Jamia Hamdard believe that:
Health is a state of well-being that enables a person to lead a
psychologically, socially and economically productive life.
Health is a right of all the people. Individuals, families and
communities have a responsibility towards maintaining their
health.
Nursing contributes to the health services in a vital and
significant way in the health care delivery system. It
recognizes national health goals and is committed to participate
in the implementation of National Health policies and programs.
It aims at identifying to participate in the implementation of
National Health policies and programmes. It aims at identifying
health needs of the people, planning and providing quality care
in collaboration with other health professionals and community
groups.
Nursing is based on values of caring, and aims to help
individuals to attain independence in self-care. It necessitates
development of compassion and understanding of human behaviour
among its practitioners to provide care with respect and dignity
and protect the rights of individuals & groups.
Scope of nursing practice encompasses provision of promotive,
preventive, curative and rehabilitive aspects of care to people
across their life span in wide variety of health care settings.
Practice of nursing is based upon application of basic concepts
and principles derived from the physical, biological and
behavioural sciences, medicine and nursing.
Undergraduate nursing program is broad based education within an
academic framework specifically directed to the development of
critical thinking skills, competencies and standards required
for practice of professional nursing and midwifery as envisaged
in National Health Policy 2002.
The teachers have the responsibility to be role models and
create learning environment that enables students to acquire
inquiry driven, self directed learning and foster an attitude of
life long learning.

ADMISSION & Examination RULES
for the degree of
B. Sc. NURSING

1. Programme: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B. Sc. Nursing).


It shall be a fulltime regular course.
During an academic year, a candidate shall be enrolled only for one programme
of study and shall not appear in any other examination of this or any other
University.

2. Medium of Instruction and Examination: English


3. Eligibility for admission: This course is for females only. A
candidate seeking admission to this course must have:

(a) passed 10+2 examination from Central Board of Secondary Education, or any
other examination recognized by Jamia Hamdard as equivalent thereto, with at
least 50% marks in the aggregate of Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and must
have passed in each of these subjects.
(b) qualified the admission test/interview conducted by Jamia Hamdard.
(c) attained the age of 17 years on or before the first day of October of the
year of admission.
(d) have the ability to communicate in Hindi and Urdu.
(e) have sound health.

4. Course structure
The Faculty of Nursing follows the syllabus prescribed by Indian
Nursing Council, which has been duly approved by Academic
Council of Jamia Hamdard. The distribution of hours in classroom
instruction and supervised Nursing practice in various subjects
is given below. The course contents are given in the Syllabus.

Note:
1. Anatomy and Physiology-Question paper will consist of Section A
Anatomy of 37 marks and B Physiology should be of 38 marks.
2. Nutrition and Biochemistry andQuestion paper will consist of Section
A Nutrition of 45 marks and Section B of Biochemistry of 30 marks.
3. Pharmacology, genetics, pathology: Section A of Pharmacology with 38
marks, Section B of Pathology of 25 and Genetics with 12 marks.
4. Nursing Research & Statistics-Nursing Research should be of 50 marks
and Statistics of 25 marks.
5. Minimum pass marks shall be 40% for English only.
6. Theory and Practical exams for Introduction to computer to be
conducted as College exam and marks to be sent to the University for
inclusion in the marks sheet.
7. Minimum pass marks shall be 50% in each of the Theory and Practical
papers separately.
8. A candidate must have minimum of 80% attendance (irrespective of the
kind of absence) in theory and practical in each subject for appearing
for examination.

9. A candidate must have 100% attendance in each of the


practical areas before award of degree.
10.A candidate has to pass in theory and practical exam
separately in each of the paper.
11.If a candidate fails in either theory or practical paper
he/she has to re-appear for both the papers (Theory &
Practical)
12.Maximum number of attempts permitted for each paper is 3
including first attempt.
13.A candidate failing in more then two subjects will not be
promoted to next year.
14.Candidate shall not be admitted to the subsequent higher
examination unless the candidate has passed the previous
examination.
15.Maximum number of candidates for practical examination
should not exceed 20 per day.
16.All practical examinations must be held in the respective
clinical areas.
17.One internal and One external examiners should jointly
conduct practical examination for each student.
18.An examiner should be a lecturer or above in a college of
nursing with M.Sc. (N) in concerned subject and minimum of
3 years of teaching experience. To be an examiner for
nursing foundations course faculty having M.Sc. (N) with
any specialty shall be considered.
7. Internal Assessment
(a) For the purpose of internal assessment, there will be two
written Sessional tests in each academic year, both in Theory
and Practicals.
(b) Each test will be of 2 hours duration. These will be
conducted by the respective teachers as per a notified
schedule during the regular teaching slots. There will be no
provision for special or additional internal assessment
tests.
(c) The answer books of the Sessional tests shall be shown to
the students and taken back with their signatures on these.
The Sessional test answerbooks shall be retained in the
Department till the end of the academic term.
(d)The students shall be required to maintain the observation
visit reports/ other such assessments, including diary, for
assessment by the teachers concerned in each case. Besides
the class tests, marks will be given for day to day work and
assignments in the following:
(a) Case presentation
(b) Nursing Care plan
(c) Case study
(d) Seminar
(e) Daily Diary
(f) Return demonstrations
(g) Monthly clinical evaluation

