LUBRICATION SYSTEM

Lubrication System
-

Mechanical system of lubricating internal combustion engines in which a pump

forces oil into the engine bearings.
The system which stores, cleans, cools, and recirculates oil in an engine to lubricate
its moving parts and bearings. It includes the oil pump , oil pan or sump , oil coolers ,
tubing, filters , oil passages in the block, and dashboard oil gauge . Checking the level
of oil is accomplished with the oil dipstick . (automotivedictionary)
application of some oily or greasy substance in order to diminish friction.

PURPOSE OF LUBRICATION
1. Reduce the frictional resistance of the engine to aminimum to ensure maximum mechanical
efficiency.
2. Protect the engine against wear.
3. Remove all impurities from the lubricated region.
4. Form a seal between piston rings and the cylinder walls to prevent blowby.
5. Serve as a cooling agent by picking up heat.
6. Reduce friction between moving parts, which minimizes engine wear, and the creation of heat.
7. Cools a variety of internal engine parts and removes some heat from the engine.
8. Removes dirt, abrasives and contaminants from inside the engine.
9. Assists sealing of the combustion chamber by forming a film between the piston rings and the
cylinder wall.
10. Absorbs shock loads between bearings and the gears thus, suchioning and protecting engine
parts while minimizing engine noise production.
11. Stores an adequate supply of oil for lubricating internal engine parts.
12. Minimizes corrosion of internal engine components.

Employs a fully-forced feed, filtering method.

The oil stored in the oil plan is sucked by an oil pump which is directly driven by the
crankshaft. Then, the thus- sucked oil flows through an oil pump strainer and is filtered at an
oil filter. After having passed through the passages of the cylinder block, it will be divided
into two streams so as to lubricate various sections. One stream of the lubrication oil
performs lubrication of various sections of the crankshaft and connecting rod and pistonrelated parts. the other stream of the lubrication, oil rises to the cylinder head section.
Then, it performs lubrication of valve rocker shaft-related parts.

Processed from crude oil in a refinery with gasoline and diesel, along with many other
beneficial and useful products.

ENGINE OIL
-

Primarily product of petroleum, commonly called mineral oil.

2 classifications of oil:
1. S-series oils
Designed to meet performance standards for spark ignition
2. C-series oils
Meet compression ignition engine performance requirements.
