THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

CONGREGATION: On the Morning of January 6th, 1482, the good citizens of Paris gathered at the
cathedral to listen to the sermon
(DOM CLAUDE FROLLO enters, robed. He stands centerstage, addressing the CONGREGATES of Notre
Dame).
FROLLO: of Dom Claude Frollo
CONGREGATION: archdeacon of Notre Dame, before whom the congregation trembled as he stopped
beneath the lofty arches of the church.
FROLLO: Congregants, we gather here, in this vast symphony of stone, on the morning of the Feast of Fools.
Our streets will soon be filled with those unsavory elements: criminals, foreigners, and gypsies, who have
infested our city, and are on this one day free to roam without being subject to arrest. Beware the temptations
of those less devout than we. We must fight the urge to indulge ourselves. For remember, we are all born
sinners.
CONGREGATION
LONG YEARS AGO DID THIS STORY BEGIN
IN THIS PLACE CALLED NOTRE DAME
TWO ORPHAN BROTHERS WERE BOTH TAKEN IN
BY THE GRACE OF NOTRE DAME
FROLLO (de-robes):
CLAUDE, THE OLDER WHO CARED FOR HIS BROTHER
JEHAN (from the CONGREGATES, also de-robes):
YOUNG JEHAN, FULL OF BEAUTY AND CHARM
BOTH:
AND THEY LIVED AND THEY GREW
AND AWOKE TO THE MUSIC OF BELLS
ALL:
THE BELLS OF NOTRE DAME
CHORUS:
KYRIE ELEISON
FROLLO
OH DEAR BROTHER
MEET THESE ARCHES AND THIS SACRED DOME
CHORUS
KYRIE ELEISON

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

FROLLO
WE ARE BLESSED TO FIND OUR SANCTUARY AND OUR HOME
JEHAN: (lovingly picks up his brother and hugs him) Come with me dear brother! Im heading into town for
a little fun.
FROLLO: No, Jehan, you must stay home and write out your catechism.
JEHAN: No, you must come with me to the bar!
FROLLO: Jehan! I am not going to lie for you again if you stay up late.
JEHAN: Yes you will. Brother dear! (He kisses FROLLOs cheek) You are so good to me. (JEHAN exits).
CONGREGATION
RIGHTEOUS CLAUDE FROLLO
WAS EVER MORE DRAWN
LIKE A SON TO NOTRE DAME
JEHAN (entering):
NOT LIKE HIS PROFLIGATE BROTHER JEHAN
WHOD HAVE NONE OF NOTRE DAME
CONGREGATION
THOUGH AS BROTHERS THEY LOVED ONE ANOTHER
FROLLO WATCHED IN DESPAIR AND ALARM
AS JEHAN WHO GREW WILD
AND DEFIED AND DEFILED
ALL THE LAWS
THE LAWS OF NOTRE DAME
(Jehan now has a bottle of liquor and has arrived back at the cathedral, late at night).
FROLLO: Jehan, Where have you been? Why werent you in evening mass?
JEHAN: Its your birthday today! We must celebrate! I brought you a gift shes a friend of mine.
(He reveals FLORIKA).
FROLLO: A gypsy girl in our room?
JEHAN: Florika she is a beauty, isnt she? This is my brother, Claude.
FLORIKA: Happy birthdayClaude. Dont be shy. I can see you want to. I can see it in your eyes. Ha-ha! I
can feel it, too!

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

FROLLO: Stop!
FATHER DUPIN: Claude?
JEHAN: Its Father Dupin! Help me hide her!
(Within the CONGREGATION acting as a stone wall, they hide her. FATHER DUPIN hides her)
FATHER DUPIN: What is going on in here?
JEHAN: Nothing, Father!
FATHER DUPIN: Is it nothing, Claude?
FROLLO: Tell him, Jehan. If you wont, I will! (Pulls FLORIKA out of the hiding place and throws her to the
floor).
CHORUS:
KYRIE ELEISON
FATHER DUPIN:
YOU MUST LEAVE, JEHAN,
THIS HOLY REFUGE WHERE YOUVE DWELLED.
JEHAN: Leave? But Father
FATHER DUPIN:
SORRY CLAUDE, BUT IVE NO CHOICE
YOUR BROTHER IS EXPELLED
FROLLO: Jehan
JEHAN: What did you think? That they wouldnt send me away? Who do you think these people are?
FROLLO: These people have given us a home and comfort and safety!
JEHAN: Comfort?! You call this comfort? You call this safety? Well, you can have it! Youre welcome to it.
JEHAN AND FLORIKA: And Jehan and the girl left. (They exit)
CONGREGATION: And Frollo didnt hear from his brother for several years. Meanwhile
FROLLO ASCENDED
UNCOMMONLY FAST THROUGH THE RANKS
THE RANKS OF NOTRE DAME
TILL HE WAS NAMED THE ARCHDEACON AT LAST

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

AND GAVE THANKS TO NOTRE DAME
AND THEN ONE AWFUL DAY GOT A MESSAGE
FROLLO:
AND THE NAME THAT IT BORE WAS JEHAN
CONGREGATION:
AND CONCEALING HIS FACE
FROLLO STOLE TO A PLACE
FAR AWAYAWAY FROM NOTRE DAME
FROLLO: Im Father Claude Frollo. I was told to come to this place.
WOMAN: Oh, weve heard about you.
JEHAN: (laying in a bed and dying) Hello, brother dear.
FROLLO: Jehan! Oh, thank God! Where have you been?
JEHAN: Ive been travelinghounded from city to city with my beautiful Florika.
FROLLO: The gypsy girlyoure with her?
JEHAN: She died three months agofrom the pox. It was a terrible thing to watch her suer.
FROLLO: Jehan, let me take you back. Ill bring you home. (He holds him in his arms).
FROLLO:
BROTHER DEAREST, COME WITH ME
WHERE WE WILL FIND A REMEDY
AND NOTRE DAME ONCE MORE WILL BE
YOUR SANCTUARY
HEALING YOU WILL BE MY GOAL
NOT JUST YOUR BODY, BUT YOUR SOUL
WELL BE TOGETHER IN OUR HOLY SANCTUARY
JEHAN: Enough, Claude! Enough of your pieties! Its too late for me anyway. But if you have truly discovered
charity at this late date, there is someone you can help.
(A member of the CONGREGATION hands FROLLO a baby wrapped in a blanket).
FROLLO: A baby? Yours? Aa monster! Its Gods judgement on you! The wicked shall not go unpunished!
JEHAN: I should have known! I was a fool to think youd look after him!

