New Product Levels

New products enable all functionalities and multiple applications. However, they are still a single product
or a single task, and therefore only allow access to each application sequentially, but not simultaneously.
For example, if you have a single ANSYS Mechanical Enterprise license available, you can perform a
Mechanical APDL solution, but you would not be able to use SpaceClaim Direct Modeler until the
solution is complete.
The HPC capabilities for each of the solvers remain as they were in previous releases. The number of
cores allowed to be used by the solver without any HPC licenses is 2 (DMP or SMP) for the Mechanical
APDL solver, 1 for the Rigid Body Dynamics solver, 1 for the Explicit solver, and 1 for the Aqwa solver.
If you are running a previous release of ANSYS products with the Release 17.2 licensing manager, you
will notice that some additional features have been made available to your earlier product. Although
these new features are available and can be used, the previous releases will not contain the full set of
features of the new product levels.

many new features and enhancements. Areas where you will find changes and new capabilities include
the following:
1.1. Incompatibilities and Changes in Product Behavior from Previous Releases
1.2. General Enhancements
1.3. Platform Enhancements
1.4. Geometry Enhancements
1.5. Contact and Connection Enhancements
1.6. Mesh Enhancements

1.11. Results Enhancements

1.1. Incompatibilities and Changes in Product Behavior from Previous

Releases
Release 17.2 includes several new features and enhancements that result in product behaviors that
differ from previous releases. These behavior changes are presented below.
Solution Object Property Name Change. Under the Post Processing category of the Solution object, the
property "Calculate Beam Section Results" has been renamed "Beam Section Results."
Specifying Named Selections using Worksheet Criteria. The Worksheet used to specify Named Selections
is now, by default, displayed below the Geometry window so that you can view your geometry while simultaneously working with Named Selection worksheet entries.
For Explicit Dynamics analyses, parallel solution on clusters using the Windows HPC Jobscheduler is no
longer officially supported due to unstable behavior.

1.2. General Enhancements

The following general enhancements have been made at Release 17.2:
Selecting Nodes and Elements by IDs. Mechanical now provides a graphical interface dialog that enables
you to select mesh nodes and elements by entering their ID. This feature also provides an option to create
Named Selections for your selected nodes or elements.
Selection Utilities Toolbar. Mechanical now provides a new toolbar to facilitate the manipulation of entity
selections: Selection Utilities. The options of this toolbar enable you to quickly make selections of different
geometric entities based on the active selection of a different entity type. The toolbars functionality uses
ANSYS ACT. The relevant python modules (selection.py and toolbar.py) are available for review in
the install folder: aisol/DesignSpace/DSPages/Python.

Release 17.2 - SAS IP, Inc. All rights reserved. - Contains proprietary and confidential information
of ANSYS, Inc. and its subsidiaries and affiliates.

Mechanical Application Release Notes

Named Selections of Entities Shared Across Bodies. Mechanical has a new Worksheet Criteria: Shared
Across Bodies. Its options include Yes and No enabling you to generate Named Selections for faces, edges,
or vertices that you share or do not share across bodies.
Sorting the Tree Outline. The Tree Filter Toolbar contains a new option, Sort Ascending, that, when selected,
sorts objects in alphanumeric order. This is primarily associated with lower level objects. That is, parent objects
such as Geometry, Coordinate Systems, Connections, etc. are not sorted but their child objects are. For example, if you have a large number of contact regions, the application sorts them according to alphanumeric
precedence.
Group Tree Objects
You can now group all of the child objects in the Named Selection folder using the Group All Similar
Children option.
The F9 key, that hides bodies, is now supported for groups under the Geometry object.
The Delete key can now be used to delete selected groups and their children.

1.3. Platform Enhancements

The following operating system platform enhancements have been made at Release 17.2:
Substructuring Analysis. The Substructuring feature of Mechanical is now supported on the Linux platform.

1.4. Geometry Enhancements

The following geometry enhancements have been made at Release 17.2:
Distributed Mass. Mechanical now enables you to apply Distributed Masses to edges of your model.

1.5. Contact and Connection Enhancements

The following contact and connection enhancements have been made at Release 17.2:
End Releases. Mechanical now enables you to specify two or more edges on a vertex when defining
an End Release. In prior releases, only a single edge could be released from a vertex.
New Constraint Type Options. Two new Constraint Type options have been added to the Advanced
category for Contact Regions: Projected, Displacement Only and Distributed, Normal Only. These
new constraint options enable you to further control the multipoint constraints on Contact Regions
now involving solid bodies. In addition, the option names, but not the functions, of the following
Constrain Type options have changed.

