Improve your players' 1-on-1 skills with Make Your Move DVD
That means finding a way past some of the best players in the world in diamond
defences using formations like 4-4-2, 3-5-2 and, of course, the classic 4-1-4-1, by
creating a diamond between the centre backs, goalkeeper and the pivot. The pivot will
also form a diamond with the other midfielders creating a strong formation right up the
pitch.
The role of the goalkeeper is vital with positioning key to stopping any attacks through
the defence. This works with things like the Sweeper Keeper personified by Manuel
Neuer and his clever positioning in front of goal. The pivot also needs use a wide range
of attacking as well as defensive qualities.
Find out more about the key defensive midfield role below, and develop your own pivot
like Sergio Busquets.

When looking for a player to play in the defensive midfield position in your own team,
you should look for players with the following characteristics:
Be able to drop into and hold the defensive line, possessing good defensive
qualities.
Be able to control and direct play from a static deep position, so being a point of
reference for the whole team.
Players in the defensive midfield role will also have a range of responsibilities. If you
have a player who is developing in this position, then encourage them to take on the
following responsibilities:
Protect the centre backs by denying through balls and blocking passing routes
into attack plus cover any holes when a defender gets pulled out of position
Work hard in the middle of the pitch to win the ball and create space for attackers
Stay central disrupting and destroying plays as they come through the middle of
the park
Lastly, most defensive midfielders often fit a certain physical profile. Whilst there are
variations on this, such as France's Kante compared to Spain's Busquets, many of their
physical attributes will overlap. Keep in mind the following attributes when choosing to
develop the defensive midfielder in your team:

The rules
Divide the players so that you have 5 players and a goalkeeper in each end zone. The
players number themselves 1 to 5 and attempt to retain possession from the goalkeeper
by passing in sequence.
Players must shout out their number when they are looking to receive the ball
(encouraging communication). And the player in possession should be encouraged to
dribble with the ball or protect it from the goalkeeper until a call is heard.
The goalkeepers may win the ball through interception with their hands or feet, or by
tackling a player in possession.
Ten passes wins a point for the team. See which team can score most points in ten
minutes.
Teams can change numbers halfway through to confuse goalkeepers.
In the progression the players must make a long pass to their goalkeeper.
Main objectives
Possession play and accuracy of long passing.
Set up
Area: 45x30 yards divided into 3 15x30 yard zones
Players: 12
Equipment: Cones, balls
"Pass quickly"
"Find the keeper"
Progression
Allow players to pass in any sequence. Now, on your call they must look for the first
opportunity to pass across the empty zone to their goalkeeper in the other zone. The
goalkeeper can catch or control the ball with feet. Defenders can intercept the ball but
not tackle the goalkeeper.
Finally, allow defenders to move into the middle zone to force the long pass to be made
over the top of them.
Hint
You can play 6v2 in the end zones which makes retaining possession more difficult but
gives an option for the long pass.
