-Phones ringing
-Grocery bags crinkling

Sights

Lighting and visibility:

-Very well lit platform outside
-Relatively dimly lit inside of station (entire row of lights off or
burned out inside station)
-Poor visibility into the station from surrounding area
-Only one way to exit the platform, which routes everyone
through the same area

where people stood while waiting for the train

Visual observations:
-Scratched graffiti on window
-No loitering signs inside of station
-Only one bench available inside of the station
-Elevator present and must be activated
-Glass-encased enclosures are present on the platform, but
did not see anyone using these. While they provide excellent soundproofing and insulation from the elements, they
may be too cold to be in during the winter

Covered shelters were underutilitzed.

Even on a colder night.

The warm indoors was the most common

place to wait. The bench was always in use.

Emotional observations
-Feelings of isolation from surroundings with train tracks and
Memorial Dr. separation
-Feelings of unease and discomfort at how old, dim and rundown the inside of the station looks (along with unpleasant
color scheme)

People observations
-Many lone travelers emerge at the top of the escalator;
few travelers appear to be engaged with one another
-People waiting at ticket machine make little attempt to interact with each other
-Despite travelers travelling alone, most are not equipped
with head phones
-Two interactions with us: once from a train passenger and
once from transit officers
-Most people are carrying something: grocery bags, backpacks, briefcases and the occasional rolling luggage. Only
a few people appeared to be empty handed.
-People prefer to enter and exit only through the more
northerly set of doors
-Most people wait inside the station for train, even if it is a
smaller, more crowded space with minimal seating
-Occasional person waiting on platform but only for short
durations and never in the enclosed glass spaces
-Majority of people who do wait at platform walk to the end
