Green Bay created just one turnover but had the opportunity for more in a victory over Detroit on Sunday. Micah Hyde (33) has been a veteran presence for the Packers in a young
secondary.

Bye week comes at good time

Week 4 break could
pay dividends later
The Associated Press

As coach Mike McCarthy excused his players late Monday afternoon for the start of their bye
week, sentiments about having
the break so soon on their schedule were mixed.
The passing game appears to
be on better footing after a big
first half by Aaron Rodgers and

his receivers in the 34-27 win over

the Detroit Lions on Sunday. So
disrupting that momentum after
two shaky outings to start the
season wasnt desired.
But Green Bays pass defense
might need some work, so the
long layoff after only three games
could be in the Packers favor.
Especially when injuries to
several key players left the defense short-handed against the
Lions.
Initially, nobody really cares
for an early bye, defensive tackle

Mike Daniels said. But with all of

the injuries that we have, its definitely good to have right now.
McCarthy agreed the teams
earliest bye week since 2013
not long ago, of course when
the Packers also took a week off
after just three games, comes at
a good time.
Its early. Its different, but I
think its obvious we need it, McCarthy said Monday.
Players quickly entered and
exited the locker room after McCarthy wrapped up a team meet-

ing. He said the team wont be

back together until next Monday,
when Green Bay starts to prepare for a Sunday night matchup
Oct. 9 against the New York Giants at Lambeau Field.
They just need to travel safe
and spend the time with their
loved ones and take care of themselves and be smart, be safe,
McCarthy said.
And when the players return

ing 13 straight weeks until

New Years Day to end the
regular season, McCarthy
is hopeful his team will be
close to full strength again.
The defense played
without four injured starters Sunday.
Linebacker Clay Matthews (ankle/hamstring)
and safety Morgan Burnett (groin) were injured
in the Week 2 loss at unbeaten NFC North leader
Minnesota. Veteran nose
tackle Letroy Guion went
out with a knee injury early in that game and is sidelined indefinitely.
Cornerback
Sam
Shields has been out since
suffering a concussion in
the season-opening win at
Jacksonville. Damarious
Randall and Blake Martinez missed snaps during
the game, but both returned to action.
Versatile defensive end/
linebacker Datone Jones
also was out Sunday with a
knee injury, though he felt
he could have played.
I just think, overall,
it helps our team just get
back healthy, Jones said

about the bye week.

The extensive injury list
forced the Packers to play
eight rookies on defense

against the Lions, who

stormed back from a 31-3

points in the final minutes.

Kenny Clark, the teams

helped Green Bay maintain its No. 1 ranking in the

NFL for run defense.
The Packers held De-

troit, which played without injured running back

Ameer Abdullah, to 50
rushing yards. Green
Bay has allowed an average of 42.7 yards on the
ground after three games,
far ahead of No. 2-ranked
Philadelphias average of
71 yards.
Thats an encouraging start for a run defense
that Daniels, the fifth-year
anchor of the line, remembers as being horrible
and embarrassing the
last few seasons.
Were playing tough,
and guys are flying around
to the ball, and were just
getting physical with the
other team, Daniels said.
Its just that freaking simple.
The shaky play of the
Packers pass defense is
cause for concern going
into the bye, however. Lions quarterback Matthew
Stafford exploited Green
Bays depleted secondary
for 385 passing yards, including a career-high 205
yards and two touchdowns
by receiver Marvin Jones
Jr.
The Packers have allowed an average of 307.3
yards through the air, fifth
worst in the league.

Packers offense

against Detroit
But more players injured

Green Bay wide receiver Jordy Nelson caught two TDs in the first half on Sunday, getting the offense back on track.

Jordy Nelson tossed

the ball high into the air
after catching his second
touchdown pass of the day,
a gesture that passes for
a rare display of emotion
for the workmanlike wide
receiver.
The Green Bay Packers
offense is having fun again
heading into an early bye
week.
Aaron Rodgers threw
for 205 yards and four
touchdowns, including two
in the first half to Nelson,
and the Packers built a big
early lead before holding
off the Detroit Lions for a
34-27 win Sunday.
Coming into this week,
we felt that as an offense
that we just werent having
enough fun. We wanted to

bring some extra energy to

the game, Nelson said.
Rodgers was 15 of 24,
leading the Packers (2-1)
to touchdowns on their
first three series. Nelson
had 101 yards on six catches, returning to the form
that made him one of the
NFLs best receivers before missing the 2015 season with a knee injury.
Just got on the same
page. Hitting Jordy for
some big plays helps,
Rodgers said. Jordy and
I connected. Whenever
were doing that, it kind of
opens other things up for
the offense.
Just like back in 2014,
when the Rodgers-to-Nelson combination was one
of the best passing game

tandems in the NFL.

