Whilehumanvisualperceptionisrelativelyconstantfromonepersontoanother,theideaofgoodproportionsand
beautynecessarilyvaries,basedonexperienceandknowledge.Therearesomeconstantshowever,suchasasenseof
visualbalancederivedfrombodyrelatedproportions(seeexplanationintextfromlastweeksreading),buteventhese
varyaccordingtoculturalandotherexperientialcircumstances.Expressioninarchitecturevaries:Compare,for
instance,highVictorianwithGothic,orGothicwithRenaissanceclassicism,orChineseBuddhistarchitecturewith
theWestshighGothic.
Soisthistosaythatallsuchthingsarerelativeandthereforerulestoensurebeautyandproportionsareessentially
arbitraryandthereforefutile?Anotherwaytoapproachtheproblemisthroughtheinternallogicofagivenorder.
