ITALIANO

valore acquisito nell'ultima calibrazione.
5.2
Parametri - "PAr"

nessun parametro verranno utilizzati quelli gi presenti in memoria.

della prova premere rispettivamente MEMg, UM%, RS%, nuovamente MEMg e SET TIME.
tempo tramite il tasto SET TIME.
dovuta all'evaporazione di queste sostanze.

ACCESSORI
menzionati possono provocare. In particolare:

CONTROL PANEL
4.1
General features
The control panel of the instrument (Fig. 2) is divided into two main areas: one at the right side, with blue
lines encircling the keys and the display, referring to the balance section and the other at the left side,
with red marks, referring to the oven section.
The display on the balance section may show the weight, the two percent values referring to the weight
loss of the sample, due to the evaporation, and the information messages to the operator, concerning
the balance status.
The oven section displays show the time duration of the measurement (upper), and the oven
temperature (lower).
The keys are of the membrane type; when a key is pressed a beep confirms the operation.
When a key is pressed for more than two seconds, its function is repeated at a rate of two per second
until the key is released.
Certain keys have an indicator lamp on top which confers a different meaning to the display or the key.
The various functions and/or settings of the keys are described below.
4.2
T key (TARE)
The T key sets to zero any numerical value, either positive or negative, which appears on the display, for
the whole weight range up to the maximum capacity.
It also allows to cancel the error messages of the balance (see Appendix 2) and leave to the functions
selected with the MODE key (see also Chapter 5).
26
EuroTherm
ENGLISH
MODE key
Using the MODE key it is possible to select the five functions available to the EUROTHERM and that
appear in sequence on the display every time you press the key. They are:
Function
Description
"CAL"
Calibration
"Par"
Parameters
"iPS"
"SEL"
Selection
"drY"
Dry
Allows you to select how to see the final results of moisture % and
dry residue % (see paragraph 5.5).
The chosen function is confirmed by pressing the key CLRg. Press the key TARE to exit from any
function.
MEMg key
It stores in memory the initial sample weight. Put the sample on the pan and then press the MEMg key;
the display will shows the message "AcPF" to indicate the start of memorization procedure. Do not
press any key before the "AcPF" message.
When the stable weight is acquired the led turns on and the display shows the current weight.
After the initial sample weight has been memorized, subsequent pressures of this key give on the display
alternatively the current weight of the sample or its initial weight (in this latter case the indicating lamps of
keys RS%, UM% and MEMg are switched ON).
When the condition of stable weight is reached (see paragraph 5.3) or if the previously set time has
elapsed, the led of MEMg starts flashing.
To store in memory the initial weight of various samples (max. 5) see paragraph 5.4.
NOTE: the sample weight must have a minimum weight of 140 mg. Below this value, the display shows
the message "ErrU". Press the T key to continue.
RS % key
It allows the visualisation of the dry residue percentage. Pressing the key the led turn on and the display
sows:
- the current value (steady light)
or
- the memorized value (flashing light) if the condition of stable data is reached
or the set time has elapsed.
The visualised value it change if the instrument is working in wet mode or dry mode (see paragraph 5.5).
The least significant digit is replaced by "r" in wet mode or "d" in dry mode.
NOTE: the RS % key is inactive if the initial weight of the sample has not been memorised.
27
EuroTherm
ENGLISH
UM % key
It allows the visualisation of the relative humidity percentage. Pressing the key the led turn on and the
display sows:
- the current value (steady light)
or
- the memorized value (flashing light) if the condition of stable data is reached
or the set time has elapsed.
The visualised value it change if the instrument is working in wet mode or in dry mode (see paragraph
5.5).
The least significant digit is replaced by "u" in wet mode or "h" in dry mode.
NOTE: the UM % key is inactive if the initial weight of the sample has not been memorised.
WARNING
If the percentage calculation give a negative value (in wet mode) or more than 100 value
(in dry mode) due to wrong operation by the operator, the result is still visualised but flashing.
CLRg key
Essentially it performs three functions:
1- Confirm the choice selected with the MODE key (see MODE key).
2- Delete the initial weight memorised, independently of the value showed by the display. This causes:
the cancellation of the test (free memory)
the turn-off of the led of the last pressed key lUM% or RS% or MEMg)
the visualisation on the display of the current weight.
3- Delete the reached condition of stable weight to permit the continuance of the test (see paragraphs
7.1 e 7.2).
4.3
The keys of this section allow the setting of the temperature and of the time required for the test.
The setting keys SETx1, SETx10, SETx100 and CLEAR are operative only during the setting phase of
temperature, of the time and of the parameters for determination of the stable weight condition ("iPS",
see paragraph 5.3).
START-STOP key
Its starts or interrupts the determination.
When it is pressed at the beginning of the determination, the corresponding lamp turns ON with flashing
light and the timer starts the count down. If the preset time is zero the determination starts and proceeds
until the condition of stable weight is reached, either of these events being announced by a continuous
sound.
The sound stops when the key is pressed again. If the key is pressed before the end of the
determination, the measurement is interrupted and the lamp switches OFF.
SET TEMP key
It sets the oven temperature. If pressed when the determination has not started, the light turns ON and
the temperature at which the oven will work is set by means of the keys SETx1, SETx10, SETx100 and
CLEAR.
If the temperature is set to a value above 180, the value goes back to its minimum value i.e. 50C.
Pressing the CLEAR key the temperature is set to zero. In these conditions the oven cools to ambience
temperature.
The preset temperature value becomes operative by pressing again the key SET TEMP or the keys SET
TIME or START STOP.
28
EuroTherm
ENGLISH
After the temperature setting (led of SET TEMP off) and during the test (led of START-STOP flashing)
the display shows the current temperature; pressing again SET TEMP the led tour on and the display will
shows the selected temperature.
During the test (led of START-STOP flashing) is not possible to change the selected temperature.
If the preset temperature is set to zero by means of the CLEAR key or if the temperature actual value is
less than 20C the mark "- - -" appears on the display.
SET TIME key
It allows the preset and control of the timer which limits the duration of the measurement.
If this key is pressed before the beginning of the test, the light turns ON and the timer value (minutes) is
setting by means of the keys SETx1, SETx10, SETx100 and CLEAR. If the preset time exceeds the
maximum value of 999, the timer starts again from zero.
If the preset time is set to zero by means of the CLEAR key the mark "- - -" appears on the display. In
this condition the next test will be executed in "PPS" mode (end of the test when a stable weight is
reached).
In order to exit from the preset phase press again the key SET TIME or any of the keys SET TEMP or
START-STOP. The count down starts as soon as the SET TIME is pressed again.
During the test (START-STOP blinking) is not possible to modify the selected time.
In synthesis: according to the value selected with SET TIME (see also paragraphs 7.1 and 7.2) the test
for the humidity determination of a sample can be executed in two distinguished modalities:
Selected value for
SET TIME
Completed test upon the reached of the stable weight condition ("PPS")
After the set up of the timer the led of SET TIME is OFF and the display shows "- - - or the last value
visualized; pressing again SET TIME (led ON) the display will shows the selected time.
Pressing SET TIME during the test, the led turn ON and the display of the timer shows for 10 seconds:
- the setting time (test with determined time)
or
- the passed time (for "PPS" test).
Successively the led turn OFF and the display will shows:
- the remaining time to complete the test (for the test with determined time)
or
- the message "PPS" (stable weight condition test).
At the end of the test (START-STOP led OFF) the display of the timer will shows "- - -". Pressing SET
TIME the led turn ON and the display of the timer shows:
- the setting time (test with determined time)

