TESOL Certificate: Advanced Practitioner

Procedures for Observed Practice Teaching

All program participants are required to complete a 50-minute practice
teaching in the context in which they are currently teaching. This
observation report form will help TESOL assess the participants ability to
teach a lesson based on a lesson plan while remaining sensitive to
learners needs and pace. Although not required, applicants and observers
are encouraged to have a feedback session together shortly after the
observation. We request that observers complete this form during or
shortly after the observation and return it to TESOL at
practitioner@tesol.org. This form will be treated as confidential by the
TESOL staff and will not be shared with the participant.
STEP ONE: PRE-OBSERVATION
To be done by the participant:
Use this form to report what you hope to learn from this classroom
observation. You may write your answers directly on this form after each
question.

Classroom Observation Setting

Name, address, phone number, and website address (if

will be observed.
ICPNA Regin Centro, Avenida Girldez 494, 51-064-232141,

Give a brief description of the school, institution, or

organization (e.g., public or private, size, etc.) where you plan
to be observed.
ICPNA Regin Centro (ICPNA RC) is a binational center (nonprofit)
located in Huancayo Peru with decentralized branches in 3 more cities:
1

La Merced, Hunuco, and Ayacucho. ICPNA RC offers two programs:

Young Student Program and Adult Program. At present ICPNA RC has
more than 4000 students with monthly enrolments.

The date, time, and classroom for the observation.

Class observation will take place October 16, 5:40 6:30 pm.

Why did you want to be observed in this particular classroom

setting?
As Im the Academic Manager of this binational center, I dont teach
very often. This October, I gave myself a class to teach. This class is an
I03 and is part of the Intermediate Phase there are three phases at
ICPNA going from basic to advanced. I have taught this class previously
(different students) and this is one reason for me to want to be
observed in this course. Also, I believe I cannot disconnect from the
teaching experience and need to be in practice often.

Your Pre-Observation Expectations

Please describe at least three new things that you want to

learn during your practice teaching. What aspects of the
lesson and your teaching would you like the evaluator to
consider? Please be specific (e.g., am I successful completing
my classroom objectives? Did I manage the classroom time
effectively? Should the pair work be minimized?)
I especially want the observer to focus on how I have added a reading
comprehension component to a speaking task. I would like the
observer to see how the speaking task unfolds and to the extent to
which the outcome of the task is achieved.

How do you expect this experience will influence your

teaching?
Learning is ongoing and I expect to learn from the point of view of an
experienced teacher.
Im trying out new ideas in my teaching although I dont teach very
often. I would like to know how my teaching is evolving. I have a need
to be more reflective and avoid falling into a teaching routine.

Why did you ask this particular evaluator to observe your

class? Do you have any specific questions for him/her?
The observer has broad experience observing classes and supporting
new and seasoned teachers at this binational center.

I would like the observer to help me see if he believes that adding a

reading comprehension component positively adds to the speaking
skills of the learners.

Share your pre-observation expectations with your observer before the

observation takes place.
Make sure to provide your observer with a copy of your lesson plan so
he/she has something to follow while observing.

Any additional comments:

This was an effective lesson in which a reading activity was implemented
for two purposes. On the one hand, a reading comprehension component
helps the students relate information from a singer to their own favorite
singers. Then the reading turns into speaking task that helps students
develop communicative skills while practicing the target grammar and
vocabulary from the unit.
It is recommended that you schedule a time to meet with the
participant to go over your observation. If possible, add a few
comments on how that post-observation meeting went.