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

FROLLO: Look after him? Me?
JEHAN: He has no one else!
FROLLO: But hes a gypsy child!
JEHAN:And mine. Take himif you can find it in your heart. (Dies).
FROLLO: Jehan? Jehan?! (He rushes into the night with the baby).
CHORUS:
DIES IRAE
DIES ILLA
SOLVET SAECLUM
IN FAVILLA
(FROLLO runs to the front of the stage and raises the baby, ready to throw it into the abyss).
CHORUS:
KYRIE ELEISON
CONGREGATION:
AND THE SAINTS REGARDED FROLLO
FROM THEIR STONE FACADE
CHORUS:
KYRIE ELEISON
AND HE FELT THEIR GAZE
AS IF IT WERE THE EYES OF GOD
FROLLO: Oh Lord, youve sent me a test. This child is my cross to bear. I may not have saved my brother,
but I will save thisthing. But a monster like this must be kept hidden.
FROLLO:
SEE THIS LONESOME CREATURE
FROM WHOM LESSER MEN WOULD FLEE
I WILL KEEP AND CARE FOR HIM
AND TEACH HIM AT MY KNEE
TO THINK LIKE ME
CONGREGATION: And Frollo gave the child a name. A cruel name that means half-formed
FROLLO: Quasimodo!

10

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

CLOPIN:
NOW HERE IS A RIDDLE TO GUESS IF YOU CAN
SING THE BELLS OF NOTRE DAME
(QUASIMODO enters in common attire)
QUASIMODO:
WHAT MAKES A MONSTER
AND WHAT MAKES A MAN?
(During this, he smears paint on his face to give the illusion of a deformity and the actor transforms into the
hunchback. His tunic is placed on him as well.)
ALL:
SING THE BELLS, BELLS, BELLS,
BELLS, BELLS, BELLS, BELLS, BELLS,
THE BELLS OF NOTRE DAME
FROLLO: Up! (He points to the bells).
(The bells ring. QUASIMODO swings from the bells, and speaks over their chiming.)
QUASIMODO: Oh Marie! Youre in very good voice today! Jacqueline, we need to fix your clapper! Cmon,
Gabriel! Pour your flood of sound into the square! Oh, its a holiday! Sing, my bells! Sing till you are all quite
out of breath!
(Distant sound of birds chirping. QUASIMODO goes to them.)
QUASIMODO: Ah, morning, my little birdies!
(The GARGOYLES are members of the CONGREGATION, but have small chimes and bells that they ring
when they speak).
GARGOYLE: Dont you wish you could be like those birds and just fly away?
QUASIMODO: Ooh, me? No. No!
GARGOYLE: But how beautiful it must be out there!
QUASIMODO: Ah, no. No. Not for me.
GARGOYLES: Why not?
QUASIMODO: Its too dangerous!

11

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

GARGOYLE: The boy is right. Dont encourage him!
GARGOYLES: Why shouldnt we?
CONGREGATION: For Quasimodo, the cathedral was not only his home, but his universe. It was people
with figures of marble; with kings and saints, monsters and demons. The saints blessed him, and the monsters
protected him!
QUASIMODO: Todayis the Feast of Fools!
GARGOYLES: YEAH! YAY!
GARGOYLE: Quasimodo, why dont you try going down there?
QUASIMODO: You know Ive never gone outside.
GARGOYLE: You can leave any time you want!
GARGOYLE: Master wont allow it!
QUASIMODO: No, last year, he said Someday, maybe..
GARGOYLE: He always says Someday. Never today!
GARGOYLE: Besides, you shouldnt have to ask for permission to go outside! Just put one foot in front of
the other!
GARGOYLES: And sneak out!
QUASIMODO: I cant!
(FROLLO enters carrying a basket with two cups and bread).
FROLLO: Quasimodo? (He taps him on the shoulder). Good morning, Quasimodo.
QUASIMODO: (At the sight of his master, he scrunches up, and looks up toward FROLLO). Morning,
master.
FROLLO: Were you talking to someone?
QUASIMODO: No! Justmy friends.
FROLLO: Mhm, your friends. And what are your friends made of?
QUASIMODO: Stone.

12

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

FROLLO: And can stone talk back?
QUASIMODO: No! (slaps his hand.)
FROLLO: Thats right. What kind of conversation is that? It takes two people to communicate, my boy. And
who is that other person for you?
QUASIMODO: You. You, Master.
FROLLO: Right, again. (Frollo presents bread and wine to QUASIMODO) Corpus christi (the body of Christ).
QUASIMODO: Amen.
FROLLO: Sanctus christi (the blood of Christ).
QUASIMODO: Amen.
FROLLO: In nominee patri, fill et spiritu sancta (In the name of the father, the son and the holy spirit). I brought
you a special treat today. Strawberry?
(QUASIMODO goes to grab one from him.)
FROLLO: Ah! Ah! (Smacks him away) Self-control, Quasimodo. Its important to master the art.
(QUASIMODO tentatively takes the strawberry and puts it in his mouth.)
FROLLO: And of manners, too!
QUASIMODO: (spits it out) Thank you, master. (FROLLO gestures to him that it is okay to eat it.
QUASIMODO immediately devours it).
FROLLO: Now shall we tell todays story?
QUASIMODO: Yes! Yes!
FROLLO: Stories from our homes beautiful statues! And we were up to?
QUASIMODO: Flight into Egypt!
FROLLO: Thats right. What do you remember about that story?
QUASIMODO:Joseph fled into Egypt.
FROLLO: (laughs) Yes, he did. With his wife, Mary, and?

13

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

QUASIMODO: Baby Jesus!
FROLLO: Thats right now, who hid them? Who protected them?
QUASIMODO: Saint Aphro- (he keeps trying to pronounce the name.)
FROLLO: (laughs, but speaks clearly) Aphrodisius. Saint Aphrodisius. As I have hidden and protected you.
(Nearby horns are heard)
FROLLO: Oh, ugh. Well I suppose I must stop stalling. (Goes to look down upon the square in disgust) Look
at them down there, like horrible vermin! Scuttling about. And all to see the gypsies sing and dance.
QUASIMODO: Gypsies? You told me gypsies not allowed to sing, dance.
FROLLO: They arent except on this one day: The Feast of Fools.
QUASIMODO: Feast of Fools.
FROLLO: Itll be the last time if I have anything to say about it.
QUASIMODO: Last time?
FROLLO: I petitioned the king to stop next years festival.
QUASIMODO: But then, I can never go.

