1.

SCOPE AND FIELD OF APPLICATION


This standard is concerned with Mannitol which is used in food industries.

DEFINITIONS

3.1

Mannitol is a sugar hexahydroxyl alcohol (D-mannitol) soluble in water, very


slightly soluble in ethanol, practically insoluble in chloroform and in ether,
produced by hydrogenation of sugar solutions containing the corresponding
reducing sugars and molecular weight is 182.2 its structure as in Figure No.
(1).

Synonyms: Mannitol; mannit, D-mannitol.

CHARACTERISTICS
The following requirements shall be met in mannitol:

4.1

Sweet tasting, white, odourless, crystalline powder.

4.2

Percentage of D-mannitol shall be ranged between 96% and 102% on


anhydrous basis.

4.3

Loss on drying at 105oC for 4 hrs not more than 0.3%.

4.4

Melting point shall be between 165oC and 169oC with softening at a lower
temperature.

pH shall be ranged 5 and 8.

4.6

Sulfated ash content not more than 0.1%.

4.7

Reducing sugars content not more than 0.3% as glucose.

4.8

Total sugar content not more 1% as glucose.

4.9

Chlorides content not more than 70 ppm.

Sulfates content not more than 100 ppm.

4.11

Content of toxic metallic elements in mannitol not exceeding the following


concentrations (ppm):
Nickel

Arsenic

Lead

Total Heavy Metals

4.12

To be free of strange odour and materials, pollutants and insects or insect parts.

4.13

To be free from ethanol.

5.

SAMPLING
Sampling shall be carried out according to item mentioned in 2.3.

6.

TEST METHODS
The tests shall be carried out or the representative sample taken according to
item 5 to determine its conformity to all items of this standard according to GS
mentioned in item 2.4.

7.

PACKAGING, TRANSPORTATION AND STORING


On packaging, transportation and storing of the product, the following
restrictions shall be followed:

7.1

Packaging
The product shall be packaged in clean, hygienic, dry, suitable, well-sealed,
and unpermeable to water or other liquids packages.

7.2

Transportation
The product shall be transported in such a way to protect it from mechanical
damage and contamination.

7.3

Storage
The packages shall be stored in clean and well-ventilated stores, and at a safe
distance from sources of heat, moisture or contamination.

8.

LABELLING
Without prejudice to the requirements of Gulf standard mentioned in item
(2.1), the following shall be declared on the container:
