Origins
AstheBritishpulledoutofDubaiinthelate1950s,SheikhSaeedbinMaktoumalMaktoumdecreedanopen
seas,openskies,andopentradepolicy,todevelopthecountry.Healsorequiredallgovernmentagenciesto
makeaprofit.Thecountrywasaimingtoeliminateitsdependenceonitsfiniteoilreserveswithin50years.
TheDubaiNationalAirTransportAssociation(DNATA)wasformedin1959,andbythemid1980s,itwas
employing2,500employees.Itconsistedofthreebusinesssegments:DnataAirportOperations,DnataCargo
andDnataAgencies.InadditiontoprovidingsupportservicesatDubaiInternationalAirport,thecompany
servedassalesagentfor26airlines.DubaihadbeenusedasastopoveronroutesbetweenEuropeandtheFar
EastsincethedaysofImperialAirways,whichlandeditsflyingboatsthereenroutetoAustralia.Theopen
skiespolicieskeptitsairportamongthebusiestintheMiddleEast.
Duringthemid1980s,GulfAirbegantocutbackitservicestoDubai.Asaresult,Emirateswasconceivedin
March1985withbackingfromDubai'sroyalfamily,whoseDubaiRoyalAirWingprovidedtwooftheairline's
firstaircraft,usedBoeing727200/Advs.Itwasrequiredtooperateindependentofgovernmentsubsidies,apart
from$10millioninstartupcapital.ItalsoleasedanewBoeing737300fromPakistanInternationalAirlines
whichwasreturnedin1987.[14]MauriceFlanaganwasnamedmanagingdirectorofthenewairline.Formerly
oftheRoyalAirForce,BritishAirways,andGulfAir,FlanaganhadbeensecondedtoDNATAin1978ona
twoyearassignmentasassistantgeneralsalesmanager.ChairmanwasSheikhAhmedbinSaeedAlMaktoum,
nephewoftherulerofDubaibecamechairmanofDepartmentofCivilAviationandDNATAitself.TimClark
joinedthemanagementteam.
Thefirstflightoftheairlinewas,DubaiKarachion25October
1985.[15]TheairlineleasedanAirbus300B4200,fromPakistan
InternationalAirlines.BombayandDelhiwerethenextdestinationsfor
theairline.SheikhMohammedbinRashidalMaktoumlatergiftedtwo
Boeing727200stotheairline.

TheEmiratesGroupbecameprofitablewithinitsfirstninemonths.
Duringitsfirstyear,theairlinecarriedabout260,000passengersand
10,000tonsoffreight.By1986,theairlinewasaddingnewdestinations
suchasColombo,Dhaka,Amman,andCairotoitsroutenetwork.

Initssecondyearthegrouppostedaloss,butgrowthcontinuedevenastheregionwasexperiencinga
downturnayearlater.TheGulfWarandthelayingoffofexpatriateworkersasthemainfactors.Initssecond
year,competitorshadaccusedEmiratesofstartingapricewar,somethingtheairline'scompetitorsstillaccuse
Emiratesofdoing.On3July1987,EmiratesreceiveditsfirstboughtAirbusA310304,fromTolouse.Within
thefirst38monthsofoperating,Emirateswasserving12destinations.[16]

EmiratesSkyCargo,whichoperatedasaseparateentity,carried25,000tonsoffreightinfiscal1989.Emirates
expandeditsroutenetworkintotheFarEastin1990,andexpandeditsEuropeanoperationsinthesummerof
1992.In1990,theairlinepurchasedthreeadditionalAirbusA310300sfromAirbus.TheGroupalsolaunched
MarhabainDecember1991asapremiummeetandgreetserviceforpassengerstravellingthroughDubai

