Assignment description

Assumption occurs when a person takes something for granted. Most

of the English Teachers continuously assume that students are reluctant to
learning a second language and, this make instructors to be influenced by a
negative feeling and as a these result create a very uncomfortable
environment in the classroom; moreover, this situation about assumption
negative result, could happen unconsciously.
Hence, assumptions are made easily and there are many examples of
them, several made in a positive aspect while others as the one above
mentioned, in a negative aspect; in fact there are various that may have
become myths by now. Like the one mentioned by McLaughlin, B (1984
1985) in his book Second language acquisition in childhood (vols. 1-2) the
more time students spend in a second language context, the quicker they
learn the language, which is exposed as false according to a Canadian
research that clearly shows that, immersing children in a foreign language is
not detrimental to learning content material in that language, as long as the
home language continues to develop and Is supported (Genesee, 1987).
Thus, teachers should apply everyday personal values into their
professional identity, which will become a successful relationship among

teacher and students. I will like to add that I am going to leave all
assumptions behind and I will ask to my students about their preferences
about the subject content, and I am going to apply more tests about learning
styles. In this way my teaching and learning process will be successful due to
both students as well as teachers, are going to reach our goals.
Then, teachers should stop making assumptions and start doing critical
reflection in these fake beliefs about students thoughts, feelings or learning
preferences. A critical reflection should start by asking deep inside if they are
making a good planning by matching curricula and students goals, needs
and

cultural

backgrounds.

Additionally,

this

critical

reflection

should

recognize that their personal assumptions, values, beliefs and biases may
affect

decisions

they

make

about

curriculum

(reflecting,

planning,

interacting, monitoring and assessing). Critical reflection involves analysing

your own learning and teaching practices that may contribute to effective
pedagogies within key components of an effective curriculum such as setting
an appropriate context for learners, create a comfortable environment in the
classroom, assessing students understanding and promoting collaborative
work.
Reflecting on my teaching practice, I realize just how much I much
input I have received from my students and taken action accordingly and so
that to a great extent it now affects my own classroom management. Taking
all these aspects into consideration, I would like to add that I will make a self-

reflection at the end of every class, even though if it is a short one but, it will
be very significant.
On the other hand we have the deficit perspective concept, which is
the negative beliefs and assumptions regarding the ability, aspirations and
work of people. The results of this perspective can be devastating and could
make school an awful place to be in. So, teachers should avoid negative
thoughts due to they only will bring negative aspects into their classrooms.
My point of view is The more negative you see things, the more negative
your day will be.
Subsequently, if teachers do their best every single class, sooner or
later students and the community will notice changes and the process of
learning will be a comfortable and a successful one. Every teacher has
freedom in the classroom, so inside it teacher can adapt the lesson according
to students needs, and adjust lessons to students cultural background and
prior knowledge. Teachers are role model for students as well as for many
people in a community, so they must be proud and show what they are made
of.