There is still a lot of
work to do for the Packers to get back to that level
of production. Still, this
was the just kind of performance that the offense
needed to shake off the
struggles from the 17-14
loss in Week 2 to Minnesota.
Im one that usually
doesnt show too much
emotion. Id rather just
the hand the ball in and
continue on, Nelson said.
But if thats what it takes
for guys to feel that energy.
I mean, it does.

PACK IS BACK

So much for the fuss

over the Packers struggling offense.
Coach Mike McCarthy
and Rodgers heard questions about the out-of-sync
passing game following
the loss to Minnesota. The
Packers burned Detroits
secondary with big plays to
build a big lead, and Eddie
Lacy ran for 103 yards on
17 carries.
Offensively, the focus

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2016

was to be a good, healthy

mix of run and pass, so we
accomplished that today,
McCarthy said.

GET DEFENSIVE

The
Lions
gained
chunks of yardage in the
second half after being
forced to play catch-up
following Green Bays big
early lead. The Packers
defense was also missing
four starters, including
linebacker Clay Matthews.
But
Green
Bays
staunch run defense had
another big day, albeit
against a Lions offense
playing without injured
tailback Ameer Abdullah.
Detroit managed just 50
yards on 23 carries, with a
team-high 38 yards on 10
carries by Dwayne Washington.

INJURY REPORT

TE Jared Cook went

to the locker room with a
right ankle injury after getting tangled up with a defender at 11:35 of the second quarter.

Manning not worried about Beckhams outbursts

Giants prep for Vikings
before facing Pack
The Associated Press

A lot has been written about Odell Beckham Jr. losing his cool on the bench during
the New York Giants game against Josh
Norman and the Washington Redskins.
The third-year receiver looked agitated
at times, mouthed off and had to be confronted on at least two occasions by new
coach Ben McAdoo about keeping his poise.
Thats Beckham though. The 23-yearold is intense. He plays hard, and he wants
to win in the worst way.
It didnt happen Sunday in the Redskins
29-27 win on a fourth-quarter field goal.
Despite being a distraction on the sideline, Beckham played well for the Giants
(2-1).
Going one-on-one with the immensely
talented Josh Norman most of the game,
he had seven catches for a season-high 121
yards. His best plays came in the fourth
quarter with the game on the line.
Thats why quarterback Eli Manning
wasnt concerned about Beckham on
Wednesday when the Giants went over
game film and started preparations for
Monday nights game in Minnesota against
the undefeated Vikings.
In fact, he doesnt feel Beckham is a distraction.
Hes an emotional player. He plays

bothered quarterback Eli Manning yet.

hard, he wants to win, Manning said. He

wants to go out there. There are times
where guys can get fired up on the sidelines when stuff happens. Its all: Hey,
can we get back poise, go out there, produce and make the plays. So again, Im

not worried about it. I think hes making

plays and doing a lot of good things. Hell
continue to do that.
Manning said he never talked to Beckham about what got him so upset.
Whats more important is to stop mak-

ing the mistakes that cost the Giants this

past weekend. They turned the ball over
three times, including a fourth-quarter
interception thrown by Manning in the
red zone. They now have seven in three
games.
New York also cant have a repeat of
the penalties. There were 11 for 128 yards,
including five 15-yarders, including two
that led to the ejection of center Weston
Richburg.
We have to understand that we have
to protect the football, Manning said.
We cant give them a short field. We have
to play smart. Smarter than what weve
been doing. Hopefully we can still go out
there and execute. Hit some big plays and
be explosive. We have to continue to do
some of the good things that weve been
doing.
The offense has moved the ball, but it
has scored only one touchdown in the second half.
I think, obviously, were getting down
there, we just have to find a ways; turnovers hurt, the penalties hurt, Manning
said. So we have to find ways to stay in a
good rhythm and good down and distance
and not have the negative plays.
The Giants also have to worry about
the cornerbacks this week before traveling to Minnesota for a primetime game
Monday. Starter Dominique RodgersCromartie (groin) and first-round draft
pick Eli Apple (hamstring) said they felt a
little better on Wednesday.

