What is virtualization?

Virtualization is the process of creating a software-based (or

virtual) representation of something rather than a physical one.

Virtualization can apply to applications, servers, storage, and

networks and is the single most effective way to reduce IT
expenses while boosting efficiency and agility for all size
businesses.

Partitioning one physical server into several virtual servers, or

machines. Each virtual machine can interact independently with
other devices, applications, data and users as though it were a
separate physical resource.

Virtualization

Different virtual machines can run different operating systems and

multiple applications while sharing the resources of a single
physical computer.

Virtual machine is isolated from other virtualized machines, if one

crashes, it doesnt affect the others.

Virtualization was first introduced in the 1960s by IBM to boost

utilization of large, expensive mainframe systems by partitioning
them into logical, separate virtual machines that could run multiple
applications and processes at the same time.

Without and With Virtualization

Without and With Virtualization

Without VMs: A single OS owns all hardware resources

With VMs: Multiple OSes, each running its own virtual machine,
share hardware resources

Virtualization enables multiple operating systems to run on the

same physical platform

What is HyperVisor ?

Hypervisor is a software (secret source) that makes virtualization

possible.

This software, also known as a virtualization manager, sits between

the hardware and the operating system, and decouples the
operating system and applications from the hardware.

The hypervisor assigns the amount of access that the operating

systems and applications have with the processor and other
hardware resources, such as memory and disk input/output.

Types of Hypervisor

Type 1 Hypervisor (Hyper-V , Xen , VMWare ESX )

This is also known as Bare Metal or Embedded or Native Hypervisor.

It works directly on the hardware of the host and can monitor operating
systems that run above the hypervisor.

It is completely independent from the Operating System.

The hypervisor is small as its main task is sharing and managing

hardware resources between different operating systems.

A major advantage is that any problems in one virtual machine or guest

operating system do not affect the other guest operating systems
running on the hypervisor.

Types of Hypervisor

Type 2 Hypervisor(Virtual PC and Server , VMWare Workstation)

This is also known as Hosted Hypervisor.

In this case, the hypervisor is installed on an operating system and

then supports other operating systems above it.

It is completely dependent on host Operating System for its

operations

While having a base operating system allows better specification of

policies, any problems in the base operating system a ffects the
entire system as well even if the hypervisor running above the base
OS is secure.

Difference Between Type1 and Type 2

Benefits of Virtualization

Virtualization can increase IT agility, flexibility, and scalability while

creating significant cost savings.

Reduce capital and operating costs.

Minimize or eliminate downtime.

Increase IT productivity, efficiency, agility and responsiveness.

Provision applications and resources faster.

Enable business continuity and disaster recovery.

Simplify data center management.

Build a true Software-Defined Data Center

History of Vmware - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VMware

Three different types of desktop software:

VMware Workstation: This application is used to install and run multiple

copies or instances of the same operating systems or different operating
systems on a single physical computer machine.

VMware Fusion: This product was designed for Mac users and provides
extra compatibility with all other VMware products and applications.

VMware Player: This product was launched as freeware by VMware for

users who do not have licensed VMWare products. This product is intended
only for personel use.