THE 5 FUNCTIONS
5.1
Calibration - "CAL"
The calibration is not necessary for the instrument operation. As a check the calibration can be
performed from time to time by using a calibrated mass (50 g or multiples) supplied on request. To
perform this operation proceed as follows:
Press the MODE key until the "CAL" message appears. Confirm by pressing CLRg key.
The message "ACAL" now appears on the display and stays on until the instrument has reached
a stable condition.
At this point the message "LOAD" is displayed. Place on the pan a calibration mass (i. e. 100g).
While the instrument is accepting the weight value the message "CALC" is displayed.
Once the calculating procedure is completed the weight value (in this case "100.000") appears on
the display.
The calibration mass may have the value specified in the general characteristics of the instrument or a
whole multiple of this value within the maximum capacity of the balance. If a wrong mass is used, the
flashing message "ErrC" appears on the display.
This same message is displayed also if no mass is placed on the pan within 10 sec from appearance of
the message "LOAD".
In both cases the operation must be cancelled by pressing the T key. The instrument retains the value of
the last calibration operation.
5.2
Parameters - "PAr"
5.3
As mentioned previously, one of the functions selected by the MODE key is that labelled iPS. With this
function it is possible to set the stable weight conditions. The aim of this procedure is to determine
accurately the end of the evaporation process of the water and volatile substances contained in the
given sample to be tested.

