arm motion.
Non-beckoning arm held against body.

STOP
Halt evacuation in progress. Stop aircraft
movement or other activity in progress.
Arms in front of head; crossed at wrists.

EMERGENCY CONTAINED
All Clear No outside evidence
of dangerous conditions.
Arms extended outward at a 45
degree angle. Move arms inward
below waistline simultaneously
until crossed, then extend outward.
(Umpires safe signal).

CODESHARE SPECIFIC HAND SIGNALS


Codeshare partners of Republic Airlines may use slightly different hand
signals than the generic ones contained within this chapter. For a listing
of hand signals specific to a codeshare, reference the appropriate
codeshare appendix of the FOM.
