Were always on the move! Even when youre standing still, youre moving!

You
are moving because the Earth and everything in our solar system is constantly
moving.
Our solar system includes the Sun, nine planets and
their Moons, comets and asteroids. These objects are sometimes
called celestialbodies, and they are constantly moving, too.
At the center of it all is the Sun. It takes the Sun 25 days to spin, or rotate,
completely around.
The Earth, which is the third planet from the Sun, takes 24
hours to rotate. This is what causes day and night. As the
Earth rotates, it also moves, or revolves, around the Sun.
The Earths path around the Sun is called its orbit. It takes
the Earth one year, or 365 1/4 days, to completely orbit the
Sun.
As the Earth orbits the Sun, the Moon orbits the Earth. The Moons orbit lasts 27
1/2 days, but because the Earth keeps moving, it takes the Moon two extra days, 29
1/2, to come back to the same place in our sky.
Eclipse

Sometimes during their orbits, the moon and the Earth form a line with the Sun. When
this happens, an eclipse occurs.
There are two kinds of eclipse - lunar and solar.
A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth moves between the Sun and the moon,
blocking part of the Sun's light from reaching the moon. During a lunar eclipse, you
will see the Earth's shadow on the moon.
In a solar eclipse, the moon moves between the Earth and the Sun. When this
happens, part of the Sun's light is blocked. The sky slowly gets dark as the moon
moves in front of the Sun. When the moon and Sun are in a perfect line, it is called a
total eclipse. These are very rare. Most people only see one in their lifetime.
To see how this can happen,
try this activity

An eclipse of the Sun occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the
Sun. The Moon blocks the light of the Sun and a shadow of the Moon is cast on the
Earth's surface.
During a solar eclipse, the Moon actually casts two shadows towards Earth. One
shadow is called the umbra which becomes smaller as it reaches the Earth. The
second shadow is called the penumbra which becomes larger as it reaches the
Earth. A total solar eclipse, or a complete blocking out of the Sun's light, can only
be seen from the area on the Earth's surface that enters the Moon's umbra, the
smaller shadow. People viewing the eclipse from the area of the Earth's surface that
enters the penumbra, the larger shadow, will see only a partial blocking of the Sun.