Previous Option Name

New Option Name

Results Enhancements
Remote Point Application. The new property, Pilot Node APDL Name, is now available for Remote
Points. This optional property enables you to create an APDL parameter (in the input file) and assign
its value to the pilot node number of the Remote Point. This facilitates easy programmatic identification

5.2.1. Performance Improvements

For Release 17.1, there has been an emphasis on improvements in performance. The modeling ply update
has been reworked. The handling of the Fabric option Ignore for Postprocessing has been adapted
as well. Both changes yield significant reductions in update time for large models.

5.2.2. Variable Offset Selection Rule

The Variable Offset Selection Rule has been fully incorporated into ACP. Previously this selection rule
was available as an ACP add-on. This selection rule is an advance version of the Tube Selection Rule,
combined with Ply Tapering. The Variable Offset Selection Rule allows you to select elements at varying
offsets from an Edge Set. If the same selection rule is applied to multiple Modeling Plies, a tapering can
also be defined. The offsets are defined using Look-up Tables and can be measured directly or along a
curvature.

5.2.3. Enhancements to Python User Interface

The access to model information through the Python user interface has been extended. The mesh_query
function now allows you to directly and quickly access model information such as elemental area,
volume, or weight.

5.2.4. CAD Geometry Handling

CAD Geometries which are imported directly into ACP are transferred to the Workbench Project file
structure. This removes any absolute file paths and makes sharing of ACP projects more stable. For
more information, see CAD Geometries.

5.2.5. Unified Mechanical Postprocessing Engine

Composite failure postprocessing is now available in Mechanical as well as ACP-Post. For more information, see Composite Failure Tool.

5.2.6. Text Labels for User-Defined Plots

1.2. Supported Platforms for ANSYS Fluent 17.2
1.3. New Limitations in ANSYS Fluent 17.2
1.4. Resolved Issues and Limitations
1.5. Updates Affecting Code Behavior

1.1. New Features in ANSYS Fluent 17.2

New features available in ANSYS Fluent 17.2 are listed below. Where appropriate, references to the relevant section in the User's Guide are provided.
User Interface
You can use the mouse scroll-wheel to zoom in / out in the graphics window.
Data Import and Export
It is now possible to export surface data to the RadTherm format while running Fluent in parallel.
Solver-Meshing
For rigid body motion in transient dynamic mesh simulations, it is now possible in certain cases
to define a set of properties for the six degree of freedom (six DOF) solver through the Six DOF
Properties dialog box, instead of having to create a user-defined function (UDF). This simplifies
the process, especially for one degree of freedom translations or rotations. For details, see Setting
Rigid Body Motion Attributes for the Six DOF Solver and Rigid Body Motion.
Overset meshes are now compatible with hybrid initialization. Note that if you plan to take advantage of this compatibility, it is recommended that you first enable the least squares interpolation method using the following Scheme command, as this method produces a better hybrid
initialized velocity field compared to the default interpolation method: (rpsetvar
'ost/interpolation-method 1).
Models
Combustion and Species Transport
For the Relaxation to Chemical Equilibrium model, you can now use a user-defined function to specify
the characteristic time at each cell. (DEFINE_RELAX_TO_EQUILIBRIUM)
Add-Ons
For the PEMFC model, the enhancements include:
the ability to include a gas channel dynamic head in the liquid water flux calculations at GDL/Channel
interface

Fluent
the ability to specify Leverett function coefficients
the ability to model the diffusivity of water content using either Wu et al. or Wang and Wang formulation
General
ANSYS ACT is now available in Fluent. See Customizing Fluent in the Fluent User's Guide for additional
information.
Support for the Fluent License Manager has been extended to version 17.2, though it will not be supported in version 18.0 and later releases. The purpose of this extension is to provide time for those still
using it to migrate and upgrade to the ANSYS, Inc. License Manager.

1.2. Supported Platforms for ANSYS Fluent 17.2

Information about past, present, and future operating system and platform support is viewable via the
ANSYS website.