Growth
Emiratesairlinehadbecomeoneoftheworld'sfastestgrowingairlinesbytheearly1990s.Revenuesincreased
byabout$100millioneachyear,approaching$500millionin1993.Itcarried68,000tonsofcargoand
1.6millionpassengersinthesameyear.TheGulfWarhadhelpedEmiratesbykeepingotherairlinesoutofthe
area.Emirateswastheonlyairlinetocontinueflyinginthelasttendaysofthewar.Bythewinterof1991,the
Emiratesfleetwasgroundedforseveraldays,astheliberationofKuwaitbegun.Operationsresumedweeks
later.TheairlinesawthearrivalofanotherAirbusA300600R,takingitsfleettonine,Emiratesorderedseven
Boeing777s,withanoptionforsevenmore,inaUS$645.5milliondealinthesameyear.Astheairline
celebrateditssixthanniversary,25,000passengersaweekwerebeingflownto23destinations.Ayearlater,
EmiratesopenedtheirownUS$2millionterminalatDubaiAirport.
ApartnershipagreementwithUSAirwaysenteredinthefallof1993allowedEmiratestoofferservicesaround
theworld.ItpreviouslyhadcooperationagreementswithCyprusAirways.By1994,theairlinewasconnecting
32destinationswithits15aircraft.AtthistimeEmirateswasthesixthlargestairlineintheMiddleEast.
Emiratestookinrevenuesof$643.4millionintheyearending30
March1994.Theairlinehad4,000employeesandcarriedtwomillion
passengersayearbetween34destinationswithafleetof18Airbus
aircraft.Inspiteofthelargecapitalexpenditures,theDubaigovernment

Atotalof92aircarrierswereflyingtoDubaiAirportandEmirates

Emiratescontinuedtoexpandduringthelate1990s.Thegrowingcargo
businessaccountedfor16percentoftheairline'stotalrevenues.By1995,ithasafleetflyingto34locationsin
theMiddleEast,FarEastandEurope.EmiratesalsoopeneditsownFlightTrainingCentrein1995.
In1997,EmirateswasflyingadedicatedfreightertoAmsterdam,apointnotonitsnetworkofpassenger
routes,incooperationwithKLM.Itcarriedaboutthreemillionpassengersduringtheyear.Thesameyear,
Emiratesmadea$2billionorderfor16AirbusA330200s,andcarriedoverthreemillionpassengersand
150,000tonnesofcargo.TheairlinealsotookdeliveryofsixBoeing777200s,givingitnewlonghaul
capabilities.
Emiratesopeneda,$65milliontrainingcenterinJanuary1997.Theairlinewasthenabletoprovidesimulator
trainingforitscrewmembersandflightandmaintenancepersonnel.ArecordgroupprofitofAED371million
wasachievedin199798.Emiratesexecutivesplannedaslowdownintheairline'sgrowthinthelate1990sto
stabilizeitsexpansiveroutenetwork.
InMay1998,EmiratespaidtheGovernmentofSriLanka$70millionfora40percentstakeinSriLankan
Airlines(formerlyknownasAirLanka).Aspartofthedeal,Emiratesreceiveda10yearcontracttomanage
SriLankan.[18]InJanuary2008,EmiratesannouncedthatitwouldgivebackmanagementofSriLankanAirlines

In1998,theairlineopeneda$540millionTerminal2atDubaiInternationalAirport,andincreaseditscapacity
by26percentaspassengerfigureshit3.7million,whilecargolevelswentupto200,000tonnes.Galileo
Emirates(nowknownasEmquest),wasestablishedtoconsolidatethedistributionoftravelsolutions,primarily
theGalileoReservationSystem,intheexistingmarketsoftheUAE,Oman,Bahrain,Qatar,PakistanandSri
Lanka.
In1999,EmiratesopeneditsownhotelTheAlDossaDesertResort.EmiratesGroupsworkforcetotaled
11,000thatyear,andDnataenteredtheSouthEastAsianairportservicesmarketwiththelaunchofDnata
PhilippinesInc.EmiratesSkyCargoalsolaunchedanewsystemcalledSkychaindevelopedbyMercator,which
providedaccessviatheInternetandemailtoeveryoneinvolvedinmovingacargoconsignment.[22]