TIME
(min.)
If we examine a typical evaporation process, as entirely represented in fig.3, we can see that the sample
weight, initially assumed as 100, gradually decreases down to a final value which may be considered the
dry residue. The difference between the initial and the final weight, related to the initial weight, is the
humidity content of the sample. It is evident that, even with the same kind of material, it is not possible to
foresee accurately the duration of the process.
It is possible to detect when the evaporation process is completed by determining the condition at which
the weight can be considered stable, i.e. if it does not change by more than a certain amount of
milligrams in a given time. The two values of weight change and time interval during which the change
occurs may be set up.
In order to gain access to the set up menu operate as follow:
press repeatedly the MODE key until the message "iPS" appears on the balance display, than
confirm whit the CLRg key
on the display appears the message "d = xx" where "xx" represents the actual weight change in
milligrams; the default setting is d = 02 (2 milligrams)
using the keys SETx1 and SETx10 set the new value, from a minimum of 0 to a maximum of 99mg
On pressing again the key MODE, the display shows the message "S = m-ss" where "m" and
"ss" represent the actual value of the interval time respectively given in minutes and seconds; the
default setting is S = 1-00 (1 minute - 0 sec.).
Using the keys SETx100 and SETx10 set the new value from a minimum of 10 seconds to a maximum
of 9 minutes and 50 seconds.
Press key T to return in operative mode.
For example:
if we start the test with the function "iPS", using the default setting (d = 02 and S = 1-00), the
evaporation process will be considered finished when, in 1 minute, the weight of the sample will not have
variations more than 2 milligrams.
To change the values of "iPS" during the test, press again the key MODE and repeat the procedure.

This procedure allows to store in memory the initial weights of max. 5 samples and the following
processing. This is particularly useful if one has to make tests on fractions of the same sample,
especially when the sample loses significant percentage of moisture at room temperature.
In addition at the initial weight memorization described above, it is possible to store in memory the data
related to a certain sample. When one proceeds with the test on that sample, it's sufficient to recall those
data.
Press the MODE key until the message "SEL" appears on the display and confirm by pressing the
CLRg key.
The display shows the message "SEL-x", where "x" is a number from 1 to 5. The number
increases by pressing the CLRg key (at the switch on, the instrument goes automatically on
memory 1).
Press the key T to confirm the number of memory and then memorize the initial weight.
Repeat the process to memorize the initial weight of the others samples.
The MEMg key indicator led indicates the condition of the selected memory:
- OFF: this memory is free
- ON (fixed): data are memorized
- ON (flashing): the stable weight condition is reached
To visualize on the display the initial weight memorized of the samples:

The display shows the current weight.
The led of the key can be:
- ON (usage memory)
- OFF (free memory)
The display shows the current weight corresponding to the
selected memory.
The led of MEMg, RS% and UM% are ON
When you are ready to start with a test, it's sufficient to recall the memory related to that sample.
The final data of the test (final weight, RS% and UM%) will be memorized in the same memory and will
remain available until his cancellation.
To cancel data from a memory, it is sufficient to recall this memory and press the CLRg key for more
than 2 seconds.