1.3. New Limitations in ANSYS Fluent 17.2

The following is a list of new or recently discovered limitations known to exist in ANSYS Fluent 17.2.
Where possible, suggested workarounds are provided.
Models
For the evaporating species, the following limitations exist for definitions of Specific Heat, Viscosity and
Thermal Conductivity material properties when the Temperature Averaging Coefficient or the Composition Averaging Coefficient is defined with a constant value other than 1 for a Droplet particle
or Multicomponent particle material:
The user-defined method is not supported and should not be used.
For the non- and partially- premixed models, the evaporating species properties are not saved
with the case file and must be re-entered after the case file is read.
Solver-Numerics
Beginning in version 17.0, the warped-face gradient correction (WFGC) is not supported with shell
conduction if the ability to define multi-layer shells has been disabled through the define/models/shell-conduction/multi-layer-shell text command.
For a complete list of known limitations, including those that exist from previous releases, refer to Known
Limitations in ANSYS Fluent 17.2 in the Fluent Getting Started Guide.

1.4. Resolved Issues and Limitations

Release 17.2 addresses many issues and limitations that have existed in previous releases of ANSYS
Fluent, including the following:
Adjoint Add-on Module
Starting in version 17.0, mass-flow inlets and pressure inlets are now supported with the adjoint
solver.

Updates Affecting Code Behavior

1.5. Updates Affecting Code Behavior

This section contains a comprehensive list of the code changes implemented in ANSYS Fluent 17.2 that
may affect the output generated by the previous release.

Note
Text that is in bold font represents key words that may facilitate your search for the
changes in code behavior.
Solver-Numerics
Corrections have been made to ensure accurate results when the warped-face gradient correction
(WFGC) is used in a case with shell conduction; this may result in changes compared to previous
versions. Note that as described previously, this combination of settings is only supported if the
ability to define multi-layer shells has not been disabled through the define/models/shellconduction/multi-layer-shell text command.
Solver-Meshing
The default partitioning method for overset meshing in parallel has been changed to Metis. This
matches the default automatic partitioning method for Fluent generally, so you no longer have
to manually reset the automatic partitioning method before reading in the mesh for an overset
case in order to avoid repartitioning during initialization.
A fix has been introduced to ensure that dynamic mesh zones with rigid body motion move as
intended when the relative motion is set to zero.
Zone motion previews (for rigid body or user-defined motion) have been corrected.
For six degrees of freedom (DOF) solver cases that constrain angular motion and use the default
second-order solver, a fix has been introduced to ensure that the angular velocity is calculated
correctly.
Turbulence
Changes have been made so that the Stress-Based Eddy Simulation (SBES) model now works
correctly when the Dynamic Smagorinsky model is selected for the LES mode. Previously, the
solver delivered zero LES subgrid eddy viscosity in the LES mode of SBES.
Heat Transfer
A fix has been introduced to ensure that the macro-level heat rejection updates correctly when
the minimum heat capacity rate is zero.
When the shell conduction model is enabled for internal coupled wall zones with multiple layers
and each layer has a different material specified, more accurate results may be produced compared
to previous releases.
Reacting Flow
A correction has been made to the calculation of the chemical reaction heat source. This correction
may result in improved solutions for multiphase simulations compared to version 15.0 or later.

Release 17.2 - SAS IP, Inc. All rights reserved. - Contains proprietary and confidential information
of ANSYS, Inc. and its subsidiaries and affiliates.

21

Fluent
Discrete Phase Model
For two-way coupled unsteady particle tracking without turbulent dispersion, a fix has been introduced
to ensure that initial particle states are not overwritten during postprocessing. For such situations, even
if time steps are calculated after graphical postprocessing or file export of unsteady particles has been
done, a DPM summary will now report correct Initial and Change data, and some particle laws (for
example, for wet combusting particles) will produce more adequate results.
Eulerian Multiphase Models
A fix has been introduced for Multiphase cases using the User-Defined Real Gas model for one of the
phases, so that the molecular weight of the other phases is no longer overwritten by that defined in
the UDRGM functions. As a result of the fix, the ideal-gas law now correctly computes the density of
any phase other than the real-gas.
A fix has been introduced to the Vant Hoff correlation for the Henrys law coefficients. This will result
in improved solution for multiphase flow simulations with the species mass transfer model compared
to the previous releases.
Fluent in Workbench
When you import a case and data file, there is an additional prompt that asks if you would like to immediately generate an interpolation (.ip) file.
Add-Ons
For the Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) add-on module, treatment of boundary conditions for the potential method has been improved to produce more accurate results compared with the previous releases..

