The dried banana peels from D-1 are crushed in a hammer mill C-1 to give small particle
sizes. High surface area of the cellulosic materials enhance the susceptibility of cellulose to
bacterial and enzymatic attack, deform the crystal lattice and reduce the degree of
polymerization which is necessary for the fermentation process. The feed to be ground is
introduced into the mill and the material is struck by ganged hammers which are attached to a
shaft that rotates inside the chamber at a high speed. Crushing of the peels is done by the
repeated hammer impacts, wall and particle collisions.

The discharge of the Hammer mill is introduced into the screener to separate particles finer than
Mesh 14. The oversize product is taken for further grinding and the particles finer than Mesh 14 are
taken as a product and will be fed to the bioreactor for fermentation process.