Modernhistory
EmiratesannouncedanorderinApril2000asthefirstlaunchcustomerfortheAirbusA3XX(laternamed
AirbusA380),thelargestcivilaircrafteverbuilt.ThedealcomprisedfiveAirbusA380800sandtwoAirbus
A380800F.Thedealwasconfirmedon4November2001andEmiratesannouncedordersfor15moreA380
800satthesametime.Alsoannouncedwasanorderfor6Boeing777's.Emiratesjustifieditsordersayingthat
purchasingthe481to656passengersuperjumbotowastomaximizeitsuseofscarcetakeoffandlanding
slotsatcrowdedairportslikeLondonHeathrow.InthesameyearthenewSheikhRashidTerminalopened,
increasingthecapacityatDubaiInternationalto22millionpassengersayear.TheloyaltyprogramofEmirates,
Skywardswasalsolaunched.SheikhAhmedalsoannouncedthatDubaiGovernmentistoinvest$500600min
thenewTerminal3withacapacityfor20millionpassengersayear.
Towardstheendof2000,EmiratesAirlinewasplanningtostartultra
longhaulservicetotheEastCoastandWestCoastoftheUnitedStates
aswellasnonstopflightstoAustraliaandArgentina.Trafficcontinued
togrowatarateof20percentin19992000.
In2001,EmiratesSkyCargoCentreopenedwithacapacitytohandle
400,000tonnesayear.Emirateswasalsovotedairlineoftheyearby

in2006,Emiratesflightcateringopeneditslinecraftlaunderingplant.Thefacilityhasatotalareaof10,500m2,
andacapacitytohandle50tonnesoflaundryanddrycleaningoutputperday.[27]AttheFarnboroughAirShow

$34.9billion,attheDubaiAirShow.TheNewEngineeringCentreandEngineTestCellareofficiallyopened
andtheEmiratesHarbourHotel&ResidenceandtheMarinaHotelopentheirdoors.InSeptember,thegroup
alsobuysa49%stakeinUKbasedAlphaGroup.[28]Alsoin2007,Dnatasigneda15yearjointventure
agreementwithChinaWestAirportGrouptoprovideairportgroundhandlingservicesinXi'anXianyang
InternationalAirport.Dnatawillalsoparticipateinoperationsat10otherairportsmanagedbyCWAG.Under
theagreementsigned,Dnatawillholda45percentstakeinXi'anDnataAviationServicesCompanyLimited,
withtheremaining55percentownedbyCWAG.Also,attheendof2007,DnataopenedofficesinQatar.[29]
In2008,theEmiratesGroupmovedintoitsnewheadquartersinDubai.EmiratesSkyCargoalsobegan
operationsoutofDubaiCargoVillagesnewMegaTerminal,withacapacitytohandle1.2milliontonnes
annually.InJune,Dnataacquireda19.99percentstakeinitspartnerHoggRobinsonGroup,becomingthe
largestshareholderinthecompany.[30]InAugustEmiratestookdeliveryofthreeA380sandthefirstEmirates
A380toucheddowninNewYorkinAugust.Emiratesalsoreceivedits10,000thcabincrewmember.In
September,SabreHoldingssigneda10yearagreementwithEmQuesttpdistributeservicesinAfrica.In
OctobertheEmiratesdedicatedTerminal3openedwithacapacityofover27millionpassengers,theterminal

In2013,EmQuestsignedanagreementwithContacServicesInc.tolaunchthemywurldplatforminthe

below20%ayear.Initsfirst11years,itdoubledinsizeevery3.5years,andhaseveryfouryearssince.[35]
In2008EmiratespaiddividendsworthUS$776milliontotheGovernmentofDubai.Thegovernmenthas
receivedDhs3.1billionfromEmiratessincedividendsstartedbeingpaidin1999forhavingprovidedaninitial
startupcapitalofUS$10mandanadditionalinvestmentofcircaUS$80matthetimeoftheairline's