Chapter 2: CFX Release Notes

The following sections contain release information for Release 17.2 of ANSYS CFX.
2.1. Supported Platforms
2.2. New Features and Enhancements
2.3. Incompatibilities
2.4. Resolved Issues and Limitations

2.1. Supported Platforms

Platform/OS levels that are supported in the current release are posted on the ANSYS website.

2.2. New Features and Enhancements

This section lists features and enhancements that are new in Release 17.2 of ANSYS CFX.
There is improved modeling for high-lift devices. For details, see "High Lift Modification" in Turbulence:
Option in the CFX-Pre User's Guide.
When importing ANSYS Meshing files (.cmdb or .dsdb) into ANSYS CFX-Pre, there is a new option to
handle how contacts are read. For details, see the description of the Read Method in Contact Detection
Settings in the CFX-Pre User's Guide.
To improve reliability, the options -affwidth=numa -affcycle=socket have been removed from
all Platform MPI start methods. This may have a performance impact. For details, see section "Using IBM
Platform MPI (Message Passing Interface Library)" in Configuring High Performance Computing Guide.

2.3. Incompatibilities
This section describes the operational changes, the procedural changes (actions that have to be done
differently in this release to get an outcome available in Release 17.1), and the support changes (functionality that is no longer supported) in Release 17.2 of ANSYS CFX.
The CFX-Solver executable names have changed. The default executable is no longer named differently for
each MPI implementation (for example, solver-impi.exe, solver-pcmpi.exe). Instead, a single
executable (solver-mpi.exe) is used with all supported MPI implementations.
An implication of this is that, for Windows systems, any User Fortran shared libraries must be rebuilt
using the cfx5mkext utility.
One benefit of this change is that, on Windows, a single User Fortran shared library can be used with
all supported MPI implementations. It is no longer necessary to modify cfx5mkext.ccl and compile
different User Fortran shared libraries for different MPI implementations.
On Linux systems, User Fortran is unaffected by these changes.

2.4. Resolved Issues and Limitations

This section lists issues and limitations that have existed in previous releases, but that have been resolved
and removed in Release 17.2 of ANSYS CFX.
A bug that could lead to wrong monitor values for Reynolds stress components has been fixed.
A bug that could lead to wrong boundary heat fluxes at walls with specified mass fraction sources has been
fixed.
A contact resistance interface model for the solid part of a porous solid interface is now included.
The combination of the SSG Reynolds Stress model with an Opening boundary condition and the Flamelet/BVM model is now supported.
The normalization of residuals for the fluid energy equation has been fixed for cases including conjugate
heat transfer with solids.
Monitor Surfaces can now be constructed using multiple User Surface locations.
Data on Monitor Surfaces is now displayed with the correct ranges in CFD-Post.
A bug causing CEL callback functions to be evaluated in the wrong order has been fixed. This bug caused
the CFX-Solver to be interrupted on the wrong time step.
The Monitor Surface output is no longer disrupted by setting the Output Frequency option to None (which
prevents results files from being written).
Monitor Surface data is now written to .smn files in steady-state, and the data retention CCL controls now
distinguish between these files and scheduled backup results.
Intermediate results files should now be deleted (if requested) even if they were temporarily locked by
postprocessing actions from CFD-Post.
Combining momentum sources, buoyancy forces and second order Rhie-Chow is now supported.
Exporting data in CGNS format now works with the large problem options.
All variables scheduled to be written from Monitor Surfaces now appear in the variables list in CFD-Post.
Solution restart interpolation has been improved for cases involving wall films.

Chapter 1: Geometry Release Notes

This section summarizes the new features in DesignModeler Release 17.2:
Reader Mode into SpaceClaim
It is now possible to read DesignModeler agdb files into SpaceClaim Direct Modeler without needing
a DesignModleler license. By default, DesignModeler will check out its own license to read the file, but
if no license is available it can still read the model data without the license in most cases. This is only
applicable when importing DesignModeler geometry into SpaceClaim.
CAD Parameter Promotion
CAD parameters imported via the CAD plug-ins into DesignModeler can now be promoted to design
parameters in the project schematic, regardless of whether their parameter names are unique. Previous
versions of DesignModeler allowed promotion of uniquely named parameters only.
For more information, see Menus> File Menu> Attach to Active CAD Geometry> Attach Properties>
Parameter Key Property in the DesignModeler User's Guide.
Improved Parameter Manager Evaluations
DesignModeler's parameter manager has been improved such that sketch dimension assignments belonging to the same plane are now evaluated together, rather than independently as was done in prior
releases. This improves the robustness for design parameter updates involving sketch dimensions.

