Great Britain Before the War

Britain was the most technologically advanced nation in the world prior to
world war 1
The industrial revolution was very recent at this time, and Great Britain was
still prospering
They were at an economical high point, with the high and middle class rich,
and the lower classes poor
With industrialization the people working in factories and mines are busting
their backs to make a nickel while the high class enjoy the benefits.
Britain had always had the strongest navy and still did at this point, new ships
were being built launched constantly, and with the invention of the steam
engine they became faster and more powerful
The power of their navy allowed them to expand their empire all over the
world years before this point, they had tonnes of resources coming in from
colonies
The British colonies in India, Canada, South Africa (there were plans drawn of
a railway stretching the length of Africa) and Australia were all sending raw
materials to England, and would later send troops
This was a prosperous age, but it had its problems, Englands poor were living
in such bad conditions that disease, poverty, crime, child labour, and
prostitution thrived
When the war started this would be one reason people would enlist

The Representation of the People Act (June 1918) gave the

vote for the first time to all men over the age of 21 and to
woman over the age of 30.

Previously under-represented groups such as women and, in particular,

the working class became better organised and more powerful during
the war.
Before world war one. Britain was the worlds economic
superpower. However it wasnt ready for the economic
impact war would have.

Facing the financial strain of war Britain had to find a way

how to get money so they increased taxes, bored money,
and printed money.
In July 1914 3.2 million women where employed in industry
this has jumped to 4.8 after the war. Some 40% of these
women were married compared with only 14% prior to the
war.
Unemployment raise by 1.5 million

Britain was significantly weakened and the USA became the

most powerful country in industrial, economy and trade
Countries cut off from supply of British goods so Britain lost
some buyers.