3. SANCTUARY

(Frollo)

FROLLO: Why our king allows the gypsies here in the first place is beyond me.
THROUGH BORDERS POROUS AS A SIEVE
WE LET THEM COME
AND LET THEM LIVE
ITS ALMOST AS IF THEY WERE GIVEN
SANCTUARY
HOW IT FILLS ME WITH DISGUST
TO WALK AMONGST THEM
YET I MUST
I LOATH TO LEAVE YOU
AND OUR TRUSTY
SANCTUARY
QUASIMODO: What if I came with you? Im strong, I could protect you.

14

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

FROLLO: You protect me?
QUASIMODO: Like Saint Aphro- (tries to pronounce it again)
FROLLO: (laughs at Quasimodo) Aphrodisius.

3A. SANCTUARY II

(Frollo and Quasimodo)

Im sorry, my boy. I don't mean to laugh at you. But the truth is, thats what others will do. And worse.
THE WORLD IS CRUEL
THE WORLD IS WICKED
ITS I ALONE WHOM YOU CAN TRUST
IN THIS WHOLE CITY
I AM YOUR ONLY FRIEND
I WHO KEEP YOU, FEED YOU
TEACH YOU, DRESS YOU
I WHO LOOK UPON YOU
WITHOUT FEAR
HOW CAN I PROTECT YOU, BOY
UNLESS YOU ALWAYS
STAY IN HERE
AWAY IN HERE?
FROLLO: Now, remember what Ive taught you, Quasimodo.
YOU ARE DEFORMED
QUASIMODO:
I AM DEFORMED
FROLLO:
AND YOU ARE UGLY
QUASIMODO:
AND I AM UGLY
FROLLO:
AND THESE ARE CRIMES
FOR WHICH THE WORLD
SHOWS LITTLE PITY
YOU DO NOT COMPREHEND
QUASIMODO:
YOU ARE MY DEFENDER

15

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

FROLLO:
OUT THERE
THEYLL REVILE YOU AS A MONSTER
QUASIMODO:
I AM MONSTER
FROLLO:
OUT THERE
THEY WILL HATE AND SCORN AND JEER
QUASIMODO:
ONLY A MONSTER
FROLLO:
WHY INVITE THEIR CURSES
AND THEIR CONSTERNATION?
STAY IN HERE
BE FAITHFUL TO ME
QUASIMODO:
IM FAITHFUL
FROLLO:
BE GRATEFUL TO ME
QUASIMODO:
IM GRATEFUL
FROLLO:
DO AS I SAY
OBEY
BOTH:
AND STAY IN HERE
FROLLO: Remember Quasimodo, this is your sanctuary. (He exits).

4. OUT THERE

(Quasimodo)

QUASIMODO: My sanctuary.
SAFE BEHIND THESE WINDOWS
AND THESE PARAPETS OF STONE
GAZING AT THE PEOPLE DOWN BELOW ME
ALL MY LIFE I WATCH THEM
AS I HIDE UP HERE ALONE

16

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

HUNGRY FOR THE HISTORIES
THEY SHOW ME
ALL MY LIFE I MEMORIZE THEIR FACES
KNOWING THEM AS THEY WILL NEVER KNOW ME
ALL MY LIFE I WONDER
HOW IT FEELS TO PASS A DAY
NOT ABOVE THEM
BUT PART OF THEM
AND OUT THERE
LIVING IN THE SUN
GIVE ME ONE DAY
OUT THERE
ALL I ASK IS ONE
TO HOLD FOREVER
OUT THERE
WHERE THEY ALL LIVE UNAWARE
WHAT ID GIVE
WHAT ID DARE
JUST TO LIVE ONE DAY
OUT THERE
OUT THERE AMONG THE MILLERS
AND THE WEAVERS
AND THEIR WIVES
THROUGH THE ROOFS AND GABLES
I CAN SEE THEM
EVERYDAY THEY SHOUT AND SCOLD
AND GO ABOUT THEIR LIVES
HEEDLESS OF THE GIFT IT IS TO BE THEM
IF I WERE IN THEIR SKIN
ID TREASURE EVERY INSTANT
OUT THERE
STROLLING BY THE SEINE
TASTE A MORNING
OUT THERE
LIKE ORDINARY MEN
WHO FREELY WALK
ABOUT THERE
JUST ONE DAY AND THEN
I SWEAR
ILL BE CONTENT
WITH MY SHARE

17

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

WONT RESENT
WONT DESPAIR
OLD AND BENT
I WONT CARE
ILL HAVE SPENT ONE DAY
OUT THERE

approached a haughty-looking gentleman.

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

CONGREGATION: Whose dashing manner and bold swagger could not but conceal a haunted look in his
eyes.
PHOEBUS: New to Paris, just back from the front.
CONGREGATION GIRL: One of those handsome fellows that all the girls take a liking.
PHOEBUS: Thank you, ladies. Might one of you enjoy showing me around?
GIRL: Oh, Captain, were not those kinds of girls.

GYPSY: Take pity. Im just a poor fellow!

FROLLO: My goodness, sir!
PHOEBUS: Beg pardon, your grace.

TOWNSPERSON: Hail to the King! (mock bows)
TOWNSPERSON: Long live the King! (throws food)
TOWNSPERSON: Bon appetite (throws food)
CONGREGATION: The crowd had never done this before. Not in all the years of the Feast of Fools, but
they had never seen a creature so horrible! And it drove them wild!
(The crowd springs onto QUASIMODO, while FROLLO watches in disgust. They strip him of his cape and
hit him over the head. Then, they dunk his face into a bucket of water).
TOWNSPERSON: Tie him down!

28

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

(They grab ropes and attempt to tie QUASIMODO down. He hurls one of them o of the stage. At last, they
have him pinned down and begin to whip him.)
QUASIMODO: (seeing FROLLO) Master, help me!
PHOEBUS: Permission to stop this cruelty, your grace.
FROLLO: Not just yet, Captain, a lesson needs to be learned here.
ESMERELDA: (seeing the cruelty) Stop, please! No!
CLOPIN: (trying to stop her) What are you doing? Are you crazy?! Im warning you, Esmerelda!
ESMERELDA: (breaking away from CLOPIN to the front of the stage) No! STOP!
(The townspeople break away from QUASIMODO and let go of their ropes. QUASIMODO starts to cry).
ESMERELDA: Im so sorry.
(She rushes to him, and he turns away thinking she will hurt him).
ESMERELDA: No, please, dont be afraid.
QUASIMODO: Wat water.
(She gives him water).
QUASIMODO: Thank you.
(ESMERELDA takes a handkerchief out and wipes QUASIMODOs face, who whimpers).
ESMERELDA: Shhh. (She takes out a knife, and cuts him free from the ropes). Go! Please!
(Quasimodo rushes to the side)
TOWNSPERSON: What are you doing?! Youre ruining all our fun!
TOWNSPEOPLE: Yeah!/You Gypsy whore!/Gypsy whore!
CLOPIN: (rushes to ESMERELDA) I warned you, didnt I?!
(With a flash and pu of smoke, the two disappear).
FROLLO: Witchcraft!