SAMPLE PREPARATION

General rules

27,150
x 100 = 129,65 %
35,200 27,150
27,150
x 100 = 29,65 %
The first rule to be observed in the preparation of the sample concerns the way which it is placed on the
support or in any container (the pan of EUROTHERM, an aluminium disk, a watch glass, or other).
The sample should be distributed as uniformly as possible, so as to cover the entire area available of the
support or container, and with the greatest possible surface area exposed to the effects of warming.
Doing so we can reduce the time of testing but, above all, we have greater precision, uniformity and
repeatability of results.
If the sample has not been prepared properly, the drying phase may proceed with difficulty, the test
would require more time or even may end before the complete drying of the sample.
6.2
Sample quantity
It is obvious that the amount of sample to be tested has a particular influence for the time of the test but
be aware that:
the minimum weight of the sample is about 140 milligrams
data of tests performed with samples of less than 1 gram is not reproducible
last digit of the dry residue percentage, or of the relative humidity percentage, is significant when
used at least 10 g of sample.
We must also remember that for non-homogeneous substances the quantity of the sample must be
increased so as to ensure the reproducibility of results with samples taken from the same unit.
33

6.3
Particular cases
Samples such as pasta, coffee and cereal grains, or other products of similar structure, if necessary can
be crushed, ground or chopped to speed up the drying process.
For substances with rapid volatilisation (wine, resins, etc..) or low humidity (salt, sugar, PVC, etc..) can
be useful to use the PPE accessory, available on request, which allows the storage of the initial weight of
sample through an additional external pan. For more detailed explanations see paragraph 8.2.
In many cases the use is indicated, with the sample, of purified sand (or quartz). It is designed to
increase the surface of the sample exposed to the heat, which is also distributed in a more rapid and
uniform mode. In addition, if used properly, prevents:
That sample sketches escape from the weighing pan (especially with samples like butter and
margarine)
That on the surface of the sample forming a film impermeable to water (for eg. with glues or
varnishes) which does not allow a complete drying.
Depending on the substance to be tested, the sand must be mixed, placed below the sample or
distributed on the surface of it.
NOTE: on tables in Appendix 3 are some evidence of a general nature, with the indications of the
samples to provide the use of the PPE accessory or of the sand.
WARNING !
The weight of the sample must always be considered net of sand used, which must always be
cleared and deducted as tare.
Be sure that the sand used is completely dry and, as appropriate, proceed to its drying.
7.
A test for the determination of the relative humidity need the following operations:
1.
2.
Set the temperature of the oven (using the key SET TEMP)
Set the modality of the test (using the key SET TIME) that can be:
a) a test to achieve the condition of Weight Stable
b) a test with determined time
3. Set the "stable weight condition" ("iPS" - see paragraph 5.3)
4. Select the work memory (see paragraph 5.4)
5. Select the visualization mode of the results (wey mode/dry mode; see paragraph 5.5)
6. Reached the selected temperature, put on the pan the support or the container (aluminium sheet,
watch glass, etc.) which should contain the sample.
7. With the key T zeroing the instrument (waiting, perhaps, that the current temperature of the oven is
the same as that set).
8. Deposit the sample on the support (or container) taking care to distribute it evenly, so that the
maximum surface area is exposed.
9. To memorize the initial weight (using the key MEMg):
a) press MEMg
b) during the acquisition of the stable weight to memorize ("AcPF"), close the oven
c) wait for the visualization on the display of the current weight
10. Press the key START.
Must use a sufficient amount of sample, bearing in mind that the last digit of the dry residue percentage
or relative humidity percentage is significant only when used 10 g of sample at least.
Below the value of 1 g, the data are not reproducible.
The time that the oven takes to reach the selected temperature is depending from the temperature
difference between the departure and arrival and is still in a few minutes, and is a few minutes the time
for the stabilization of the temperature, after some initial fluctuation.
When the oven is powered on, the red indicator (located on the top of the oven)is blinking. If the
difference between the selected temperature and the actual temperature of the oven is significant, the
34
EuroTherm
ENGLISH
red light indicator remains stationary while begins to blink when the oven is reaching the selected
temperature.
When the oven is opened, a safety switch power off the heating element. Closing the oven the switch
power on the heating element to reach the selected temperature.
The oven, when it is closed, remains in the temperature also after the end of the test, to allow the
execution of other tests without having to wait for the stabilization of the temperature.
Between a test and the other, if necessary, it is possible reset the temperature to a new value.
7.1
If no data are available concerning the sample under test, the stable value determination may be
performed presetting the parameters to adequate values, depending on the sample type, and trying to
guess its behaviour considering the kind of determination.
To set the "iPS" parameters may be operate as described on paragraph 5.3; if the parameters are not
modified the instrument will be use the parameters present in memory; remember that the parameters
remain in memory even powering off the instrument.
WARNING: check that no time value is preset by pressing the SET TIME key. Otherwise zeroing the
value to zero by pressing CLEAR key.
As soon as the condition of stable weight is attained the acoustic signal will warn the operator.
At this point the led of the selected key (RS% or UM% or MEMg) start blinking and the final values of dry
residue %, humidity % and final weight, will be memorized.
To visualize the initial weight, the final humidity %, the final dry residue, the final weight and the time of
the test must be press respectively the keys MEMg, UM%, RS%, again MEMg and SET TIME.
To continue the test, independently of the key pressed, you need:
Set the timer to zero with the key CLEAR ("PPS")
Press CLRg until the led become fixed (warning: do not press long because otherwise you
erase the original weight stored)
Press again START-STOP.
During the test you can know the time elapsed, the instantaneous humidity % , the instantaneous dry
residue % and the current weight, alternately pressing SET TIME, UM%, RS% and MEMg.
7.2
If the duration of the evaporation process for the sample under test is known, proceed by presetting this
time by using the SET TIME. The end of the test is signalled by the sound.
If during the test the condition of stable weight is reached according to the preset parameters, the led of
the MEMg key will start blinking and the values of dry residue and relative humidity will be memorized
and blocked in this instant.
If the test is to be continued, the CLRg key must be pressed till the led light of the key MEMg will be
steady (warning: a too much long pressure delete the initial weight memorized).
In this case further weight changes can be observed.
However, in any case remember that if the CLRg key is pressed before the stable weight condition is
reached, the memorization of the initial weight is lost and the process must be started all over again.
WARNING !
During the determination do no touch the oven to avoid scalding.
Before performing determinations with samples which could release solvents, take into
consideration any dangerous consequences.
NOTE
If the parameters of the instrument are modified by the user, it is possible to restore the
default parameters operating as follow:
a- turn off the instrument with the main switch
b- after 30 seconds turn on the instrument while pressing the CLRg key.
If the operation has been executed correctly the display will shows the message "Pnor".