If you resume a legacy database into Release 17.2, meshing size controls are resumed with new local size
functions and local defeature sizes as follows:
If the global size function is set to Curvature, Curvature and Proximity, or Proximity, and the local size
control's Behavior option is set to Soft, the local size function is set to Curvature when the model is resumed.
If the global size function is set to Curvature, Curvature and Proximity, or Proximity, and the local size
control's Behavior option is set to Hard, the local size function is set to Uniform with Behavior set to
Hard when the model is resumed.
If the global size function is set to Uniform, the local size function is set to Uniform when the model is
resumed.
If the global size function is set to Adaptive, local size functions are not applicable.
The local defeature size is set to 0 or default with the default value in parentheses when the model is resumed. The default value is inherited from the smaller of these two settings:

Chapter 3: Remote Solve Manager (RSM)

In this release of Remote Solve Manager, changes and enhancements include:
3.1. New Features and Enhancements
3.2. Resolved Issues and Limitations

3.1. New Features and Enhancements

There are no new features or enhancements in ANSYS RSM Release 17.2.

3.2. Resolved Issues and Limitations

The -aas option has been enabled for the CFX solver, enabling the display of convergence monitors in
EKM when a CFX component update is submitted to an EKM Portal from Workbench.
When submitting batch jobs to RSM from EKM, RSM is better able to handle jobs with a large number of
input files (1000+). Previously such a job may have failed with a 'maximum recursion depth exceeded' error.
When using a non-English version of Windows, some groups or reserved names are localised, such as the
built-in everyone account. In previous versions this caused the XmlRpc port reservation to fail, and EKM

Chapter 4: ANSYS EKM Release Notes

ANSYS Engineering Knowledge Manager (EKM) 17.2 consists of EKM, the EKM server product, and its
companion web application. The following sections provide an overview of new features and resolved
issues in ANSYS EKM 17.2:
4.1. New Features and Enhancements
4.2. Issues Resolved in this Release
4.3. Issues and Limitations

4.1. New Features and Enhancements

There are no new features or enhancements in ANSYS EKM Release 17.2.

4.2. Issues Resolved in this Release

Below are the major issues that have been resolved since the release of 17.1.
When executing a batch job template, permission checks complete successfully when a script is run, and
no longer result in an "AccessControlException" error.
Convergence monitors are now shown for CFX solutions submitted to EKM from Workbench.
When submitting batch jobs, RSM is better able to handle jobs with a large number of input files (1000+).
Previously such a job may have failed with a 'maximum recursion depth exceeded' error.
When using a non-English version of Windows, some groups or reserved names are localised, such as the
built-in everyone account. In previous versions this caused the XmlRpc port reservation to fail, and EKM
was not able to connect to a machine running a non-English version of Windows. This has been fixed in this
release.

4.3. Issues and Limitations

All issues and limitations known at the time of release are listed in Appendix B in the EKM Users Guide.

Chapter 5: DesignXplorer
The following enhancements have been added to ANSYS DesignXplorer 17.2:

Response Surface Interface Enhancements

For the Response Surface component, the Outline, Table, and Chart views are reorganized, making
it easier to find important content. For example, separate tables display refinement points, response
points, and verification points. For more information, see Response Surface Component Reference.

Genetic Aggregation Performance Enhancements

Algorithms for the Genetic Aggregation response surface are refactored, resulting in faster, more efficient
resolutions when determining the type of response surface best suited to each output parameter in
your problem. For more information, see Genetic Aggregation.

Additional Response Surface Export Options

Context menu options are added for exporting a full response surface as an independent reduced-order
model (DX-ROM) that can be reused in other environments. From the Response Surface component,
you can now use any of the following options:
Right-click in the Outline view and select Export Response Surface.
Right-click in the Chart view and select Export Response Surface.
Click the Export Response Surface button in the toolbar.
For more information, see Exporting Response Surfaces.

Clarification of Export to CSV Options

To clarify data export functionality, the previous Export Data as CSV context option has been relabeled
Export Table Data as CSV for tables and Export Chart Data as CSV for charts.