29

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

TOWNSPERSON: (sees QUASIMODO) There he is! Get him!
FROLLO: Stop this at once! We must show kindness to thiscreature! As our savior did when he healed the
Lepers. Time to go home. The performance is over!
PHOEBUS: (shouting at the people) He said to go!

8B. SANCUTARY IV

(Frollo and Quasimodo)

(The crowd disperses. They hiss and spit at QUASIMODO, who goes to his master. FROLLO backs away).
FROLLO:
SEE HOW ITS CRUEL?
SEE HOW ITS WICKED?
SEE HOW IVE SHELTERED YOU
FROM HAVING TO GO THROUGH THIS?
HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME?
QUASIMODO: Forgive, master. Wont ever leave again
FROLLO:
NOW BOY, YOU SEE
YOU DONT BELONG
WITH NORMAL MEN
YOU ARE HAPPY WHEN
YOURE IN YOUR SANCTUARY
QUASIMODO:
SANCTUARY
FROLLO:
YOUR SANCTUARY
BOTH:
NEVER TO COME
OUT HERE
QUASIMODO:
HERE
FROLLO:
AGAIN.
FROLLO: (to PHOEBUS) Take the boy inside.

30

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

(PHOEBUS goes to grab QUASIMODOs arm, who pushes him away and enters the cathedral. FROLLO sees
ESMERELDAs scarf laying on the ground. He picks it up and exits the stage. Who is this girl? he thinks).

9A. BELLS OF NOTRE DAME II

(Congregation and Esmerelda)

CONGREGATION:
SO THE POOR HUNCHBACK
RETREATED BACK IN THROUGH
THE DOORS OF NOTRE DAME
AND THERE FOLLOWED THE
GYPSY GIRL WHOD NEVER BEEN
THROUGH THE DOORS OF NOTRE DAME
AND SHE STOPPED AND
BEHELD ALL THE BEAUTY
LIKE A BEGGAR RECEIVING AN ALMS
AND EACH WINDOW AND PILLAR
AND ARCH SEEMED TO FILL HER
WITH LIGHT
ESMERELDA:
THE LIGHT OF NOTRE DAME
(She is amazed by the beauty. FROLLO enters the cathedral and sees her and hides her scarf.)
FROLLO: So a gypsy dares to enter this holy place?
ESMERELDA: Why not?
FROLLO: Because your kind arent allowed here.
ESMERELDA: (upset) Why do you hate us so much? What did we ever do to you?!
FROLLO: More than you knowWhat are you doing in here?
ESMERELDA: I came here to find that boy. It was my fault he was up on the stage in the first place.
FROLLO: The boy doesnt need your help. Hes my charge. God loves even a monster.
ESMERELDA: Hes no less human than the rest of us.
FROLLO: Some of us are less human. In the moral sense.

31

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

ESMERELDA: (knowingly) Do you mean me?
FROLLO: You dance in public without shame or modesty.
ESMERELDA: I dance because I enjoy it (smiles). Others enjoy it, too, and give me money.
FROLLO: As they would a woman of your repute. Do you also deny possessing black magic?
ESMERELDA: If I had the power of magic, why wouldnt I use it to help myself and my people?!
FROLLO: (beat) Youre clever. You twist the truth just as you twist your body and dance.
ESMERELDA: Your grace, there must be some charity inside you. If youve helped that boy, then surely you
can extend that kindness to others almost as unfortunate. How you would wish others to treat you, could you
not treat them?
FROLLO: Our Lord Jesus said something very similar. (He walks toward her and she backs away).
(The bells ring for midnight mass.)
FROLLO: You see him on the cross there, gazing down on us? (He hears the choir) Midnight mass is starting.
I must go. My child, though your people are lost, maybe something within you can be saved. Stay. Perhaps
youll see what true beauty is and we.We can continue this conversation afterwards. (He leaves).

10. GOD HELP THE OUTCASTS

(Esmerelda and Congregation)

ESMERELDA (looking toward the cross):

I DONT KNOW IF YOU CAN HEAR ME
OR IF YOURE EVEN THERE
I DONT KNOW IF YOU WOULD LISTEN
TO A GYPSYS PRAYER
YES, I KNOW IM JUST AN OUTCAST
I SHOULDNT SPEAK TO YOU
STILL I SEE YOUR FACE AND WONDER
WERE YOU ONCE AN OUTCAST TOO
GOD HELP THE OUTCASTS
HUNGRY FROM BIRTH

CONGREGATION:
I ASK FOR WEALTH
I ASK FOR FAME
I ASK FOR GLORY

THE POOR AND DOWN-TROD
I THOUGHT WE ALL WERE
THE CHILDREN OF GOD
GOD HELP THE OUTCASTS
CHILDREN OF GOD
CHILDREN OF GOD
(PHOEBUS and QUASIMODO have been watching this and PHOEBUS steps out toward her. FREDERIC
tries to capture her, but he is stopped and exits).
PHOEBUS: Its all right. Ill take care of it. (To ESMERELDA). I thought you disappeared in a pu of
smoke.
ESMERELDA: Dont believe everything you see. (She rushes toward him).
PHOEBUS: Where do you think youre going?
(She pulls her knife out and places it in front of his neck).
PHOEBUS: Calm downGive me a chance to apologize.
ESMERELDA: For what?
PHOEBUS: For this. (He grabs her arm and knocks the knife out of her hand) Still, I am impressed. You
fight almost as well as a man.
ESMERELDA: FunnyI was going to say the same thing about you! (She elbows him in the chest and grabs
her knife back).

33

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

PHOEBUS: Look, its my job to protect this cathedral.
ESMERELDA: From dirty gypsies like me.
PHOEBUS: You said it, I didnt. But I do have my orders to follow.
ESMERELDA: And if theres one thing a good soldier knows, its how to follow orders.
PHOEBUS: (shaking his head) Who said anything about my being a good soldier?
ESMERELDA: Are you saying youre not?
PHOEBUS: Im saying I have a job to do. Its much better than the one it got me out of.
ESMERELDA: Burying your comrades in unmarked graves? You can look at me, you know. We dont all
cast spells.
PHOEBUS: I know thatWhere are you from anyway?
ESMERELDA: (laughs) Oh, youre asking a gypsy?
(He nods).
ESMERELDA: (Her expression changes) All I know is that I come from nothing. Just like you.

