1. Abduction
: The movement of a limb away from the midline of the body.
2. Adaptive/Assistive Equipment
: An appliance or gadget which assists users in the
operation of self-care, work or leisure activities.
3. Apraxia
: Inability to carry out a complex or skilled movement due to deficiencies
in cognition.
4. Activity
: Generally the smallest unit of work identified in a work plan or care plan.
5. Affected Side : Also called the weak side, weaker or involved side.
6. Audiologist/Audiology
: Healthcare professionals specializing in the measurement
of hearing and the correction of hearing impairment or hearing loss.
7. Aseptic
: Preventing infection.
8. Backache
: A pain or soreness along the spinal cord in the back.
9. Bed Sores

: See pressure ulcers.

10. Bedfast

: To be bedridden.

11. Bleeding
: The loss of blood from the body.
12. Blindness
: The state of being blind or lacking sight.
13. Brachial Pulse : Pulse obtained from inside the elbow on the little finger side.
14. Breathing
: The bodily process of inhalation and exhalation.
15. Caregiver
: Any individual who takes care of an elderly person or someone with
physical or mental limitations.
16. Comatose
: Used to describe the condition of patient in coma. Sometimes the word
unconscious is used.
17. Case Mix
: A formulative method used to determine patients' needs for health care
resources within a nursing facility
18. Co-morbidities: Multiple disease processes.
19. Coryza
: Watery drainage from the nose.
20. Dehydration : When the body does not have as much water and fluids as it should.
21. Demeanor
: The way in which a person behaves.
22. Dentures
: An artificial set of replacement teeth for any teeth that are missing.
23. Disability
: The limitation of normal physical, mental, social activity of an
individual.

30. Elastic Stockings
: Antiembolitic stockings.
31. Emotional labiality : Crying or laughing without any reason or when it is
inappropriate.
32. Empathy
: Feeling of concern and understanding for another persons condition,
feelings, situation or state of mind.
33. Enteric
: Involving the digestive tract.
34. Faces
: Waste that has been eliminated from the bowels.
35. Femoral pulse : Pulse obtained from the iner side of the groin.
36. Flexed
: Bent, as an arm or limb.
37. G Tube: A tube inserted surgically through an opening in the stomach. G tubes offer
another means of nutritional sustenance for those individuals unable to use their mouths.
38. Healthcare Power of Attorney: The appointment of a healthcare agent to make decisions
when the principal becomes unable to make or communicate decisions.
39. Hospice
: Hospice/palliative care is provided to enhance the life of the dying
person.
40. Immobility
: Incapable of moving or being moved.
41. Indigent care : Health services provided to the poor or those unable to pay.
42. Indirect cost : Cost which cannot be indentified directly with a particular activity,
service or product of the progam experiencing the cost.
43. Infection
: An invasion of an organism by a pathogen such a bacteria or viruses.
44. Memory loss : The complete or partial loss of a persons memory.
45. Mistreatment : The practice of treating someone or something badly.
46. Muscle
: The tissue of the body which primarily functions as a source of power.
47. Nosocomial : Originating or taking place in a hospital.
48. Nosocomial infection : An infection acquired in a hospital.
49. Oral hygiene : Activities that promote good health of the mouth.
50. Personal stress: A persons own mental or physical tension that result from physical,
emotional, or chemical causes.