Park components finalized for Titletown District project

Sledding hill and skating trail featured
The Green Bay Packers on
Thursday announced the final
components for phase one of the
Titletown Districts park, with the
main attraction set to be a sledding hill that will feature tubing
lanes with fantastic views of Lambeau Field.
The sledding hill will be located within an area that includes a
dynamic skating trail and pond,
with the hills slope, beginning at a
height of 45 feet, serving as a roof
over two buildings. The skating
trail will artfully wind underneath
the structure and connect to an
open skating area. Ice making,

snowmaking and grooming equipment will ensure an extended

tubing and skating season in the
park. In warmer months, the hills
sloped green space will provide a
unique area for numerous activities.
The sledding and skating area
is just one component of the multiacre parks year-round, diverse
programming that will feature
fitness-related activities, cultural
opportunities, versatile space
for a variety of uses, and teaminspired public art, in addition to
festive gameday action.
In addition to the sledding hill

and skating rink, the four other

components of phase one in Titletowns park will include a plaza, an
activity area, a playground and a
sports field.
The public park in Titletown
will be a tremendous asset for our
community, and serve as an appealing attraction for visitors and
future residents alike, said Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy. We made many changes to
this first phase of the public park
based on input from experts in
park planning. The focus groups
with community stakeholders
were also extremely helpful in this
process. Were excited to see it
come to life.

In total, the sledding hills

tubing lanes will stretch 300 feet
from start to finish. Two buildings
will provide the slope for the hill,
with the main building housing a
warming lodge and snack bar on
the ground level and event space
on the second level. A second
building will contain skate and
tube rental operations. The total
skating surface area, including
the trail and pond area, is 14,200
square feet.
The plaza, adjacent to Ridge
Road, will feature landscaping as
well as hardscape and public art.
The area will be programmed
in multiple ways, with festivals
and holiday fairs, or simply as a

space in which to relax.

The activity area will feature
games such as horseshoes, shuffleboard, bocce, pingpong and
bean bag toss, as well as other organized options.
The playground will feature
dynamic equipment with a Play 60
theme in a setting and configuration that is unique to the community. The 36,000 square-foot area
also will have football-specific
equipment and a 40-yard dash
component.
The sports field, sized as a
regulation football field, will utilize
an artificial surface that will maximize its use in a variety of ways
through much of the year.

Power rankings: Broncos, Pats remain perfect without starting QBs

What a performance by the Chiefs defense, which is still missing Justin Houston, Vrentas said.

The New England Patriots also are 3-0 despite playing without superstar Tom Brady.
The past two Super Bowl winners also

The Patriots received six first-place

The Patriots will play their last game

per usual, Newsdays Bob Glauber said.

Carolina Panthers

OPPONENT: AT FALCONS, SUNDAY, NOON

Atlanta is giving up 433 yards per game only New

points allowed per game is fifth-worst in the league. The
Panthers are seventh in offensive yards, generating
389.3 yards per game and thats after being limited
to 306 yards against a tough Minnesota defense. Carolina will have plenty of motivation to play well; theyre
trailing Atlanta by one game in the NFC South. With

a decimated Bears defense, currently ranked 30th in
rushing yards allowed.

San Diego Chargers

OPPONENT: VS NEW ORLEANS SAINTS, SUNDAY, 4:25

San Diego should move the ball up and down the
field in this game. New Orleans defense is right
where its been for three consecutive seasons: 31st in
yards allowed. Be sure to also take a good look at your
Saints. The over/under on this game is around 53 by
far the biggest number of the week.

MATCHUPS TO AVOID
Tennessee Titans

OPPONENT: AT HOUSTON TEXANS, SUNDAY, NOON

Tennessee managed just 10 points at home against

OPPONENT: AT BALTIMORE RAVENS, SUNDAY, NOON

Something will have to give when the Raiders and
their second-ranked offense (producing 436 yards per
game) travel to Baltimore to face the Ravens secondranked defense (yielding just 254 yards per game).
After watching Arizona struggle in Buffalo last week,
were betting the long trip/early start tips the scales
in Baltimores favor.
SOLID PLAY: Latavius Murray
WORTH A LOOK: Amari Cooper, Michael Crabtree
LAST RESORT: Derek Carr, DeAndre Washington,
Jalen Richard, Clive Walford, Sebastian Janikowski
STAY AWAY: Raiders D/ST

