GEODIMETER GEODAT WIN

Welcome to Geodimeter Geodat Win

Welcome to Geodimeter Geodat Win

Thanks for choosing Geodimeter Geodat Win, Field Control
Unit.
The general idea behind Geodimeter Geodat Win (hereafter
refered to as Geodat Win) is to have a universal control unit
for both total station and GPS/GLONASS instruments. This
will allow you to use the same control unit, along with the
same basic syntax and commands, with any of Spectra Precisions surveying systems.
Geodat Win has been developed into a very powerful, state of
the art control unit. This is the result of Spectra Precisions
many years of experience in creating superior surveying equipment.
Geodat Win uses Windows 95 and basically has the same
functions as an ordinary PC. The application and field calculation software that runs on Geodat Win is called GeoWin
a very flexible and powerful software developed by Spectra
Precision.

1. Introduction

The Geodat Win control unit

The Geodat Win control unit is a very powerful surveying
computer. It functions as a control unit for both Geodimeter
total stations and Geotracer GPS/GLONASS receivers. It can
hold a wide range of application software and is designed for
easy handling, rough treatment and high productivity in the
field and office.

Detachable control unit

The Geodat Win control unit can work either as a stand-alone
unit or it can be used in conjunction with Geodimeter total stations or Geotracer GPS systems. You can easily snap the control unit onto the total station as described in Figure 1.3
below.
Never detach the Geodat Win control unit when the total station is switched on. Data might be lost.

To attach Geodat Win,

press the underside of
the control unit against
the metal grip on the
bottom of the alidade.
Then press the top of
the control unit until it
snaps onto the two upper metal grips.
To detach Geodat

GEODIMETER GEODAT WIN

1. Introduction

The display
The display of Geodat Win is a monochrome 1/4 VGA
(320x240 pixels) touch screen. It is made of polyester to guarantee excellent resistance to both mecanical and chemical
stress. It is possible to press the screen with your fingers, but
in most situations it can be hard to select the desired function
due to the size of the soft key area. Therefore, we have supplied a pointer pen for better functionality (see Figure 1.1).
Never use sharp objects to operate the touch screen. It may
damage the the screen.

The keyboard
The keyboard is designed with key functionality similar to a
standard PC keyboard. The keys are of touch type and international symbols are used to indicate key function(s).

Key functions
The function(s) of each key is described below. Since different
control and application software can be used with Geodat
Win, the key description should be considered as very general.

Function LED
The function LED is situated on the upper
right of the front panel and indicates the current power state of the Geodat Win control
unit. A steady green light indicates power on
and normal operation. Flashing green light inl
dicates suspend mode, i.e the mode that occurs when Geodat Win has been left powered on but not used
for 30 minutes, or after a short press of the PWR button.
Note that the display illumination automatically shuts off
after 30 seconds if the screen or keys havent been touched.
You switch it on again by pressing anywhere on the touch
screen. The illumination shutdown has nothing to do with
the power state.
Battery low or power loss
If main supply voltage should fall below the preset battery
low threshold voltage, or if the power cable is pulled out
during operation, the LED will start flashing red. The
built-in support battery will give you approximately 1
hour (if the support battery is fully charged) to restore the
main power supply. See more about the support battery in
Support battery on page 29.
29.
Suspend mode
If PWR is pressed during normal operation Geodat Win will
enter suspend mode. This is indicated by the function LED
flashing green. Suspend mode is maintained for one hour if no
external battery is connected and for two hours if a fresh external battery is connected. After this time Geodat Win will
shut down and data that hasnt been properly saved might be
lost.

Powering the Geodat Win unit

Geodat Win can be powered in several different ways, depending on the application. If using a Geotracer system, the most
common way is to connect a Spectra Precision External Battery connected to one of the two Hirose connectors on the left
side of the Geodat Win unit (see Figure 2.1). If you are using a
Geodimeter System 600, you can attach the Geodat Win unit
to the instruments alidade. By doing this, Geodat Win is powered via the alidade and doesnt need an extra cable (see Figure
2.1). The entire system is powered via the Hirose connector on
the instrument.
Never detach the Geodat Win control unit when the total station is switched on. Data might be lost.

Data storage
Data storage medium
Geodat Win uses removable PCMCIA cards for data storage.
These PCMCIA cards are available with memory capacities
from a few megabytes up to a couple of hundred megabytes.
You can choose whatever capacity you like Geodat Win can
handle all currently available sizes. The data card is inserted in
card slot B according to Figure 3.1 below. Card slot A is always used for the program PCMCIA card.
Never remove the program PCMCIA card during operation.
This can result in system errors and loss of data.

Data recording
The recording of data in Geodimeter and Geotracer surveying
systems is based on a general system of labels and label numbers which describe the different data items. The label system
24

GEODIMETER GEODAT WIN

has approximately 100 different user labels which can all be

registered as separate items from the Geodat Win keyboard, or
recorded using User Definable Sequences available in the additional software UDS. To be able to carry out surveying tasks
on Geodat Win you must use the Windows 95 program GeoWin available from Spectra Precision.

Data transmission
Serial communication
Since Geodat Win uses removable PCMCIA cards for data
storage, it is easy to transfer data between units by just exchanging these cards. Serial communication may be developed
further in the future, but right now only a few applications
work with serial communication (see GeoWin User Manual
for further information).

An 8.4 V, 100-120 mAh NiCd battery is used as support battery. The purpose of the support battery is to maintain the supply voltage until a controlled shutdown has been carried out in
case of sudden main supply voltage disappearance.
A fully charged support battery will supply power to Geodat
Win for approximately 1-2 hours. During this time you have
to change main power source (to a fully charged heavy duty
battery, for example). Charging time for a flat support battery
is around 1.5 hours under ideal conditions (12 V input voltage, room temperature and a support battery in good condition). The support battery is charged automatically from the
main power source.
It is not possible to carry out surveying or processing tasks on
Geodat Win from the support battery alone you always have
to use an external main power source such as a heavy duty battery or a power supply. For information about replacement of
the support battery see Support battery replacement on
page 41.

About charging NiMH (and NiCd) batteries

Charging time for a discharged NiMH (or NiCd) battery is approximately 14-16 hours (considerably shorter using Super
Charger). The temperature while charging should be above
+5C but should not exceed room temperature (0 to +40C for
Super Charger). The condition of the battery will be better preserved if it is used until the Geodat Win unit indicates "Bat
Low" and the automatic cut-out function is activated. Discharge of stored batteries can vary considerably, depending on
the quality of the individual cells, especially at higher temperatures. It is therefore recommended to recharge batteries if
they have been stored for a longer period than two weeks.

Battery status
When using Geodat Win with the program GeoWin it is
possible to view current battery status on the screen. However
there are some remarks to be made:
The discharge curve for NiMH and NiCd batteries may
vary a lot with the condition of the battery. Because of this
the time between a fully charged battery and battery low
will vary between a brand new battery and an old one. It
will also vary depending on what charging method has
been used and which type of battery is being used.
A battery which is taken directly from the charger may
show a full battery indication even if the battery is not
fully charged.
From this we recommend you to note the following:
The battery status should be considered only as a coarse indication of the connected battery's remaining capacity.