(h) Maintenance of Midwifery Case book


(i) Practice Practical exams.
(e) A regular record of Theory and Practical class work and
examinations
conducted
in
an
academic
year
shall
be
maintained by the teachers for each student.
(f) Twenty five marks shall be awarded for Internal Assessment
in theory papers. The candidates must secure a minimum of 50%
marks in each paper in internal assessment otherwise the
student shall not be allowed to take up the annual
examination. For subsidiary/ qualifying papers, a student
must secure a minimum of 35% marks. Fifty marks shall be
awarded in Practical subjects as given in the Scheme of
Examination.
(g) The final sessional marks awarded by the teacher on internal
assessment will be submitted to the Principal/Dean, who shall
forward the same to the Registrar within 10 days of the last
Sessional test held. These would also be displayed on the
Notice Board.
8. Attendance
(a) All students must attend every lecture and practical class.
However, to account for late joining or other such
contingencies, the attendance requirement for appearing in
the examinations shall be a minimum of 75% of the classes
actually held.
(b) In order to maintain the attendance record of a particular
course, a roll call will be taken by the teacher in every
scheduled lecture and practical class. For the purposes of
attendance, every scheduled practical class will count as one
attendance unit, irrespective of the number of contact hours.
(c) The teacher incharge will consolidate the attendance record
for the lectures and practicals for each term. Attendance on
account of participation in the prescribed functions of NCC,
NSS, Inter-university sports, educational tours/field work
shall be credited to the aggregate, provided the attendance record,
duly countersigned by the Officer incharge, is sent to the Dean of Faculty
within two weeks of the function/activity, etc.
(d)

The statements of attendance of students shall be displayed


on the Department Notice Board at the close of each term as
given in the University Calender. A copy of the same shall be
sent to the Head of Department/ Office of Dean of Faculty for
record. Notice displayed on Notice Board shall be deemed to
be a proper notification, and no individual notice shall be
sent to students.
(e) If a student is found to be continuously absent from the
classes without information for a period of 30 days, the
teacher incharge shall report it to the Head of Department/ Dean
for striking off the name of such a student from rolls. Such a student

may, however, apply for readmission within 15 days of the


notice of striking off the name. The request may be
considered by the Dean for readmission. Such a student shall

not be re-admitted after the prescribed period. The readmission


shall be effected on payment of prescribed readmission fees.
(f) A student with less than 75% attendance of the lectures and
practicals separately in each subject/course in an academic
year shall be detained from appearing in the Annual
University examination. The Dean of Faculty concerned may
consider application for the condonation of attendance upto
5% on account of sickness, provided the application for
condonation of attendance, duly certified by a Registered
Medical practitioner/Public Hospital had been submitted
within 5 days from the recovery from illness. Condonation of
attendance on account of any other extenuating circumstances
may also be considered, provided the request is duly
supported by documentary evidence.
(g) A student detained on account of attendance will be readmitted to the same class in the next academic year on
payment of current fees except Enrolment fee, Identity card
fee and Security deposits.
9. Eligibility for admission to Examination
A student seeking admission to the examination to be held at
the end of each academic year must have pursued the course of
study for one academic year, and must have completed the
prescribed attendance requirements. In case of Paper 2, the
candidate shall be required to pass separately in both
sections (theory and practical). Further, a student must pass
the Part I examination within two academic years, and must
complete all the requirements for the degree within the
prescribed span period of seven years.
10. Annual and Supplementary Examinations
a) The Annual and Supplementary examinations shall be held as
per schedule given in the Academic Calender of Jamia Hamdard.
The Supplementary examinations may normally be held after 30
days from the declaration of results of the Annual
examinations.
(b) A candidate who fails to appear at the annual examination or
having appeared in the Annual examination fails to pass in
any subject(s) as prescribed for the examination, may be
allowed to appear in the remaining subjects at the
Supplementary examination.
(c) A candidate will be given a total number of three attempts,
inclusive of the first attempt, to clear the papers in which
he/she fails to qualify (irrespective of the number of such
papers). In exceptionally hard cases, a student may be
considered for grant of one last mercy chance.
(d) Application for mercy chance with proper justification and a
written undertaking given by the student will be examined by
the Dean of the Faculty, and specific recommendations will be
forwarded to the Registrar for getting approval of the
competent authority. The undertaking would be to the effect