New York Giants

OPPONENT: AT MINNESOTA VIKINGS, MONDAY, 7:30

The Vikings have faced the Packers and Panthers
in consecutive weeks and are still ranked sixth in
fewest yards allowed. They are even tougher on
points only Seattle and Philadelphia have allowed
fewer than the Vikes 13.3 per game. New York is
ranked sixth in total offense and should be able to
muster some yards in the passing game. The Giants
face a strong pass rush, however. Minnesota leads the
NFL with 15 sacks. If the Giants fall behind early, it
could be a long night for Eli Manning.
MUST START: Odell Beckham Jr.
WORTH A LOOK: Eli Manning, Sterling Shepard,
Giants D/ST
LAST RESORT: Orleans Darkwa
STAY AWAY: Will Tye, Larry Donnell, Josh Brown

ALSO BEWARE
Chicago Bears

OPPONENT: AT VS DETROIT LIONS, SUNDAY, NOON

Right now, the Bears are a reflection of their coach:
a rambling, incoherent mess. Jordan Howard could,
however, find reasonable success on the ground.

Los Angeles Rams

OPPONENT: AT ARIZONA CARDINALS, SUNDAY, 3:25

Despite scoring 37 points in Tampa, the Rams remain dead last in offense. Theyll run into an angry
team in Arizona this week.

a league-worst Raiders defense. Its hard to imagine

the Titans having much success on the road against
a significantly better Texans squad. The Titans have
a solid run game, but are 24th in passing, averaging
just 229 yards per game through the air. That ranking
is likely to drop this week in what should be a tough
day for Mariota. Houstons defense is ranked No. 1
versus the pass. At 40.5, this game is tied with Jets/
Seahawks for the lowest over/under of the week.
SOLID PLAY: DeMarco Murray
WORTH A LOOK: Delanie Walker*
LAST RESORT: Derrick Henry, Jace Amaro (if no
Walker), Titans D/ST

OVERVIEW

Sunday, the Vikings road triumph

over Carolina, and New Yorks collapse at home against Washington,
covered both ends of the emotional
gamut. Mike Zimmer, in a dead heat
with New Englands Bill Belichick for
Coach of the Year, led his Vikings into
Charlotte, where the Panthers last lost
in Week 11 of 2014, and oversaw a beating on Cam Newton that would make
Wade Phillips Broncos proud. Indeed,
Cam Newtons kryptonite continues to
be unrelenting pressure from the edges
and up the middle, this time courtesy
of Everson Griffen, Tom Johnson and
Brian Robison instead of Von Miller,
DeMarcus Ware and Derek Wolfe.
The Vikings also received another
sharp Sam Bradford showing against
a great defense, plus a punt return
touchdown from Marcus Sherels,
resulting in a complete team win to
culminate another week of adversity
that just as easily couldve quickly
went south along with the charter

flight to Carolina.
Southbound is the best way to describe Big Blues team discipline in
a staggering self-destruction versus
Washington that featured penalties,
picks and Odell Beckham Jr. getting
punked on the sideline by a stationary
kicking net.

MATCHUP TO WATCH

Beckham missed last years meeting

due to a suspension making this his
first bout with Zimmers feisty CBs.
After dominating Kelvin Benjamin
and Devin Funchess Sunday, theyll
try and curtail one of the leagues most
dangerous, and volatile, playmakers.
The return of Xavier Rhodes, inactive
in Weeks 1-2 with a knee injury, and
growth of Trae Waynes mean the rich
have gotten richer in Minnesota.

BY THE NUMBERS

Minnesota rung up eight sacks and

12 QB hits on Newton a week ago, eerily
similar to Denvers seven-sack, 13-hit super slaughtering in February.

QB: Aaron Rodgers snapped his 14game, sub-100.0 passer rating slide with
a deadly efficient gem versus Detroit.
Grade: B
RB: Eddie Lacy is averaging 5.0 yards
per carry and, while he doesnt look slimmer, his production has been impressive; he just needs more work. Grade: B+
WR: Jordy Nelson has frequented the
end zone and the explosiveness is returning. Randall Cobb and Davante Adams
have been more dependable. Grade: B
TE: Jared Cook has yet to add a downfield element and is now injured. Richard Rodgers and Justin Perillo have
made the most of their chances. Grade:

OL: Given the abrupt release of Josh
Sitton, its adjusted admirably with two
strong outings and a dud against a Vikings D that makes most feeble. Grade:

DL: Hard to ask for more from Mike
Daniels, Letroy Guion and the NFLs
No. 1 run D, which gets reinforcements with Mike Pennel returning in

