Objective :

2

To determine molarity of standard sodium hydroxide (NaOH)

To calculate percentage of potassium hydrogen phthalate (KHP) in an unknown
acidic sample.

Demonstrate effective team role and responsibility in the task execution.

Abstract :

re

The experiment is briefly about titration of acids and bases. There are two acids
that were used in this experiment which is potassium hydrogen phthalate (KHP)
and unknown acid. The base that was used in this experiment is sodium
hydroxide solution (NaOH).

The standardization of sodium hydroxide solution (NaOH) are carried out first by
measuring the weight of weighing paper and potassium hydrogen phthalate
(KHP) separately.Once the weighing paper and the potassium hydrogen
phthalate (KHP) are measured, record the reading of mass of both weighing paper
and hydrogen phthalate (KHP).After that, pour the sodium hydroxide solution
(NaOH) into the burette until it is full.Mix the potassium hydrogen phthalate
(KHP) with distilled water in the conical flask until it is dilute.Add 3 drops of
phenolphthalein into the conical flask.Slowly, add the sodium hydroxide solution
(NaOH) drop by drop into the conical flask containing dilute potassium hydrogen
phthalate solution (KHP).

Observe the changes colour of phenolphthalein from pink colour turns to

colourless once the sodium hydroxide solution (NaOH) are added into the conical
flask.

When the phenolphthalein in the conical flask show changes in colour from pink
to colourless once the sodium hydroxide solution (NaOH) are added drop by
drop,it shows that the end point of neutralization between sodium hydroxide
solution (NaOH) and potassium hydrogen phthalate (KHP).

Compute the average deviation from the mean to the test the
result.Explain the test result.

There is no effects of NaOH molarity to percentage of KHP in

unknown sample

The effects of wrong titration techniques to the experiment results

is no consistency in the reading of the experiment.

Conclusion:

The molarity of the standard sodium hydroxide solution (NaOH) is

1.0 mol

The percentage of potassium hydrogen phthalate (KHP) in an

unknown acidic sample is 52.75%,46.60% and 49.90%