that in case he/she does not clear the backlog in this final
attempt, he/she will not have any further claim to continue
the studies and that his/her name may be struck off the
rolls.
(e) The duration of annual examination in theory as well as
practical papers will be 3-hours, unless specified otherwise.
(f) Examiners shall examine students orally during the Practical
examination and take cognizance of their performance when
marking their papers.
(g) A student shall not be declared to have passed the
examination unless he/she secures at least 50% marks in each
of the subjects separately in the theory as well as practical
examinations, including sessional marks. Each theory paper or
practical examination shall be construed as a separate paper.
The pass marks in subsidiary/qualifying subjects shall be
35%.
(h) Ten days vacation shall be given as preparatory holidays
before the commencement of Annual examinations.
(i) The candidates will retain the Internal Assessment of the
previous examination, wherever applicable.
(j) No candidate shall be awarded the B.Sc. degree unless: (i)
she has passed in all the qualifying subjects as stated in
Clause 6 - Scheme of examination; (ii) the total clinical
experience prescribed has been completed before Final year;
and (iii) Compulsory Internship for 2 months has been
completed immediately following the Final examinations.
11. Promotion to next class
(a) All students securing at least 50% marks in each of the
subjects separately in the theory as well as practical
examinations, including sessional marks, shall be promoted to
the next year of study.
(b) A student who fails in one or two subjects (separately in
theory and practicals), and secures at least 50% marks in the
aggregate, may be provisionally promoted to the next higher
class. However, such a student shall have to clear these
subjects in the year to which thus promoted provisionally.
(c) A student who fails in more than two subjects will have to
repeat the year of study and clear it within the prescribed
span period.
(d) A student who has been promoted as per clause (b) above and
fails to clear the backlog in the year to which promoted
provisionally, will be required to rejoin the year to which
the carried over papers belonged, as a regular student.
He/she will be registered only in those subjects in which
he/she could not secure the minimum pass marks of the last
examination. For instance, if a student was provisionally
promoted to II year with a carry over of two papers of I
year, and he does not succeed in clearing the carry over
papers of I year alongwith the regular papers of II year, he

will have to join I year again and register only in the


backlog papers.
(e) Promotion to the next higher class will be considered
subject to rules relating to the maximum period of stay at
the University, viz. passing the first year examination
within two academic years, and successfully completing all
the requirements of the programme of study within seven years
from admission.
12. Classification of Successful Candidates
(a) The result of the successful candidates shall be classified
after declaration of results of the final year examination on
the basis of the aggregate of all subjects, Theory and
Practicals, secured by the candidate in the examinations of
all years, as indicated below:

(b) Candidates securing 75% or above marks in any subject(s) and


have passed in all the subjects in a year in first attempt
shall be declared to have obtained Distinction in that
subject(s).
(c) A student shall be eligible for award of Gold Medal subject
to the following criteria:
i)

He(she) has secured the highest marks in aggregate of


examinations of all the years of the programme of study.
He(she) has obtained a minimum of 60 per cent marks in
the aggregate, as stated in (i) above.

iii) He(she) has passed all examinations, including


qualifying courses, if any, in first attempt.
13. Span Period
Students must pass the Part I examination within two academic
years, and must complete the full course of study within seven
years from their admission to the first year of the course.
14. Other Conditions
(a) Any student who gets married during the tenure of the course
shall not be allowed to continue the study.
(b) A minimum of 6 weeks vacation shall be given each year.

BYE-LAWS ADMISSION & EXAMINATIONS
for the DGNM
1. Programme: Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM)
It shall be a full time regular course.
During an academic year, a candidate shall be enrolled only for
one programme of study and shall not appear in any other
examination of this or any other University.
2. DURATION: Three and half years (3 ).
3. MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION AND EXAMINATION: English
4. ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION: This programme of study in for
females only. A candidate seeking admission to this programme
must have:

other examination recognized by Jamia Hamdard as equivalent
thereto, Preferably with Science Subjects Physics, Chemistry and
Biology and with at least 45% marks in aggregate.
(b) qualified the admission test/interview conducted by Jamia
Hamdard.
(c) the ability to communicate in Hindi and English.
(d) sound health.