Week Five. Grade: A

ILB: Ted Thompson knew something
we didnt in waiting until Round Four
to find Jake Ryan and Blake Martinez.
Grade: A
OLB: Nick Perry has starred for this
unit, whose strong depth was tested Sunday with injuries to Clay Matthews and
Datone Jones. Grade: A
CB: Damarious Randall and Quinten
Rollins have missed Sam Shields, sidelined in Weeks 2-3 after a fabulous showing in Jacksonville. Grade: B
S: When healthy, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix,
Morgan Burnett and Micah Hyde might
be NFLs best trio. Grade: B+
ST: New P Jacob Schum has been average, Mason Crosby has been automatic
and Ty Montgomerys heady play illustrates improved coaching. Grade: BCOACHES: Dom Capers has been masterful, mixing in youngsters with his
stalwarts. Mike McCarthys adaptability
must continue for an offense not yet out
of the woods. Grade: B+

PACKERS NOTEBOOK
By Green & Gold Express Staff

DANIELS, RUSH
DEFENSE MAKE STAND

JAKE
RYAN
LEUENBERGER

It was third-and-goal at the 1 during

Sundays game against the Detroit Lions, and the Green Bay Packers needed to make a play on defense.
Mike Daniels delivered, serving as
a one-man wrecking ball.
At the snap, Daniels
drove back right guard
Larry Warford. That
caused a collision
with left guard Laken
Tomlinson, who was
pulling to the right.
And that became the
equivalent of a four-car
pileup when tight end
Cole Wick, who was
slanting from the left
side of the formation
to serve as the lead
blocker, ran into
Tomlinson.
If that wasnt
enough,
Daniels made the
tackle,
dropping running
back Dwayne
Washington
for a loss of 1
yard.
The Lions scored
on a fourthd o w n
touchdown
pass from
Matthew
Stafford,
but
that
one play
describes
why
the
Packers run
defense has been
so dominant during
the first three games.
Green Bays defensive
front has been the aggressor and
consistently playing on the other
side of the line of scrimmage.
I think our big guys, especially
on the outside, have been attacking
and knocking people back, so its hard
if youre pulling the lineman or whatever if you can get an inverted line of
scrimmage, defensive coordinator
Dom Capers said. That happened on
the goal-line play with Mike Daniels.
His penetration where he knocked

the guard back, and they were trying

to bring a tight end and a guard from
the opposite side, and there was a
pile of bodies basically. On that play,
Mike Daniels used up three blocks
and made that tackle because those
two guys coming back were assigned
to block people on the other side of the
play.
According to Pro-Football-Reference.com, the Packers have 19 tackles
for losses on running plays. Baltimore
is next with 13. With 6.3 per game,
Green Bay is on pace for 101 TFLs on
running plays. That would be more
than its combined 89 from 2014 and
2015.
The run defense could get even
tougher in the next couple weeks.
Defensive tackle Letroy Guion, who
missed the Detroit game with a knee
injury, could be back next week to face
the Giants. Mike Pennel has one more
game to miss in his opening four-game
suspension for violating the NFLs policy on performance enhancing drugs.

BYE WEEK PRIORITIES

For the Packers to become legitimate Super Bowl challengers, theyll

need to get their passing offense and
passing defense in order.
The game against Detroit was a
good step in that direction for Aaron
Rodgers and the passing game. While
he finished with only 205 yards, he got
in a rhythm and threw with accuracy
two things he didnt do the week before at Minnesota. Its fair to point out
that Rodgers four-touchdown performance came against a Detroit defense
that ranks last in the league in opponent passer rating. Coming out of the
bye, the Packers face the Giants (14th
in opponent passer rating), Cowboys
(19th) and Bears (23rd), visit the Falcons (31st) and host the Colts (25th).
That, in theory, should give Rodgers
and Co. the opportunity to build upon
last weeks success.
I dont think if anybody gives a
you-know-what if the offense is back or
not, Rodgers said after the game. Its
just about winning. And we got a win,
were 2-1. We were efficient at times,
thats important. We did a good job on
third downs. But there are going to be
games like this where we have to outscore the opponent and we did today.
While the schedule looks promising
for the passing offense, the Packers
must get their passing defense fixed in
a hurry. After the bye, its the Giants
Eli Manning, who is second in comple-

tion percentage and seventh in yards.

Theres uncertainty for the next two
games, with Dallas Tony Romo (back)
and Chicagos Jay Cutler (thumb) potentially back in the lineup. Then, the
Packers face two of the best in the
business in Atlantas Matt Ryan (first
in passer rating) and Indianapolis Andrew Luck (eighth in yards).
No question, Capers said of the
need to fix the coverage issues. When
youre playing as many young guys as
were playing right now, I think that
youll see us get better. I think that
well improve as we go along. Some of
those guys are seeing things for the
first time. We had an awful lot of young
guys on that field yesterday. Youre
going against a veteran quarterback
and a lot of skill. Our guys will improve
from their experience yesterday.