10B. OUT THERE II

(Congregation)

(At this moment, QUASIMODO moves and makes a noise. ESMERELDA hears him and rushes up through
the cathedral).
PHOEBUS: Now where are you going?!
ESMERELDA: To see that boy!
PHOEBUS: Why cant you just mind your own business?
ESMERELDA: It has to be somebodys business (calling after him) Hello?! Are you up there?!
(Phoebus exits)
CONGREGATION:
QUASIMODO, QUICK
YOUVE GOT TO HIDE

CONGREGATION:

(the GARGOYLES freeze in position)
ESMERELDA: (enters, sees him hiding) Please don't be afraid. Im so sorry about what happened to you.
(looks around) Oh, what an amazing place. Are you alone up here? Are you-.. Hello? Can you hear me?
(She reaches out to QUASIMODO, and he turns to her).
ESMERELDA: You cant hear me can you?
QUASIMODO: The bells. But I can still hear a little and read lips.
ESMERELDA: (speaks clearer) Well, I thought I heard you when I came up here.
QUASIMODO: Oh no, not me. Gargoyles(Gestures to them, but they are gone).
ESMERELDA: Gargoyles? Oh, they talk to you?

35

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

QUASIMODO: Everything talks to me. Wind, a bird, a tree, the bells: my friends. (Turns on himself) No,
thats stupid!
ESMERELDA: No, no its not! I like your friends. Have you lived here a long time?
QUASIMODO: Whole life.
ESMERELDA: Really? Well, it seems like a wonderful place to live.

12. TOP OF THE WORLD

(Esmerelda, Quasimodo and Congregation)

QUASIMODO: Yes. But in wintercold. Can see everything from up here. City gates, river Seine.
ESMERELDA: Oh yes. It sparkles in the light. (She climbs up on the balcony ledge to see clearer)
Small problemIm afraid of heights.
(She teeters and QUASIMODO pulls her o of the ledge).
ESMERELDA: Thank you. Youre very strong.
QUASIMODO: Yes, I am.
ESMERELDA: Still, Im glad I can get to see things down there.
GAZING DOWN FROM

CONGREGATION:

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

QUASIMODO: IIits nice, the two of us sitting.
ESMERELDA:
THE TWO OF US SITTING
CONGREGATION:
THE TWO OF YOU SITTING

(As the song ends, QUASIMODO and ESMERELDA

are both sitting on the edge of the balcony.)

ALL:
SITTING ON TOP OF THE WORLD
(ESMERELDA moves his hair from out of his face. QUASIMODO gets o of the ledge and rings the bells for
her).
QUASIMODO: Oh, bells, oh, Gabriel, ring for her! Sing for her! Sing for Esmerelda!
(The bells of so loud that ESMERELDA has to cover her ears).
ESMERELDA: Its so loud!
QUASIMODO: Yes!
ESMERELDA: Beautiful, but loud!
QUASIMODO: All in good voice today! I knew today would be a special day! Look, up there is hot lead.
ESMERELDA: Hot lead?
QUASIMODO: Yes, I use to fix the bells. I show you! But careful, its very, very hot.
FROLLO: (entering) QUASIMODO, WHAT ARE YOU DOING RINGING THE BELLS AT THE
WRONG TIME?! SINCE WHEN HAVE YOU EVER- (sees ESMERELDA). Oh, my child. I looked for you
after mass. I thought you left. Instead, I see my charge has distracted you. Quasimodo, you shouldnt have.
ESMERELDA: It was my fault, your grace.
FROLLO: Oh, my son, dont you have duties to perform?
QUASIMODO: (bows) Yes, master.
FROLLO: Dont stray too far.
(QUASIMODO exits reluctantly and gestures to the gargoyles to join him).
FROLLO: Filling the boys head with dreams?

38

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

ESMERELDA: No, just thoughts. Nothing wrong with thoughts, is there?
FROLLO: That depends. Well you see how impressionable he is. Little more than a child.
ESMERELDA: Looking at him I dont see a child.
FROLLO: But you are in a way, you indicated a willingness to learn. A soul who wishes to be saved is all ready
halfway there. I could instruct you in the gospels; share with you our Lords grace. You could come here every
day. Better yet, perhapsyou could stay here.
ESMERELDA: (smiles, but then recoils) Stay here?
FROLLO: (getting more filled with lust) In the cathedralwith me (He attempts to grab her hand).
ESMERELDA: (she becomes frightened and backs away) I dont think that would be a good idea.
FROLLO: No?
ESMERELDA: I see the way you look at me.
FROLLO: (enraged) HOW DARE YOU?! Your soul is so unclean, you cant imagine goodness in others. I
should have known no gypsy would truly want to be saved.
ESMERELDA: I dont think Im in need of saving. (She is slowly trying to get away).
FROLLO: Of course, your kind never do. CAPTAIN! (He calls down to the square and grabs
ESMERELDA). I could be a good friend to you, but I warn you, I could also be a terrible enemy!
PHOEBUS: (below) Your grace!
FROLLO: Escort this gypsy out of the church! She never sets foot here again and if she does shell be
arrested! (He makes her leave) Quasimodo! That gypsy girlQUASIMODO: Sheshe was nice to me.
FROLLO: Oh, was she? What do you know of people and their feelings, my boy?!
QUASIMODO: Feelings? (realizing his mistake) I.nothing.
FROLLO: Quasimodo, do you ever have impure thoughts?
QUASIMODO: Impure?
FROLLO: Oh, a boy like you; all ready grown in body possessing those urges and ideas that come to a young
man (he is now furious) YOU MUST STOP. YOU MUST STOP THESE FEELINGS! (He smacks

39

QUASIMODO across the face). YOU MUST NOT FOLLOW IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF YOUR FATHER!
HE WAS WEAKand you have is corruption inside of you! Listen to me, Quasimodo, Im warning you about
her. Shes dangerous. She was put in our paths for a reason. To tempt us. Promise me you wont think of her
again.
QUASIMODO: Think-?
FROLLO: PROMISE! (He raises his hand to smack again).
QUASIMODO: I promise(he is crying now).
(FROLLO opens his arms, and QUASIMODO embraces him).
FROLLO: Soon we will be rid of her.
CONGREGATION: (whispers) Esmerelda.Esmerelda.Esmerelda.
FROLLO: Its just the two of us still, boy. You and I against the world.
QUASIMODO: Yes, master!
FROLLO: Good boy. Now sound the bells and send the city to sleep. Goodnight.
QUASIMODO: Goodnight, master.
(The bells start to ring)
CONGREGATION: But despite his admonition to Quasimodo, Frollo himself cannot stop thinking about
her.
(FROLLO retrieves a cloak and goes out into the night)
CONGREGATION: He began to walk the streets night after night, unable to bring himself to return alone
to his cold, dark chambers. He barely knew what he was looking for, but he could not resist
FROLLO: (seeing a woman in the street)so he saw her, everywhere!

