HOME CURRICULUM INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
The students at Bishop Douglass School are entitled to a broad and balanced curr
iculum based on the following areas of experience:
Expressive, aesthetic and creative
Linguistic
Mathematical
Physical
Scientific
Social, environmental, political, economic and vocational
Spiritual and moral
Technological
Students in Key Stage 4 and Post-16 should also be able to specialise in areas o
f the curriculum that allow them to pursue their talents and aspirations whilst
continuing to develop their key skills.
OUR CURRICULUM AIMS:
To provide opportunities across the curriculum for spiritual development.
To provide opportunities for the development of moral conscience within the cont
ext of Catholic teaching through guided discussions of practical moral issues.
To develop lively and enquiring minds, the ability to question and argue rationa
lly.
To be able to listen and consider other points of view.
To acquire understanding, knowledge and skills relevant to their present needs a
nd to future patterns of employment, family life and community involvement.
To be able to make realistic informed choices.
To use language, number and technology effectively.
To make appropriate and effective use of information communication technology.
To communicate effectively, to access and manipulate information and to solve pr
oblems.
To develop motivation and commitment, the capacity to learn from success and fai
lure and the readiness to persevere.

KEY STAGE 3
Year 7 & 8
In Year 7 and 8 classes are grouped according to ability. Students are taught in
tutor groups as much as possible and by as few teachers as possible to allow st
udents to develop good relationships and to ensure a good start to their seconda
ry school career. Currently two languages are taught in Year 7 and Year 8: Frenc
h and Spanish. Students are placed into a langauge according to prior experience
and skill and then, if they chose, for GCSE in KS4.

Students follow the KS4 programme for Core subjects (English, Maths, Science, RE
and PE), and study a range of four KS4 foundation subjects.

Year 10 & Year 11
All Year 10 and 11 students study Maths, English, Science, RE and PE. As in Year
9, students choose other subjects from 4 option blocks; each block is taught fo
r 2 hours per fortnight.
The KS4 curriculum incorporates a range of courses designed to cater for the nee
ds and aspirations of the students in KS4. There is a very broad offer of GCSE s
ubjects, including Languages (some, such as Portuguese, taught in after-school l
essons), Triple Sciences, History, Geography, Sociology, Art & Design, Media, Dr
ama, Music and Business Studies. We offer a range of BTEC subjects as well.
At Key Stage 4, Maths, Science and English are taught in groups set by ability.

Other subjects are taught in mixed ability groups.

Careers Education is an element of the PHSE scheme of work in both Key Stages, w
hilst Work Related Learning is delivered across the curriculum, in the PSHE prog
ramme, through one week of work experience in Year 10 and through suspended curr
iculum days.

16 CURRICULUM
A wide range of AS, A level, and BTec/GCSE courses are offered post-16. These in
cluded Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Further Maths, Geography, Sociology,
French, Spanish and Psychology at AS and A2. Engineering, Health & Social Care,
Business Studies, Leisure & Tourism are offered at L3 BTEC. We therefore offer d
iscrete pathways to allow students to follow their own strengths to achieve qual
ifications from ages 14 to 19.
Each subject block can allow up to 5 hours per week contact time. In addition, s
tudents study RE for an hour each a week and gain an AS at the end of two years.
Optional activities are available such as 6th form PE/games which takes place o
n Friday afternoons.