LACY OFF AND RUNNING

Eddie Lacy finished with 103 yards

on 17 carries in the victory over Detroit. It was the first 100-yard game in
September in his career.
It gives us confidence, Lacy said.
I think the offensive line did a great
job, the tight ends and receivers did a
great job blocking and opening holes,
and I was able to take advantage of
what they gave me. It just gives us
confidence and lets us know that if we
have to run the ball, we can definitely
do so.
Through three games, Lacy has
carried 43 times for 214 yards. Hes
averaging an impressive 5.0-yard average, looking more explosive and more
determined than he did a year ago,
when he averaged 4.1.

NO POST-BYE BLUES

One potential good omen for the

Oct. 9 game against the Giants: Under
coach Mike McCarthy, the Packers are
8-2 in the game immediately after the
bye. From 2009 through 2014, Green
Bay went 6-0 with a combined margin
of 203-84. Last year, however, the Packers got trounced, 29-10, at Denver.
Winning is what this is all about,
McCarthy said. But, really, winning
and improvement is the focus after
each and every game. We still have
a lot of work to do. We have so much
more that we can do and so much
more were going to do. Its just staying
focused and keeping everybody in the
room the players, the coaches, support staff doing everything they need
to do to get better.

For years, the strength of the Green

Bay Packers offense has been twotime MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers
and the passing game. The strength of
the defense has been a pass-intercepting secondary.
Its been a different story through
the first three games of this season.
While the passing game struggled
through the first two games before returning to form for the first half, at
least against Detroit on Sunday, the
Packers rank 12th in yards per rushing
attempt. Defensively, the Packers are
29th against the pass but lead the NFL
by a wide margin in rushing yards allowed per attempt and per game.
The ability to run the football and
stop the run was a very high priority,
coach Mike McCarthy said on Monday,
a day after a 34-27 win over the Lions.
It wasnt just part of the speech that
you give every year. We applied more
time, energy, emphasis, particularly
even in how we called the games in
preseason, because teams that run the
football well usually defend it very well
and vice-versa. That component, I feel
good about after three weeks. Actually,
a conversation Aaron and I had in our
meeting was this is the first time in my
career here that our run game is ahead
of our pass game, and thats kind of
where we are.
A four-touchdown first half against
Detroit helped move Rodgers from No.
22 to No. 9 in the league in passer rating. However, hes 25th in yards, 26th in
yards per attempt and 27th in completion percentage. Contrast those last
two numbers to Rodgers No. 4 all-time

ranking in yards per attempt and No. 6

all-time rating in completion percentage.
Theres nothing revolutionary that
we did (Sunday), McCarthy said. We
executed better on offense.
The strength of the defense has been
in impenetrable run defense. Green
Bay is allowing 1.8 yards per carry. No
other team is allowing less than 3.0
yards per carry, with the Giants a distant second at 3.18. Green Bay is giving
up merely 42.7 rushing yards per game,
almost 30 yards better than Philadelphias second-ranked 71.7. The Packers
have given 128 rushing yards in three
games. They gave up more than that in
six games last year.
Our outside guys are doing a good
job, defensive coordinator Dom Capers said. I think weve got some physical guys there Nick Perry, Datone
(Jones), Julius Peppers. Those are bigger guys who can attack, that we feel
should be good matchups on tight ends
and quite frankly on tackles because
those guys play physical. Mike Daniels gives us a good physical presence
inside. Weve had more negative runs
than weve had in the first three games
than we normally have around here. We
have to keep that element of it going because if you can get a negative run and
the down and distance is in your favor,
you can do whatever you want on the
next down basically whether you want
to cover or pressure.
In theory, the second- and thirdand-longs that come from stout run
defense should be a pass defenses best
friend. Instead, the Packers rank 28th