13. THE TAVERN SONG (THAI MOL PIYAS)

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

CONGREGATION: Until one night one night, walking down an unknown alley, he drew closer to the most
unsavory part of the city. Passing lovers embracing in the shadows.
FROLLO: He heard the sound of distant music. (FROLLO enters the tavern and hides).

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

PHOEBUS: Relax, just looking for for a little rest and recreation for my young friend, Fredric, as well.
CLOPIN: Well, Im sure we can arrange that.
PHOEBUS: Actually, Im looking for someone in particular.
CLOPIN: Im afraid that doesnt surprise me, but unfortunately shes all ready spoken for.
ESMERELDA: Oh really, Clopin? Nobody speaks for me.
CLOPIN: (disappointed) I am only looking out for your own welfare.
ESMERELDA: I can look out for myself.
PHOEBUS: You lose friends easily, dont you?
ESMERELDA: I have that way about me.
PHOEBUS: Which makes seeing you that more dicult.
ESMERELDA: And does that disappoint you?
PHOEBUS: Does that surprise you?
ESMERELDA: Frankly, yes.
PHOEBUS: Me too.
ESMERELDA: Well, you found me, what are you going to do about that?
PHOEBUS: I told you. Im not as good as everybody likes to think.
ALL:
IN THE DARK OF THE NIGHT

ALL:

PHOEBUS: Well, that was pleasant. For you too?
ESMERELDA: I have to go.
PHOEBUS: Why?
ESMERELDA: Youre not the only one who needs to make a living.

QUASIMODO: Oh, I see her!
GARGOYLE: That isnt her
QUASIMODO: Youre right. I keep thinking I see her, everywhere.
GARGOYLE: Youre not supposed to be thinking about her.
QUASIMODO: Oh, I cant help it. I miss her.
GARGOYLE: Quasimodo, you can think about whoever you want.
QUASIMODO: No! Master said I must not.
GARGOYLE: He cant tell you what to think and not think! Besides, you look down there almost every
night.
QUASIMODO: Yes, but this is dierent.

43

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

14. HEAVENS LIGHT

(Quasimodo)

Everything is dierent now.

QUASIMODO:
SO MANY TIMES OUT THERE
IVE WATCHED A HAPPY PAIR
OF LOVERS WALKING IN THE NIGHT
THEY HAD A KIND OF GLOW AROUND THEM
IT ALMOST LOOKED LIKE HEAVENS LIGHT
I KNEW ID NEVER KNOW
THAT WARM AND LOVING GLOW
THOUGH I MIGHT WISH WITH ALL MY MIGHT
NO FACE AS HIDEOUS AS MY FACE
WAS EVER MEANT FOR HEAVENS LIGHT
BUT SUDDENLY AN ANGEL
HAS SMILED AT ME
AND TOUCHED MY FACE
WITHOUT A TRACE OF FRIGHT
I DARE TO DREAM THAT SHE
MIGHT EVEN CARE FOR ME
AND AS I RING THE BELLS TONIGHT
MY COLD, DARK TOWER SEEMS SO BRIGHT
I SWEAR IT MUST BE HEAVENS LIGHT

(FROLLO enters and kneels).
FROLLO: Your MajestyLOUIS: (gasps) My astrologer told me Id have an unexpected guest. (Gestures to FROLLO)
FROLLO: Your Majesty, there is a gypsy witch who is endangering our citizens with her sorcery. She must be
stopped. I need special powers to protect the people and the church.
LOUIS: Frollo, you are a good man, but you know how I hate to be overly hasty.
FROLLO: I do, Your Majesty, but be careful, unless the people think you are weak, and the various vergers
around the city feel the need to get the upper hand.
LOUIS: Very well, if you feel you must, but be well

47

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

BOTH: Prudent.
FROLLO: I assure you, Your Majesty, I will do only what is necessary.

PHOEBUS: Cathedral Guard? But we have no military power!
FROLLO: We do now. By His Majestys own authority. When the state asks for our help, the Church must
lend support. (testing PHOEBUS) I take it I can rely on you to deliver her to me.
PHOEBUS: Absolutely, your grace.

(Frollo, Phoebus, Quasimodo and Company)

FROLLO:

FROLLO: (to QUASIMODO) Have no fear, my boy. We will find her and capture her.
FROLLO:
THE WICKED SHALL NOT GO UNPUNISHED
THE HEART OF THE WICKED IS OF LITTLE WORTH
THE WICKED SHALL NOT GO UNPUNISHED
CONGREGANT:
ALL THROUGH THE CITY
AT A MORE FEVERED PITCH THAN
THE BELLS OF NOTRE DAME
(The SOLDIERS and PHOEBUS search the town for her)
PHOEBUS: Two gold pieces for the one who leads us to Esmerelda!
CONGREGANT:
FROLLOS MEN SOUGHT
ESMERELDA, THE WITCH
WITH THE MIGHT OF NOTRE DAME
PHOEBUS: Four gold pieces for the one who leads us to Esmerelda!
CONGREGATION:
TIL AT LAST THEY WERE TOLD OF A BROTHEL
WHERE THEY SOMETIMES HID GYPSIES FROM HARM
BUT THE MADAME THAT WHORED
DENIED IT AND SWORE BY THE SAINTS
THE SAINTS OF NOTRE DAME
SOLDIER: Were looking for La Esmerelda.
MADAME: Never heard of her. But maybe one of my girls can be of service. Ah, Captain Phoebus. Nice to
see you again.
FROLLO: Is this your establishment?
MADAME: Yes. And a man like you shouldnt be here, sullying your pristine reputation.
FREDERIC: No one else is left, your grace.