6. Scheme of Examination
The distribution of marks for internal assessment and annual
examination for each theory and practical papers during the
three and half years of study is detailed below. The duration
of annual examination in theory as well as practical papers
will be of three hours, unless specified otherwise.
The practical examination would preferably be conducted at the
field / clinical area where she had her practical experience.
There should be Nurse Examiners only, and practical exam
should be conducted in the actual work situation in a Ward or
at the Health Centre or village rather than in a class room.

Number of students shouldnt exceed more than 10-15 when


examined in a day for their practical exam.
Internal and external examiner shall jointly evaluate each
candidate for practical examination.

Practical Examination at the end of the Six month is to be


conducted by the Faculty / College at its own level to assess
clinical skills, ward management & professional trends. Marks
are to be submitted to the university for addition in the
overall result.
7. Internal Assessment
(a) There shall be 25% internal assessment for all theory
papers and 50% internal assessment for all the practicals.
(b)

A regular and periodic assessment for each subject


clinical / field experience is to be carried out.

(c)

There will be two written sessional test in each academic


year each test will be of 2 hours duration. These will be
conducted by the respective teaching slots.

(d)

The answer books of the Sessional tests shall be shown to


the students and taken back with their signatures on these.
The Sessional test answerbooks shall be retained in the
Department for two academic years.

(e)

The students shall be required to maintain the observation


visit reports/ other such assessments, including diary, for
assessment by the teachers concerned in each case. Besides
the class tests, marks will be given for day to day work
and assignments in the following:
(a) Case presentation
(b) Nursing Care plan
(c) Case study
(d) Seminar
(e) Daily Diary
(f) Return demonstrations
(g) Monthly clinical evaluation
(h) Maintenance of Midwifery Case book
(i) Practice Practical exams.

(f)

Regular record of Theory and Practical class is to be


maintained. Task oriented assessment is to be undertaken

Assessment shall be maintained by the teachers for each


student each month. This can be checked by the council /
university.
The
internal
Assessment
marks
shall
be
displayed on the notice board for the information of the
students.
(g)

A candidate must secure a minimum of 50% marks in internal


assessment separately in each theory and practical. To be
successful a student must get 50% marks in the internal as
well as Council or Board Examination of each year.

(h)

For
a
student
who
appears
for
any
supplementary
examination, her / his fresh internal assessment in the
failed subject(s)/ practical(s) is to sent to the Council /
Board.

(i)

Minimum pass mark for English only shall be 35%.

(j)

The sessional test marks awarded by the teacher and the


final marks of internal assessment shall be submitted to
the
Principal/Dean,
who
shall
forward
the
internal
assessment marks to the Registrar 10 days before the annual
examinations. These will also be displayed on the Notice
Board.

(k)

For a student who appears for any supplementary examination


her fresh Internal Assessment in the failed subject (s) /
practical (s) is to be sent to the university examination
cell.

(l)

Each student is required to maintain the record

In addition to above, each student shall maintain a


procedure book and midwifery case book signed by concerned
teacher / supervisor and Principal which is to be presented to
the examiner during the final examination.
The above assignments are to be evaluated by concerned
teachers for the purpose of internal assessment and shall be
presented to the external examination in a compiled form and it
should be duly signed by her and should be stamped as cancelled
after practical examination.
8. Attendance

(a)

All students must attend every lecture and practical class.


However, to account for late joining or other such
contingencies, the attendance requirement for appearing in
the examinations shall be a minimum of 75% of the classes
actually held.

(b)

In order to maintain the attendance record of a particular


course, a roll call will be taken by the teacher in every
scheduled lecture and practical class. For the purposes of
attendance, every scheduled practical class will count as
one attendance unit, irrespective of the number of contact
hours.

(c)

The teacher incharge will consolidate the attendance record


for the lectures and practicals for each term. Attendance
on account of participation in the prescribed functions of
NCC, NSS, Inter-university sports, educational tours/field
work shall be credited to the aggregate, provided the
attendance record, duly countersigned by the Officer
incharge, is sent to the Dean of Faculty within 2 weeks of
the function/activity, etc.

(d)

The statements of attendance of students shall be displayed


by the teacher on the Faculty Notice Board at the end of
each term as given in the University Calender. A copy of
the same shall be sent to the Head of Department/Principal/
Office of Dean of Faculty for record. Notice displayed on
Notice Board shall be deemed to be a proper notification,
and no individual notice shall be sent to students.