FROM PAGE 16

with 307.3 passing yards allowed per game, 29th with

8.31 passing yards allowed
per attempt and 27th with
an opponent passer rating
of 105.3. The NFLs leading receivers are Detroits
Marvin Jones and Minnesotas Stefon Diggs, who
lit up the Packers the past
two weeks. The loss of Sam
Shields (concussion) for the
past two games and safety
Morgan Burnett (groin) and
outside linebacker Clay Matthews (ankle/hamstring) for
the Detroit game certainly
didnt help, but their absence was hardly the only
reason for the problems.
We know we need both
to be the type of offense that
we want to be. And its no different on defense, McCarthy said. Our pass rush has
always been outstanding the
last couple of years, and weve
had some challenges with the
players being injured and so
forth, but our run defense is
ahead of our pass defense
right now. We understand
that. Its a focus of ours, and
thats the beauty of this game.
Well work on that, and itll be
a big part of our game planning and emphases as we go
into the Giants game.
The big question is why
the Packers strengths have
become weaknesses and the
weaknesses have become

strengths. Perhaps its a byproduct of training camp limitations. Two-a-day practices

are ancient history. The Packers, like many teams, spend
most of camp and the preseason working on their depth
chart and grooming their
young players. Perhaps its
not possible to come out with
all cylinders firing. Because
the Packers have run the ball
well and stopped the run exceptionally well, theyre 2-1 at
the bye. Now, its time to get
the passing game and passing
defense up to speed.
Im a positive person. I
think you get what you emphasize, McCarthy said.
Do you emphasize more in
the pass? How do you do it?
You only have so much time.
Everybody has the same
amount of time. Everybody
has the same practice structure. Were all under the
same rules and regulations
of the league. What you do
with that time and how do
you apply it?
Thats why scheduling is
so important. To me, scheduling is part of the game
plan. How do you schedule
and practice your players?
Those are the conversations that I have all the time.
We spend a tremendous
amount of time on schedules and reps and adjusting,
and youre always trying
to tweak things to give that
proper attention and time to
improving the areas you feel
like you need to improve.

Lions picking up the pieces after loss

Defense without Levy, Williams held late
The Associated Press

It was a defenses nightmare: Aaron Rodgers

throwing here, throwing
there, scrambling for a first
down and seemingly no
way to stop him.
The Detroit Lions had
no answers for the Packers
late in a 34-27 loss on Sunday. It was one of the reasons Detroit fell to 1-2.
After Matthew Staffords 35-yard touchdown
pass to Marvin Jones Jr.
with 3:34 left closed the deficit to seven points, the Lions defense couldnt get off
the field. Rodgers ran for
a first down on third-and-8
with 3:22 left and followed
that up with a 9-yard pass.
Eddie Lacy then ran for 9
yards and a first down to
take the clock down to the
two-minute warning.
With Detroit out of timeouts, Rodgers knelt down
on three consecutive plays
to run out the clock.

We have to play defense

like we know how to play.
We havent been as stout as
we should be, Lions coach
Jim Caldwell said. Just
to get that stop at the end,
we couldnt come up with it
when we needed it.
After being shredded in
the first half - Green Bay
led 31-10 after the first 30
minutes - the Lions forced
the Packers to punt on successive drives in the fourth
quarter. It was a strong
showing for a unit without
linebackers DeAndre Levy
(quad) and Antwione Williams (hamstring). Another
linebacker, Zaviar Gooden,
was signed off the practice
squad last week and played
most of the second half
after replacing Thurston
Armbrister.
Were going to expect
them to take care of their
assignments successfully,
Caldwell said.
Still, Armbrister was
matched up against Pack-

Injuries wreak havoc

with Chicago roster
Bears could be down
to third-string RB
The Associated Press

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Chicago Bears running back Jeremy Langford (33) suffered an ankle injury in Sundays loss to Dallas. If he is out Sunday,
Chicago will turn to third-string back Jordan Howard.

After playing half a game of solid

football for the third straight week,
the Chicago Bears are searching for
a way to play the full 60 minutes.
Doing it with a lineup that fluctuates almost daily because of injuries
is the tricky part for Chicago after its
second straight 0-3 start.
Really, in all three phases, I
think theres been some positives,
coach John Fox said. I dont think
weve put a complete game together
by any stretch. I think thats evident.
Whether its the run game, the run
defense, the pass game, the pass
defense, obviously none of its been
good enough.
No 0-3 team has made the playoffs
since 1998, and the Bears are talking more about improvement than
becoming a playoff team as they prepare to host Detroit on Sunday.