49

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

FROLLO: Then she must be cleverly hidden. If you want your house to remain standing, give us the gypsy
girl.
MADAME: I know nothing of gypsy girls.
FROLLO: Very well. Well set fire to it. And if, as you claim its empty, it wont matter if we bar the door as
well.
MADAME: Nono, you mustnt!
FROLLO: A lesson needs to be learned here. (To PHOEBUS) Burn it. Did you hear me, Captain?
PHOEBUS (standing still, unsure):
AND HE HELD THE TORCH
THAT CRACKLED
LIKE THE GYPSYS VOICE
FROLLO: Are you disobeying a direct order?
PHOEBUS:
AND HE KNEW
THIS WAS THE MOMENT
HE MUST MAKE A CHOICE
FROLLO: I knew it! Shes bewitched you, too. Captain! Carry out the order!
CHORUS (PHOEBUS hears ESMERELDAs words in his mind):
GOD HELP THE OUTCASTS
THEY LOOK TO YOU STILL
GOD HELP THE OUTCASTS
OR NOBODY WILL
PHOEBUS:
GOD HELP THE OUTCASTS
OR NOBODY WILL!
FROLLO:
COWARD! TRAITOR! GYPSYS PAWN
YOURE RELIVED OF YOUR PATROL
PHOEBUS: Consider it my highest honor!
FROLLO:
KYRIE ELEISON
GOD HAVE MERCY ON YOUR SOUL

50

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

FROLLO: Lieutenant, youre now in charge! Arrest captain Phoebus! (The SOLDIERS draw their swords)
ESMERELDA: (Entering from the shadows) No!
FROLLO: You see? There she is!
PHOEBUS: ESMERELDA!
(The SOLDIERS and ESMERELDA fight. During the fight, ESMERELDAs knife is knocked out of her
hand).
ESMERELDA: Phoebus!
(FROLLO takes the knife and stabs PHOEBUS in the back, throwing the knife down afterwards.)
FROLLO: The gypsy stabbed the captain! Arrest them both!
(ESMERELDA takes PHOEBUS and dashes out in a pu of smoke).
FROLLO: Witchcraft! You all saw that! We must find them! Find them if we have to burn down all of Paris!
FROLLO:
PEOPLE OF PARIS

51

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

PHOEBUS: Esmerelda?
ESMERELDA: Shh, you should have minded your own business.
PHOEBUS: It had to be somebodys business.
ESMERELDA: I have to find a place to hide you. Wait here! (She runs o for help)
PHOEBUS: Esmerelda, come back!
PHOEBUS:
WHAT HAVE I DONE FOR ESMERELDA
WHY DO I HEAR HER WORDS INSIDE MY HEAD?
AND STILL, I THINK OF ESMERELDA
WITH MY CAREER AND BODY LEFT FOR DEAD
QUASIMODO:
OUT THERE, SOMEWHERE SHE IS LOST
PHOEBUS:
SOMEWHERE SHE IS LOST
QUASIMODO AND PHOEBUS:
ESMERELDA!
ALL:
WHERE IS THE GIRL CALLED ESMERELDA?

QUASIMODO: Esmerelda! You came back!
ESMERELDA: Yes, I need your help.
QUASIMODO: Anything.
ESMERELDA: This was the closest place I could think of to hide him.
(Other GYPSIES enter carrying the wounded PHOEBUS)
QUASIMODO: (angry and hurt) Why is he here?!
ESMERELDA: Hes been hurt! Quasimodo?! And he needs to recover. Can you keep him safely hidden

the city in your hand.
GYPSY: Esmerelda, quickly! Someone from the Cathedral Guard will be back soon!
ESMERELDA: I must go now. Thank you. (She kisses his cheek and exits).
QUASIMODO: How could you let her leave?!
GARGOYLE: Go after her!
QUASIMODO: Go after her? No. Cant.
GARGOYLE: But she was right here, and you let her go.
QUASIMODO: (regretful) I could never go out there.
GARGOYLE: Shes in danger out there!
GARGOYLE: You have to save her!
QUASIMODO: Save her? Me?
GARGOYLE: Whats the matter?! Are you afraid?!
GARGOYLE: Of course hes afraid. And he should be.
GARGOYLE: But thats what makes you a hero! Doing what youre afraid of!
GARGOYLE: A hero! Or a saint!

QUASIMODO: Story! Story! Saint Aphrodisius!
FROLLO: Oh, good memory. You seem distracted, my boy. Is something troubling you?
QUASIMODO: Troubling? No no.
FROLLO: (aware that he is being lied to) Quasimodo, you know Im looking for Esmerelda for her own good.
If you had any idea where she might be, it would be of great help to her and to me. Did she say anything when
she spoke to you. Did she tell you where she sats?
QUASIMODO: II
FROLLO: Yes?

58

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

QUASIMODO)

18B. ESMERELDA II

SEDUCED BY ESMERELDA
I KNOW YOU DONT MEAN TO BE BAD

FREDERIC: (entering from the door) Excuse me, Your Grace.
FROLLO: Dont interrupt me here!
FREDERIC: Beg pardon, but I have good news. My men believe they have found the gypsys hiding place.
FROLLO: The Court of Miracles!
FREDERIC: (laughs) Yes, they call it so.
FROLLO: Well, Im afraid their miracle has run out. We will attack at dawn. You see my boy, everything will

PHOEBUS: You? How could you possibly? You can hardly speak!
QUASIMODO: You can barely walk!

SOHEY, COME BACK HERE!
CONGREGATION: And Quasimodo PHOEBUS: And Phoebus CONGREGATION: - quickly made their way through the dark streets of Paris, though the hunchback felt a
thrill of fear at once more setting foot outside Notre Dame.
QUASIMODO:
OUT HERE ONCE AGAIN
BEYOND MY PARAPETS OF STONE
STEALING THROUGH THE TWISTING STREETS
OF NIGHT WITH THE UNKNOWN
STILL I MUST DO ANYTHING TO SAVE HER
CONGREGATION: Creeping past the ghostly fountains beside which beggars slept. They ducked into the
shadows to avoid being seen by a pair of women at the windows holding candles, which sputtered in the
gathering fog. The curfew had sounded long ago and the streets were becoming blacker and more deserted
every moment. They could distinguish nothing of the mass of buildings, except black roofs at strange acute
angles. And the labyrinth of alleys and bridges like a ball of thread tangled by a cat.
PHOEBUS: I think you got us completely lost!
QUASIMODO: No, should berighthere.
PHOEBUS: Here? Where? Where the hell are we?
QUASIMODO: Looks like cemetery.
PHOEBUS: Oh god. Youve taken us completely in the wrong direction.
QUASIMODO: Hmm, whats that?
PHOEBUS: I dont hear anything.
CLOPIN: (jumping out) Aah!!

20. COURT OF MIRACLES

(Clopin and Gypsies)

CLOPIN: (victorious) Welcome the Court of Miracles! Very clever to have found our hide-away. Too bad you
wont live to talk about it. Get them inside!

