SCOPE AND FIELD OF APPLICATION


This standard is concerned with Sorbitol which is used in food industries.

DEFINITIONS

3.1

Sorbitol is a sugar hexahydroxyl alcohol (D-glucitol) very soluble in water,


slightly soluble in ethanol produced by hydro-genation of sugar solutions
containing the corresponding reducing sugars, and molecular weight is 182.17,
its structure as in Figure No. (1).

3.2

Synonyms: D-glucitol, D-Sorbitol, Sorbit, Sorbol.

CHARACTERISTICS
The following requirements shall be met in sorbitol:

4.1

White hygroscopic powder, crystalline powder, flakes or granules, odourless


having a sweet taste.

4.2

Content of the product shall not be less than 97% of (glycitol) and not less than
91% of D-Sorbitol on the anhydrous basis.

4.3

Melting point between 88oC and 102oC.

4.4

Water content not more than 1% (Karl Fisher method).

4.5

Sulfated ash content not more than 0.1%.

4.6

Reducing sugars content not more than 0.3%.

4.7

Total sugars content not more than 1% (as glucose).

4.8

Chlorides content not more than 50 ppm.

4.9

Sulfates content not more than 100 ppm.

4.10

Content of contaminant metallic elements in sorbitol shall not exceed the


following concentrations (ppm):
Nickel

Arsenic

Lead

Total Heavy Metals

4.11

To be free of strange odour and materials, pollutants and insects or insect parts.

4.12

To be completely free from ethanol.

5.

SAMPLING
Sampling shall be carried out according to what is mentioned in item 2.3.

TEST METHODS
The tests shall be carried out on the representative sample taken according to
item 5 to determine its conformity to all items of this standard according to GS
mentioned in item 2.4.

7.

PACKAGING, TRANSPORTATION AND STORAGE


On packaging, transportation and storage of the product, the following
restrictions shall be followed:

7.1

Packaging
The product shall be packed in clean, hygienic, dry, suitable, well-sealed, and
unpermeable to water or other liquids packages.

7.2

Transportation
The product shall be transported in such a way to protect it from mechanical
damage and contamination.

7.3

Storage
The packages shall be stored in clean and well-ventilated stores, and at a safe
distance from sources of heat, moisture or contamination.

8.

LABELLING
Without prejudice to the requirements of Gulf standard mentioned in item (2.1)
the following shall be declared on the container:

The statement The product is tendent to absorb in water.
