Notes and Bibliography in Study Outline and Study Report

Students are responsible for properly citing their sources in the Study
Outline (Task 1) and Study Report (Task 2). There are many ways one can
reference work that is not done by them in academic writings. History
Departments in different universities of Hong Kong require students to use
the Chicago Manual of Style in assignments. Therefore, it is the citation style
required in History SBA. You may visit the website of the Chicago Manual of
Style for more information: http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org
General Rules of Thumb
- If you take somebody elses work and put it in your writing word by word
for more than 3 words, you should quote, cite and attribute the source .
- If you take somebody elses idea in your writing and paraphrase (reword) it,
you should cite and attribute the source .
In-text Reference
After making a quote or reference to something written by another author,
pair of brackets is used to enclose the authors last name followed by a
comma, then the year of publication. For example,
Direct Quotation
Maos marriage with Jiang Qing was probably one of the causes for his
awkward political decisions late in life. As Hsu stated, [a]lthough deified
by 900 million people, Mao in private life was an aged and doddering
husband (Hsu, 1970).
Tchiang Ka-cheks book, Chinas Destiny (Zhongguo zhi mingyun) ,
published in 1943, reflected his authoritarian orientation (Chesneaux, Le
Barbier and Bergre, 1977).
Paraphrasing of idea
Mao may have been a deified figure among the Chinese; he was a docile and
aged old man to his wife, Jiang Qing (Hsu, 1970).
Chiang Kai-sheks writings, like Chinas Destiny , were reflections of his
authoritarian leanings (Chesneaux, Le Barbier and Bergre, 1977).
Note 1: The full-stops should always go behind the reference, no exceptions!
Note 2: There is another more detailed system of annotations with footnotes,
you may choose to make citations with it instead of the system seen here.
Practice:
Select 2 direct quotes and paraphrase 2 ideas from 2 books and cite them

End-of-work bibliography
At the end of the report, a bibliography or reference list should be provided.
It should include all the references that have been used in the course of
writing the report. The information is usually found in the first few pages of
a book. The items should be arranged alphabetically. For example,
