Topics for 9th Grade/ New Student Orientation

Teachers: Please discuss the following topics according to the schedule. Thank you.

R1

RED DAYS AND WHITE DAYS: Look at your schedule. You will notice the oddnumbered classes are in the R column and even-numbered classes are in the W
column. There is a column with the letter A. You can ignore the A column. We will
start school on a RED day. Please make sure you have a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 on
your schedule. If you do not have all 8 classes please raise your hand now and let me
know
(Teachers, please write down the students names and the class (es) they
are missing and let Jen Crump-Strawderman know).
HALL PASSES AGENDA BOOKS: You will need a signed agenda book to be in the
halls during class time. Your locker and bathroom visits should take place before
school or between classes. You will be given an agenda book during W4 one of the
first few weeks of school.

R3

CELL PHONE AND HEADPHONE POLICY: Students have unlimited use of their
devices in the cafeteria and in the hallways. They can use their devices in the
classroom or library only with the teachers permission. Students cannot use their
devices in any testing situation. Calls, videos, and pictures are always in violation
without permission.
Multiple confiscations will result in suspension of device
privileges.

DRESS CODE: Student attire is primarily a matter of personal preference and family
guidelines. However, students' dress may not be disruptive, unsafe, and obscene or
promote alcohol, drug or gang involvement. Dress that is disruptive to the educational
process is not permitted. Students whose style of dress is inappropriate for school will
be subject to consequences. You must follow the following dress code guidelines in
order to be allowed to remain in class:
Girls need to wear tops with straps that are at least two inches in width.
Boys can not wear tank tops or muscle shirts
Clothing must cover your midsection
Shoes must be worn at all times in school
You cannot wear:
Tube tops or tops without straps unless a blouse or shirt is worn over it
Clothing that exposes bare midriffs
Clothing that exposes your rib cage
Clothing that exposes your cleavage or other private parts
Skirts or shorts that are shorter than 4 inches above the knee
Sagging or low-cut pants
Clothing with studs or chain belts

W4

LATE BUS DAY: You are encouraged to stay after school to participate in activities
and meet with your teachers. In order to ride the late bus, you will need a hall pass
signed by the teacher or activity sponsor. You are to report to the cafeteria with that
hall pass. Once you are in the cafeteria students will be issued a Late Bus Pass. All
Late Bus Passes will be distributed in the cafeteria. The late bus day will be
Wednesdays.
The late buses board at 4:00pm outside the cafeteria. The late bus drop-off stops will
be similar as the bus stops for todays orientation. Late buses start on September 28 th.
You will soon hear more information about late buses during the morning
announcements.

W4 and PRIDE Time: Welcome to your W4 class! We will be together as a group for
the next 4 years.
W4 is a 25 minute block every WHITE where students will report here. During this
time, administrative tasks and school wide activities will be done.
Study Hall: Students will have the opportunity to complete academic work
during Learning Seminar.
Reflections and Academic Check-In: When grades are distributed, students

will have the opportunity to review grades and reflect on areas for improvement.
A-Blast Distribution: Students and teachers will read the A-Blast.

Following W4, you will report to PRIDE Time. PRIDE Time is designed to improve your
academic achievement and learning by providing opportunities during the school day
to get help. PRIDE Time meets every other day. Teachers will request students for
PRIDE TIME to provide academic support. If you feel you need additional help/support
from a class, ask your teacher if they can request you for PRIDE Time.
The W4 period is 25 minutes and the PRIDE Time period is 60 minutes.

W6

CLINIC: If you become ill at school, ask your teacher for a clinic pass. If you need to
go home, the clinic staff will arrange for your parent or guardian to check you out of
school. Students may not arrange for their own check-outs.
STUDENT SERVICES OFFICE: Your counselors name is in the top right corner of
your schedule. If you need to see your counselor, sign your full name on the clipboard
on the counselors door. The counselor will send a pass to your class. Sign up before
school, during lunch, or after school. Between classes is not a good time to sign up to
see your counselor; usually this will make you late to class and the counselor will not
give you a late pass.
LIBRARY: The library will be open to students before school, during lunch, and after
school. The hours are 7:30-3:30. To visit the library during lunch, you must get a pass
from your R5 or W6 teacher, or from the administrator in the cafeteria.
After school passes are required on late bus days. Be sure to get one from the teacher
with whom you stayed. Soon you will visit the library with your English class for an
orientation about how to use the resources of the library at AHS.
CAREER CENTER: The Career Center is part of the Student Services office and is
your source for college and career information. You may visit the Career Center during
lunch, during PRIDE Time or after school.

W8

ATTENDANCE: Good attendance is essential for school achievement. To encourage

you to attend class regularly and on time, Annandale enforces a strict attendance
policy. If you arrive more than 20 minutes late for class without a pass, you will be
given an unexcused absence. Teachers will not allow you to make up work or make up
a test if you have an unexcused absence from that day.
If you arrive after 8:30 in the morning, you must visit the attendance office and get a
pass before going to your first class.
If you must be absent, have your parent or guardian call or email the attendance
office or write a note within three days of the absence. If no call or note has been
received in three days, the absence will be considered unexcused.
Family trips and vacations are not excused absences.
Students with excessive attendance/truancy issues, doctors note/official
documentation is required to excuse any future absences. Any future absences
without proper documentation will become unexcused. This includes check-outs
from the clinic.
Students must be in school the entire day to be eligible to participate in any

student activity scheduled on that day. Exceptions to this standard may be

made with the prior approval of the principal or her/his designee.
