Why do we need the

ASI 2020 Vision?

On July 20, 2020

Dr. A. Jean Ayres
would have been
100 years old

05/11/2014

Why do we need the

ASI 2020 Vision?
What other occupational therapist contributed
more to theory and practice in the OT profession?
Which professional did more to lay a foundation for
scholarship and standards of excellence in
practice?
Who contributed more to understanding and
helping people with sensory differences?

How can we ensure that the work

Dr. Ayres started will endure and
evolve?

Ayres Sensory Integration will have a strong,

international presence with demonstrated
scholarship, means for valid, comprehensive
assessment and pathways for training to ensure the
ongoing development, standards of excellence and
eective implementation of this important work.

What are the
key ingredients?
Scholarship
Clarity in assessment for focused
intervention
Standards in education and
training

05/11/2014

Goal #1
Promoting Scholarship in ASI: Dr. Ayres was
committed to the scientific method in building
her theory and ensuring ongoing evolution of
this important work.
Goal: 100 papers that further the
understanding and evidence for ASI, will be
published in peer reviewed journals (start
date January 2013) (must reference or be
consistent with Ayres Sensory Integration)

This summer, over 90

volunteers from over 35
countries read and
reviewed papers from
peer reviewed journals
about ASI

Another 8-10 papers will

be reviewed this fall-
so by early 2015
we will likely have 20+
papers listed
at least 20%
of the 2020 goal of 100!

Goal #2
Ensuring Effective Intervention through
Comprehensive Assessment in ASI:

Goal: a set of tests with demonstrated

reliability and validity will be
developed and internationally
normed in 100 countries and made
available at low or no cost.

Dr. Ayres developed a highly

valid and reliable methods for
evaluating comprehensive
sensory integrative functions
that have stood the
test of time.

We value these tests and

encourage ongoing training in
their use, as well as in theory
and practice in ASI.
THE MORE PEOPLE TRAINED
AND USING THE SIPT-
THE BETTER!

However, there is also need to look

toward the future and to develop a
valid and reliable set of tests of key
sensory motor functions that is
accessible to therapists all over the
world so that they can identify,
understand and treat sensory
integrative dysfunction.

What will the EASI

look like?

The aims include:

Assess all the key constructs of ASI
Minimal influence of language, cultural
and experiential factors
Hoping for FREE access-open source
forms, norms and materials
Highly discriminative-feasible to give in 1
to 11/2 hours
Standardized in 100 countries
Will initially focus on ages 3-12-younger
and older later?

13

05/11/2014

Timeline

2014-Initial test items developed

2015-Field and pilot testing-item analysis

2016-Organization and training for normative data
collection
2017-Normative data collection; validity and reliability
studies
2018 Validity and reliability analysis and item analysis
(norms) studies and publications
2019 Writing manual and papers
2020 Test available July 2020

How will this possibly happen???

14

05/11/2014

Will you help?

15

05/11/2014

If only 10 therapists in 100

countries tested 10
children each
we would have norms on
10,000 children!

Goal #3

Facilitating ongoing development

and implementation of ASI:
Dr. Ayres mentored a generation
of therapists, educators and
researchers who have followed
the road map she left for
implementation of ASI.

It is time to ensure that leadership

and pathways to excellence in the
ASI approach are in place for
future generations.

17

05/11/2014

Goal 3
Sensory integration training that
includes clearly dened pathways
for demonstrating competency in
ASI will be developed and
available in 100 countries.
