El humanismo es una actitud filosfica y tica que hace hincapi en el valor y la
agencia de los seres humanos, individual y colectivamente, y que por lo general
prefiere el pensamiento crtico y las pruebas (racionalismo, empirismo) sobre la
aceptacin de dogmas o la supersticin. El significado del trmino humanismo ha
fluctuado,segnlos movimientos intelectuales sucesivos que se han identificadocon
l.1 En general, sin embargo, el humanismo se refiere a una perspectiva que afirma
alguna nocin de libertad y progreso. En los tiempos actuales, los movimientos
humanistas estn generalmente relacionados con el secularismo y hoy "humanismo"
normalmenteserefiereaunafilosofadevidanotestacentradaenlacapacidaddeuna
humanidadquemiraalaracionalidadynoadogmasreligiososconelfindeentender
elmundo.2

Elhumanismorenacentistafueunaactividaddereformaculturalyeducativaejercidaporrectores,coleccionistas
de libros, educadores y escritores civiles y eclesisticos, que a finales del siglo XV comenzaron a ser llamados
comoumanisti(humanistas).3 4SedesarrollduranteelsigloXIVyprincipiosdelXVyfueunarespuestaala
educacinuniversitariaescolstica,queentonceseradominadaporlafilosofaylgicaaristotlica.Laescolstica
secentrenlapreparacindeloshombresparasermdicos,abogadosotelogosprofesionalesyselesenseaba
mediantelibrosdetextoaprobadossobrelgica,filosofanatural,medicina,derechoyteologa.5Huboimportantes
centrosdehumanismoenFlorencia,Npoles,Roma,Venecia,Mantua,FerrarayUrbino.
Loshumanistasreaccionaronencontradeesteenfoqueutilitarioylapedanteraestrechamenteasociadaal.Se
trat de crear una ciudadana (con frecuencia incluidas las mujeres) capaz de hablar y escribir con elocuencia y
claridad y por lo tanto capaz de participar de la vida cvica de sus comunidades y persuadir a otros a acciones
virtuosas y prudentes. Esto se lograra a travs del estudio de la studia humanitatis, hoy conocida como las
humanidades: gramtica, retrica, historia, poesa y filosofa moral.6 Como un programa para revivir el legado
cultural(yespecialmenteelliterario)ylafilosofamoraldelaantigedadclsica,elhumanismofueunmodode
cultura ubicuo y no el programa de unos pocos genios aislados como Rabelais o Erasmo como todava se cree
popularmente.7

El humanismo secular es una completa filosofa de la vidaovisindelmundo que abarca la razn
humana, el naturalismo metafsico, la moralidad altruista y la justicia distributiva y rechaza las
afirmacionessobrenaturales,lafeyreligiosidadtesta,lapseudocienciaylasupersticin.8 9Aveces
sedenominaHumanismo(conmaysculaysinadjetivo).
La Unin Internacional Humanista y tica (IHEU) es la unin mundial de 117 organizaciones
humanistas,racionalistas,arreligiosas,ateas,bright,seculares,Culturaticaylibrepensamientoen38
pases.10El"Humanofeliz"eselsmbolooficialdelaIHEU,ademsdeserconsideradounsmbolo
universalmentereconocidodelhumanismosecular.

Elhumanismoesunafilosofadelavidademocrticaytica,queafirmaquelossereshumanostienen
el derecho y la responsabilidad de dar sentido y forma a sus propias vidas. Es sinnimo de la
construccin de una sociedad ms humana a travs de una tica basada en valores humanos y otros
valoresnaturalesenelespritudelaraznylalibreinvestigacinatravsdelascapacidadeshumanas.

Elhumanismoreligiosoesunaintegracindelafilosofaticahumanistaconritualesycreenciasreligiosasquese
centranennecesidades,interesesyhabilidadeshumanas.Aunquelospracticantesdelhumanismoreligiosonose
organizaron oficialmente bajo el nombre de "humanismo" hasta finales de los siglos XIX y XX, la unin de las
religionesnotestasconlafilosofaticacentradaenelserhumanotieneunalargahistoria.ElCultoalaRazn
(enfrancs:CultedelaRaison)fueunareliginbasadaeneldesmoideadodurantelaRevolucinfrancesa por
Jacques Hbert, Pierre Gaspard Chaumette y sus partidarios.12 En 1793, durante la Revolucin francesa, la
catedral de Notre Dame de Pars se converti en un "Templo de la Razn" y durante un tiempo la Dama de la
Libertad sustituy a la Virgen Mara en varios altares. En la dcada de 1850, Auguste Comte, el padre de la
sociologa, fund el positivismo, una "religin de humanidad".13 Uno de los primeros precursores de las
organizacionescontemporneasoficialmentehumanistasfuelaAsociacinReligiosaHumanistaformadaen1853
enLondres.13Estegrupopionerofueorganizadademocrticamenteconlaparticipacindehombresymujeresen
laeleccindeladirectivaypromueveelconocimientodelasciencias,lafilosofaylasartes.Elmovimientode
Cultura tica se fund en 1876. Su fundador Felix Adler, un ex miembro de la Asociacin de Libre religiosa,
concebi la Cultura tica como una nueva religin que retendra el mensaje tico en el corazn de todas las
religiones.Culturaticaerareligiosaenelsentidodedesempearunpapeldecisivoenlavidadelaspersonasy
abordarlascuestionesdeintersltimo.
