9th International Symposium on Friction Stir Welding,

(9ISFSW)
Huntsville, Alabama 15th-17th May 2012
Despite the difficult global economic situation almost 250 delegates from 23 countries attended this event
in Huntsville, Alabama. This attendance, significantly higher than any previous event was attracted by the
ever increasing interest in FSW, the strength of the technical sessions, an industrial visit the NASAMarshall Flight Space Center and a social event at Jack Daniels.
80 technical papers were delivered on all aspects of FSW technology in excellent facilities provided by the
Von Braun Centre located in the heart of Huntsville. These papers described the advances in tooling
technology, different FSW techniques, joining of different materials and the ever increasing number of
industrial applications. A number of companies also exhibited their products during the symposium.
Delegates also visited Jack Daniels and enjoyed a tour of America's oldest distillery followed by an evening
of Southern hospitality including a BBQ and a spectacular sunset over the town of Lynchburg.
This event was run on behalf of the Friction Stir Welding Licensees Association by TWI, with a great deal of
local assistance from Concurrent Technologies Corporation, NASA and Huntsville University. The morning
after the Symposium over 130 delegates took the opportunity to visit NASA-Marshall Flight Space Center
taking a tour of their facilities which was very informative, engaging and provided the perfect end to event.
The FSW Licensees Association would like to thank all the local supporters with a special mention to Kevin
Colligan. The community of Huntsville put on a great event that will be talked about for years to come.