Playing against Dallas without

quarterback Jay Cutler (thumb
sprain), the Bears started veteran
Brian Hoyer and fell behind 24-3 by
halftime. They outscored Dallas in
the second half of a 31-17 defeat.
It was the second straight lopsided loss in a prime-time game for the
Bears, who fell Sept. 19 to Philadelphia 29-14.
You cant continue to not play
well and, for lack of a better word, be
embarrassed on national TV, tight
end Zach Miller said. But I felt like
coming out in the second half, its
there. Everybody played hard and
continued to fight until the whistle
blew.
Injuries have been factors in the
inconsistent play, and not just Cutlers. A patchwork offensive line
and now a nicked-up running backs
corps have made the running game
spotty.
Everybody has to elevate their
play and be better for the entire

team, Miller said. Thats professional football and how it

goes.
Third running back Jordan
Howard took over after an
ankle injury to starter Jeremy
Langford and gained 45 yards
on nine carries, but that highlighted the ground attack. Fox
wouldnt commit to Howard
for Sundays game at Soldier
Field, but might not have much
choice with second running
back KaDeem Carey plagued
by a hamstring.
The Bears on Sunday had
to activate Raheem Mostert after signing him to the practice
squad last week. Fox acknowledged Mostert isnt exactly a
household name here in Chicago.
The injury problem has been
more apparent on defense.
Safety
Harold
JonesQuartey suffered a concussion
Sunday and is in the concussion protocol. Safety Adrian
Amos had just returned from
a concussion for the game with
Dallas.
Linebacker Danny Trevathan (thumb), nose tackle
Eddie Goldman (ankle) and
cornerback Kyle Fuller (knee)

remain out. Fuller hasnt

played since August.
Weve got a couple five-star
guys down, linebacker Jerrell
Freeman said. But guys have
to come in, step up.
I kind of take it personal
when the young guys come
in and they mess up or something and Im out there. Ive
got to take that personal. I feel
like thats on me, too. Getting
those guys ready, getting them
comfortable, Ive got to take responsibility.
While the defense struggled
against the run, it also had
problems stopping two straight
rookie quarterbacks in Philadelphias Carson Wentz and
Dallas Dak Prescott.
The defense also gave up
199 rushing yards to Dallas.
Teams have been doing a
really good job with the young
quarterbacks and simplifying
the game plans for them, the
last two weeks for us, in particular, getting the ball out fairly
quick, linebacker Willie Young
said. In some situations we
need to get the rush working
with the coverage, and viceversa.
When you look at it, (the
Cowboys) rushed for 200 yards.
We have to control the running
game first before we can have
fun in the backfield.

NFLs top defense proves why in Week 3

Vikings average 5 sacks per contest
The Associated Press

The defense that Mike

Zimmer has deliberately
built since he became
Minnesotas head coach
has been gradually ascending into one of the
leagues best.
The
Vikings
have
sure begun this season
with a bang. For the second straight game, they
turned an NFL MVP into
a flustered, ineffective
quarterback.
The defense racked up
eight sacks and three interceptions of Carolinas
Cam Newton in the 22-10
victory over the defending
NFC champion Panthers
on Sunday. It was a resounding response by the
Vikings (3-0) after having
to put running back Adrian Peterson and left tackle Matt Kalil on injured reserve earlier in the week.
We feel like we can

be one of the best ever to

wear purple. Thats not
taking away from the guys
who wore purple before
us, but we hold ourselves
to that standard, defensive end Brian Robison
said.
The eight sacks were
the most by the Vikings in
a road game since Dec. 28,
2003, at Arizona. Newton,
the most valuable player
in 2015, fared even worse
than Green Bays Aaron
Rodgers, the award winner in 2014, did the week
before when the Vikings
beat the Packers 17-14.
The Vikings lead the
league with a plus-8 turnover margin. They have a
league-high 15 sacks for a
whopping 116 yards. Philadelphia is the next closest team with a total of 72
sack yards.

is in a front four thats one of the

deepest in the league, led by Everson Griffen, who had three sacks
at Carolina. The heart rests with
young linebackers Anthony Barr
and Eric Kendricks, the handpicked high draft picks who run
Zimmers patented Double-A-gap
blitz scheme.
There are so many athletic, versatile players throughout the defensive lineup that the Vikings are
able to apply a pass rush from all
corners of the field, making up for
it with sound coverage beneath it.
Rodgers, who has one of the keenest senses of pocket awareness
in the NFL, said he didnt see the
pressure on any of the three times
he fumbled last week. Newton
sounded even more baffled.
These guys are all pretty good
players, Zimmer said. Its hard
to really confuse guys anymore.
We try to do our best and, really, I
know people are saying that its me
against the guy or that guy. Weve
got good players. These guys execute the things we try to get them
to do. Its a players game, and
these guys have been executing
and doing a nice job. I cant go out
there and cover a guy or rush a
guy or anything like that. It really
has nothing to do with me.