61

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

MAYBE YOUVE HEARD
OF A TERRIBLE PLACE
WHERE THE SCOUNDRELS OF PARIS
COLLECT IN A LAIR
MAYBE YOUVE HEARD
OF THAT MYTHICAL PLACE
CALLED THE THE COURT OF MIRACLES
ALL:
THE COURT OF MIRACLES!
CLOPIN:
BROTHER, YOURE THERE
WHERE THE LAME CAN WALK
AND THE BLIND CAN SEE
BUT THE DEAD CANT TALK
SO YOU WONT BE AROUND
TO REVEAL WHAT YOUVE FOUND!
WE HAVE A METHOD
FOR FOR SPIES AND INTRUDERS
NOT TERRIBLY DIFFERENT
FROM BEES IN A HIVE
HERE IN THE COURT OF MIRACLES
WHERE ITS A MIRACLE
IF YOU GET OUT ALIVE
GYPSY: Look, they have the hunchback and the man. Look!
(QUASIMODO and PHOEBUS are led to be hanged)
GYPSIES: Hang them both/Yeah/Hang them!
CLOPIN: Apologies, gentlemen for you imminent demise. Any last words?
QUASIMODO AND PHOEBUS: (mued pleas through gags)
CLOPIN: I thought not.
ITS ALWAYS SAD
WHEN A LIFES AT ITS FINISH
I HAVE TO ADMIT
TO A BIT OF A PANG
BUT WE MUST PROTECT AT MOST OUR SECRET

62

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

ITS OUR LIVES OR YOURS!
SO YOURE GOING TO HANG!
ESMERELDA: (enters) Stop! Please. These men are my friends!
CLOPIN: More than we are, apparently! Go!
ESMERELDA: Hey!
GYPSIES: No!/Esmerelda?!
CLOPIN: (hurt) How could you betray us like this?
ESMERELDA: I didnt betray you.
CLOPIN: No! Then what would you call telling them our hiding place?!
GYPSIES: (yell in agreement)
CLOPIN: I always knew you were trouble.
PHOEBUS: You should be grateful to her! Weve come to warn you! Frollo knows your hiding place. He
plans on attacking at dawn.
CLOPIN: All right, keep calm! How do you know this?
QUASIMODO: Master told me.
CLOPIN: Oh, why should we believe either of you? Youre Frollos slave! And him; hes a soldier and we don't
trust soldiers!
ESMERELDA: Hes not a soldier anymore!
PHOEBUS: Im just as much an outcast as you.
GYPSY: Clopin, if this is true
GYPSY: We dont have much time!
GYPSY: We need to get ready to leave.
CLOPIN: I thought wed have had a few years here at least. Yes, we must move quicklyYes now! Esmerelda!
Go pack now.
PHOEBUS: Pack? Youre going with them?

63

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

CLOPIN: Of course, she is. No matter what, we wont leave one of our own behind.
ESMERELDA: Thank you, Clopin.
PHOEBUS: Esmerelda, no.
ESMERELDA: What would you have me do?
PHOEBUS: Come with me?
ESMERELDA: Where?
PHOEBUS: (trying to stop her) I dont know. We could make a life together.
ESMERELDA: You really are a dreamer, aren't you? (she goes to QUASIMODO)
QUASIMODO: Esmerelda. I hide you. I keep safe.
ESMERELDA: Quasimodo, no.
QUASIMODO: Maybe in crypts. And all
ESMERELDA: Thank you, Quasimodo, but it would be too dangerous. And not just for me. For you, too.
PHOEBUS: Then if you wont come with me, Ill come with you.
QUASIMODO: (how could she?) You?! Go with him?!
ESMERELDA: You cant, Phoebus.
PHOEBUS: Why not? Theres nothing here for me anymore. Maybe there never was.
ESMERELDA: Yes, but to become like one of us
CLOPIN: Youre crazy. You don't know what you'd be facing.
PHOEBUS: I sure have gotten a pretty good idea of the last few weeks.

21. IN A PLACE OF MIRACLES

(Phoebus, Esmerelda, Quasimodo and Gypsies)

THEIR PLANS WELL SHARE
QUASIMODO:
I WAS NEVER MEANT FOR HEAVENS LIGHT
GYPSIES:
WILL WE REACH A FRIENDLIER SHORE

66

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

WILL WE FIND A HAVEN ONCE MORE
WHERE WELL BE
IN A PLACE OF MIRACLES
NOW WE LEAVE OUR HOME
FOR A PLACE OF MIRACLES
CLOPIN:
ROMANIS AGAIN MUST ROAM
COULD THERE BE COUNTRY
KINDER TO OUR RACE?
GYPSIES:
IN A PLACE OF MIRACLES
QUASIMODO:
WHERES MY PLACE OF MIRACLES?
PHOEBUS:
IN A PLACE
ALL:
OF MIRACLES
FROLLO: (entering with his SOLDIERS) Sorry to interrupt.
GYPSIES: (Gasps and screams)
QUASIMODO: Master!
FROLLO: Congratulations, my boy. You led us right to them.
QUASIMODO: I? But
FROLLO: You didn't really think our soldier here had found this place, did you? So I finally get to see the
Court of Miracles. Its not so impressive. Arrest the gypsy and the traitor.
ESMERELDA: (jumps in front) Spare Phoebus! Take me.
PHOEBUS: (pushes her aside) No! Take me instead!
FROLLO: Oh, how noble you two are. Take them both away. Round up the rest of the gypsies and bring
them to the Bastille.
QUASIMODO: No, no.

67

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

CLOPIN: (screams in Romani and disappears in a pu of smoke)
SOLDIER: My God.
FROLLO: Its all right. Well find him.
GYPSY: Youll never find him. Closing will be halfway out of the city in no time.
FROLLO: Proceed(to QUASIMODO) My boy(he grabs his ear) Im very disappointed in you. Take him

(A CELL appears and ESMERELDA is pushed inside. FROLLO enters and stops)
FROLLO: Do you feel as uncomfortable as you look?
ESMERELDA: I wouldn't give you the pleasure.
FROLLO: It brings me no pleasure. I want to set you free.
ESMERELDA: Then why don't you?
FROLLO: Because in order to do that, I need you to make me a promise. You see? I still want to help you. I
still believe your soul can be saved.

68

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

ESMERELDA: (rushes from him) Not the way you save! Id rather die!
FROLLO: What about Phoebus? Your Sun God? Would you rather he die as well?
ESMERELDA: No
FROLLO: His fate lies in your hands.
ESMERELDA: What?I don't understand. Why me of all people?!
FROLLO: I don't know why! I wish I knew! Sometimes were drawn to the very things that would repel us.
ESMERELDA: You truly are a monster.
FROLLO: No. No! Esmerelda, no. If these last few weeks have taught me anything, its that my cursesIm
truly human.

FROLLO: Is there prisoner there?
FREDERIC:Yes, Your Grace.
FROLLO: Bring him in!
FROLLO: Perhaps my dear, this will help you to think over my oer. Exchange your last words with each

FREDERIC: Yes, your grace.
(FROLLO exits the cell, and grabs PHOEBUS. He pulls him inside of the cell to ESMERELDA).
