Examples: Evaporation
Foust Example 19.1 Single-Effect Evaporator
Determine the heating area required for the production of 10,000 lb/hr of 50% NaOH solution
from a 10% NaOH feed entering at 100F. Evaporation is to be carried out in a single-effect
standard evaporator for which an overall coefficient of 500 Btu/hr-ft 2-F is expected. Steam is
available saturated at 50 psig, and the evaporator can be operated at 10 psi vacuum relative to
a barometric pressure of 14.7 psia.
Foust Example 19.3 Triple-Effect Evaporator
A triple-effect evaporator is to be used to concentrate 5% NaOH to 50% NaOH. Forward feed is to
be used with feed entering at 60F. Overall coefficients of 800, 500, and 300 Btu/hr-ft 2-F are
expected for the three effects in the given order. Steam is available at 125 psia, and ejectors
capable of maintaining a pressure of 1 psia will be used. The heating areas of each effect are to
be equal and large enough to produce 10 tons/hr of concentrate (1 ton = 2000 lb). What heating
area is needed for each effect? What will be the steam consumption and the economy?