(e)

If a student is found to be continuously absent from the


classes without information for a period of 30 days, the
teacher incharge shall report it to the Principal/Dean in
writing. The Principal/Dean shall report it to the
Registrar. Registrar shall issue a notice to such student,
as to why her admission should not be cancelled. The
Registrar shall take a decision on cancellation of
admission within 30 days of issue of this notice. A copy of
the order shall be sent to the student & parents/guardian.

(f)

A student with less than 75% attendance of the lectures and


practicals separately in each subject/course in an academic
year shall be detained from appearing in the Annual
University
examination
respective
subject.
The
Principal/Dean of Faculty may consider application for the
condonation of attendance up to 5% on account of sickness,
provided the application for condonation of attendance,
duly certified by a Registered Medical practitioner/Public
Hospital had been submitted within 5 days from the recovery
from illness. Condonation of attendance on account of any
other extenuating circumstances may also be considered,

A student detained on account of attendance will be readmitted to the same class in the next academic year on
payment of current fees except Enrolment fee, Identity card
fee and Security deposits.

(h)

Candidates will be eligible for he award of diploma only


after completing 100% field duty in the respective field
and on completion of the internship.

9. Eligibility for admission to Examination


(a)

A student seeking admission to the examination to be held


at the end of each academic year must have pursued the
course of study for one academic year, and must have
completed the prescribed attendance requirements of both
theory and practical separately. Her record of practical
experience must be complete and up to date.

10. Annual and Supplementary Examinations


(a)

The Annual and Supplementary examinations shall be held as


per schedule given in the Academic Calendar of Jamia
Hamdard. The Supplementary examinations shall be held
within six months of declaration of as per Indian Nursing
Council Rules.

(b)

Preparatory leave for appearing in the annual examination


will be followed as per university direction.

(c)

If a students fails in one theory paper / practical, she/he


may be allowed to proceed to the next year of study, she /
he
will
sit
for
a
Supplementary
examination
held
subsequently in the failed subject / practical. If she
/
he fails to clear supplementary examination she / he shall
be allowed to sit again along with her next year annual
examination.

(d)

If a student fails in two or more papers or practical she /


he will not be allowed to proceed to the next year. She /
he shall sit for supplementary examination in the failed
subjects / practicals only but shall be eligible for the
next years examination after one academic year from the
date of passing the last examination.

(e)

No candidate of category (s) shall be allowed to proceed to


third year (higher class), unless she / he has passed in
the subjects of the previous year (backlog to the second
year).

(f)

If a student fails in one theory paper / practical


examination of third year, she / he may be allowed to
proceed for internship. She / he will sit for supplementary
examination held subsequently in the tailed subject /
practical.

(g)

If a students fails in two or more papers / practicals


she / he will not be allowed to proceed for internship. She
/ he shall sit for supplementary examination in the failed
subjects / practicals only. A student shall not be allowed
to proceed for internship till he / she clears third year
examination.

11. Promotion to next class


(a)

A student securing at least 50% marks in each of the


subjects separately in the theory as well as practical
examinations, including internal assessment mark, shall be
promoted to the next year of study.

(b)

A student who fails in not more than one paper (theory and
practicals of a subject are separate papers), shall be
promoted to the next higher class. However, such a student
shall have to clear these papers in the supplementary
examinations and / or annual examination of the year to
which she has been promoted.

(c)

A student who fails in more then one papers of year shall


have to appear in the examination of these papers as an exstudent and clear the year within the prescribed span
period. However, if a student chooses to be a regular
student than she has to attend all the classes and shall
have to appear in the sessional tests, practicals with
continuos internal assessment in the concerned subjects,
and shall pay the annual fee.

(d)

Promotion to the next higher class will be considered


subject to rules relating to the maximum period of stay at
the university, viz. passing all, the papers of a year in
three
attempts
and
successfully
completing
all
the
requirements of the programme of study within five years
plus six months of internship from the year of admission,
to first year of he programme.

12.

Leave, Vacation, Holiday


Annual Vacation

10 days
Sick leave will be 10 days per annum, which shall not be
accumulated for the next year.
Preparatory leave as per university calendar.

Total duration of internship period is 26 weeks / 6 month
including 1 week of vacation and 1 week of examination. The
internship period will have field work and classes as per
syllabus

14. Classification of Successful Candidates


(a)

The result of the successful candidates shall be classified


after declaration of results of the final year examination
on the basis of the aggregate of all subjects, Theory and
Practicals, secured by the candidate in the examinations of
all years, as indicated below:

(i)

14. Span Period


Students must pass all the Papers of a year in three attempts
over two academic years, and must complete the full course of
study within five + Six month of internship from their admission
to the first year of the programme.
