Problem 1

As shown in the Figure below, 5 kg of steam contained within a piston-cylinder

assembly undergoes an expansion from state 1, where the specific internal energy is U1
= 2709.9 kJ/kg, to state 2, where U2 = 2659.6 kJ/kg. During the process, there is heat
transfer to the steam with a magnitude of 80 kJ. Also, a paddle wheel transfers energy
to the steam by work in the amount of 18.5 kJ. There is no significant change in the
kinetic or potential energy of the steam. Determine the energy transfer by work from the
steam to the piston during the process, in kJ.

Problem 2
A rigid vessel having a volume of 5 m3 contains 0.05 m3 of saturated liquid water and
4.95 m3 of saturated water vapor at a pressure of 0.1 MPa. Heat is transferred until the
vessel is filled only with saturated vapor. Determine:
a) The heat transfer for this process
b) Show the process on a P-v and T-v diagrams
State all your assumptions.

Problem 3
An equivalent system for problem 1 is used for this problem 3: a horizontal
piston/cylinder setup, which right now contains 0.1 kg of water at 1000 KPa and 500
o
C. The water now is cooled down with a constant force on the piston until it reaches
half of the initial volume. At this point, the piston will stop so the system will keep cooling
down until reaches ambient temperature of 25 oC. Determine:
a) The final pressure, temperature and quality (if any)
b) The total work exerted by the piston
c) The total heat transfer out from the piston/cylinder setup
d) Show the process on a P-v and T-v diagrams
State all your assumptions.
