Capsule Hotels
How small can your hotel room be?
If you are staying in a certain type of a hotel in Japan, then the answer could be just one
metre by one metre by two metres. These hotels are mainly intended for businessmen who miss
the last train home. Instead of paying for an expensive taxi ride, Japanese businessmen can rent a
capsule, a kind of plastic box to sleep in, for around four or five thousand yen.
There are no reservations and no long-term stays. Guests can check in at any time after
about 4pm. At reception they are shown to a room with lockers where they deposit their clothes
and their belongings. In return, they receive a cotton bathrobe and slippers to wear. Then guests
go to their rooms, rows of capsules on each floor stacked about three storeyes high. Each one
is equipped with a mattress, a pillow, and a quilt. There is also a light, clock, mirror and a TV
hanging from the ceiling. At the end of the capsule is a small curtain which you can close to
separate your space from all the other men sleeping in the same area. Check out time is around 9
oclock the next day.
Many capsule hotels offer a large number of services. There are vending machines which
sell soft drinks and variety of snacks. Some even sell clean socks and underwear. Each floor has
a shared toilet with lots of toothbrushes, razors and shaving equipment. There are also coinoperated showers. The more expensive hotels also have restaurants and health spas with baths,
saunas, and a massage service.
Although the capsules have been called names such as dog kennels or coffins, they
are surprisingly comfortable. The biggest problem is noise pollution. So its best to bring your
own earplugs!

Over the years, destruction to the Great Barrier Reef has been blamed (11)
tourists and divers who took pieces of coral as souvenirs and damaged the coral by standing on
it. Today many conservationists are involved (12).. trying to stop further destruction.
One of their measures is that they insist (13) keeping tourists away from many parts
of the reef in order to protect it (14) further damage.
A dedicated team of conservationists who believe (15) changing the world
and looking after our environment have had a success story. In 1997, the total number of rhinos
in the wild consisted (16) 8,000 white rhinos and 2,500 black rhinos. Today there are
more than 14,000 white rhinos and nearly 4,000 black rhinos. Now conservationists are hoping
(17) similar successes with other endangered animals. If you want to learn (18)
. these projects take a look at the WWF website. Its a great place to start.

TomGreen,

I live in Manchester. I like my city very much but sometimes the people here are
not very friendly and they dont try to keep our city clean and beautiful. And do
you enjoy living in a small town? How do you spend your spare time there?
Anyway, Im thinking of travelling to Russia next summer. Could you tell me what
weather to expect?

Can you believe that I didnt even have an email
address before I started my latest job a few months
ago? I suppose Im suspicious of technology in
general and Ive never owned a computer. Now
that Ive got email at work, Im just starting to get a
few personal emails from friends that Ive given my
address to. I really dont like it when I get a message
thats been copied to lots of other friends it seems
as if theyre saying this is important information,
but I cant be bothered to contact you all personally.
Its like sending a photocopied letter to lots of
different friends at the same time who would ever
do that? Sure, it would be easier but so impersonal.
2
Sending text messages can be really addictive
especially if, like me, you always want to have the
last word. Now that we use text, my friends and I
hardly ever send emails to each other. Whats the
point? They just sit there, waiting for you to access
your email account. Text messages are instant, and
you can receive them anywhere. They arent too
expensive either mind you, if you send enough
messages, the bill really starts to add up. I reckon I
spent about on my mobile last month, and only
about 0f that was on voice calls. The rest went on
text messages.
3
I know it isnt fashionable these days, but I really
like sending letters. Emails are great for work, or for
keeping in touch with people, but they dont have the
same personal feel as letters. Which would you
rather receive: a love letter or a love email? If you
get a letter, you know that somebody has taken the
trouble to write it by hand, address the envelope, buy
a stamp and then post it. You can type a quick email
in a few seconds and click send without any effort
at all. These days, most people never write anything
linger than a postcard and youre lucky if you get
one of those rather than just a text message saying
Im on holiday.
4
I like to visit chat rooms whenever Im on the
Internet. Its a great way to find people who have
similar tastes in music and who want to swap tracks.
I tend to come across the same people quite often,
and I suppose I think of them as my friends now,
even though weve never actually met face to face.
And in some ways, Im more open and honest in a
chat room than I am when, for example, I send an
email. I reckon its easier to really be yourself when
you dont know the other person, and you dont have
to worry about what theyll think of you. So
whatever Im worried about, I share it with other
people in that chat room. Its reassuring.
5
I used to send a lot of text messages, but recently,
Ive completely switched to instant messaging. My
friends and I have all got the same software on our
mobiles, and it lets us swap messages with each

other instantly, and not just two people at once$ three

or four of us can all take part in the same
conversation. Whenever I have to use text messages
now if I want to get in touch with somebody who
hasnt got the instant messaging software it seems
so slow! I dont know how we used to put up with it!
Maybe something even faster than instant messaging
will come along soon, and then the software weve
got now will seem really old-fashioned.