ACCESSORIES
For the EUROTHERM are available two accessories: the printer model DP24-EUT and the PPE.
Following is described the use.
8.1
By this printer it can be print the initial and final values of the tested sample following these steps:
a. on the printer: press the key PRINT.
b. on the EUROTHERM memorie the initial weight of the sample (see the key MEMg description)
and then press the key START-STOP.
c. on the printer: press the key PRINT to print the initial data.
At the end of the test will be printed the final results.
Repeat from point a. for all the samples.
8.2
PPE accessory
The PPE (external weighing pan) it allows to memorize the weight of the sample weighing it on an
additional pan placed out of the oven.
His utilization is advised with a fast volatilisation samples (for ex. wine, resins, etc.) or with a low
humidity sample (for ex. salt, sugar, PVC, etc.).
The PPE allows to reduce the problems that can provoke the samples over mentioned. In particular:
the difficulty to weight with accuracy a fast volatilisation sample if puts on the pan already in
temperature (by the immediate loss of humidity of the sample)
the repercussions on the weighing due to the cooling of the oven, if the loading operations need
too much time
The PPE (see Fig. 4) is a structure equipped with two sliding doors. On the top of the structure is
positioned the EUROTHERM, opportunely adapted for use with the additional pan (supplied with the
PPE)
For use the PPE accessory operate as follow:
