Indian Standard
SPECIFICATION FOR
COMMON SALT AND CATTLE LICKS FOR
ANIMAL CONSUMPTION
(First Revision)
o.
FORE WORD
0.1 This Indian Standard (First Revision) was adopted by the Indian
Standards Institution on 12 October 1972, after the draft finalized by the
Animal Feeds Sectional Committee had been approved by the Agricultural
and Food Products Division .Council.
0.2 Apart from being used for industrial and edible purposes, common salt
has various other uses like fish and hide curing, licks for cattle, etc. So far
eight Indian Standards covering requirements for salts for various specific
uses have been formulated, and recently it had been decided to amalgamate
standards for common salt having similar uses. With this in view, this
revision incorporating provisions specified in IS: 920-1958 'Specification for
Common Salt for Animal Consumption ' and IS: 1291-1958 ' Specification
for Cattle Licks (Plain and Mineralized)' is being issued. Taking into
consideration the developments in the industry, some of the methods of test
prescribed for the original standard have been modified.
0.3 The provision of salt licks is not to do away completely with the
incorporation of common salt and/or mineral mixture (containing trace
elements) in the concentrate mixture of dairy animals. They are intended
to only supplement the need of common salt and other trace elements.
Therefore, the limits for various trace elements prescribed in this revision
have been stipulated in such a manner as to meet the requirements of these
elements partly.
0.4 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this
standard is complied with, the final value. observed or calculated. expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with
IS : 2-1960.. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off
value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.
-Rules for rounding off numerical values ( "Vi3,d ).

1. SCOPE
1.1 This standard prescribes the requirements and the methods of sampling
and test for common salt for animal consumption and for cattle licks (also
known al salt licks).
2. COMMON SALT
2.1 DeseriptioD - The material shall be in the form of a crystalline
solid; white or pale-pink or light grey in colour, free from visible contamination of clay, grit or extraneous adulterants and impurities. Common
salt for animal consumption shall not contain any harmful constituents
except other salts, such as calcium carbonate, sodium carbonate,
potassium chloride, magnesium sulphate and magnesium chloride, which
are soluble in water.
2.2 Moi.tare - The material shall contain not more than 6'0 percent
by mass of moisture, on as-received basis, when tested according to the
method prescribed in Appendix A of IS : 2531970 .

APPENDIX A
( Clause 5.2 )
SAMPLING OF fATTLE LICKS (PLAIN AND MINERALIZED)
A-I. GENERAL
A-I.O In drawing, preparing, storing and handling test samples, the
following precautions and directions shall be observed.
A-1.1 Samples shall be taken in a protected place not exposed to damp
air, dust or soot.
A-l.2 The sampling instrument shall he clean and dry when used.
A-l.3 Precautions shall be taken to protect the samples, the material being
sampled, the sampling instrument and the containers for samples from
adventitious contamination.
A-l.4 The samples shall be placed in clean, dry, air-tight glass or other
suitable containers on which the material has no action.
1\-1.5 The sample containers when used shall be of such a size that they
are almost completely filled by the sample.
Specification for edible common salt (s,tand "vision ).
IS .120.1972
A-I.6 Each sample container shall be sealed air-tight with a stopper after
filling, and marked with full details of sampling, the date of sampling. and
the month and year of manufacture of the material.
A-I.7 Samples shan be stored in such a manner that the temperature of
the material does not vary unduly from the normal temperature.

A-3. FfEST SAMPLES AND REFEREE SAMPLE
A-3.1 Preparation 01 Teat Sample.
A-:J.I.l Remove the surface skin from the side faces of licks. Drill with
a suitable drilling cutter a number of holes on each block or brick selected for sampling (see Table 3) down to about half of its thickness along a
diagonal line on both sides of the block or the brick, the holes being evenly
arranged over the length. Collect equal amounts of drillings from each
of these holes, thoroughly mix to make a composite sample.
Break to small pieces each of the lOO-g pet licks, selected for sampling
Collect equal amount of these small pieces and mix them
to make a composite sample.
( see Table 3 ) .
A-3.1.2 The total quantity of the composite sample shall not be less
than 300 g. Divide this composite sample into three equal parts, one for
the purchaser, another for the vendor and the third to be used as referee
sample.
A-3.2 Referee Sample - The referee sample shall consist of the composite
sample (see A-3.1.2) marked for this purpose and shall bear the seals of
the purchaser and the vendor. It shall be kept at a place agreed to
between the purchaser and the vendor and shall be used in case of a dispute
between the two.
A-t. TESTS
A-f.l Tests for characteristics prescribed under 3 shall be conducted on
the composite sample.
